If you want to know about Megumin meeting the cat, I recommend reading her prequel manga. It pretty much covers events of Megumin from before she joined the party. It's good and the art is great, so that's a nice bonus.

Sort-Of Spoiler About the Megumin's Cat: (It's not in the anime or movie, just the light novel and a spin-off manga.) There are four goddesses of the world, two good, two evil (like the witches in the Wizard of Oz). Aqua is the element of Water and the trait of Freedom. Eris is the element of Light and the trait of Humility. One of the evil ones is Regina, the element of Darkness and trait of Puppetry/Revenge. The last is Wolbach, with the element of Fire and trait of Destruction. Similar to Aqua, Wolbach descended into the world as an active participant, but managed to retain all her power by splitting herself in two. One, a super-endowed woman with a knack for all the explosive types of magic (namely Detonate and Explosion), the other was a massive feral beast similar to a saber-toothed tiger and a black panther named a Rookie Killer. The later of which was defeated and reverted into a smaller, more docile form.

Ok Spoiler time YunYun grew up without any Friends so she would duel Megumin all the time she could hang out. Megumin grew up really poor it was really bad. She and her little sister Komekko would actually eat bugs you actually saw her in this episode Megumin clothes are her only set of clothes. Now for Chemosuke the cat lets just say she is linked to Megumin's explosion magic Now light novel wise this takes place in volume 3 and 4.
