It's very interesting to speculate on what BB's plan originally was. We know it wasn't the same because he clearly wanted to go after Luffy without knowing about the Ace connection. So I think his plan to get prisonners to join his crew and his plan to get WB's devil fruit were two separate plans that he was lucky enough to be able to execute at the same time when he captured Ace instead of Luffy. As to what was his plan to get to WB, that's a complete unknown. Maybe he had other fruits in mind if he couldn't reach whitebeard.

Man I would have loved to see Kaido pull up to this war. The marines and black beard would probably have to team up against him.
