Thank you for having the courage to show your learning process as you try to figure out this radio. The rabbit hole side quests are helpful too. I hope you will persevere and put out as many parts as it takes to complete the restoration. Even though you have taken some missteps along the way, I am learning from those, perhaps even more than if you went immediately to a solution. 73 de Mark N4ISS

Apologies - I have not watched the whole video, however I have a working FT101e and think yours is close to working. Have you checked the antenna fuse (light bulb in line with rx input!) - later models dont have this but many do, that may be why you can hear the calibrator but nothing else. The relays may need cleaning. Regarding the calibrator, this should be used to set the slip ring dial once you tune to 'zero beat' for the selected mode. 'Tune' is specifically for setting up the transmitter so use USB/LSB/CW for calibration. I would recommend joining the FoxTango group. There are folks with expert knowledge of this iconic radio who will be able to assist diagnosing other issues. Good luck with the repair, hope you get the radio sorted!.

Thanks mate. Bulb and relay are good. I found one video on hearing what sounds like the calibrator right through the tuning range and I think he called it something like chirps or birds. I think it pointed to a specific module. Hopefully do another video follow up when I get time, also longer antenna to rule that out.

I have 3 of these radios, one is in a similar state. You are missing a few things when it comes to operating and tuning it. If you haven’t already search for a tune up procedure for ft-101. if using the 40 mtr band on the band switch, set the frequency dial between 100 and 200mhz try 150mhz on the to numbers (the red numbers are used with red numbers on the band switch). You should be able to then Soft tune The large air capacitor by the paid of tubes by spinning the dial on the front till the receive hiss comes up loudest. with a long enough wire on the rx (recieve) you should find people talking between 100mhz and 200mhz. and if not go back to the flow chart! There is a great fb community, “Keeping the ft-101 alive” with 3000 members and a few real experts on these old rigs. it is fun to experiment and get the old grey matter working but you don’t have to re-invent the wheel! I hope there is a part 3 if you would like me to make a video showing what I just described about tune up let me know ;)

Very knowledgeable guy. I'd also imagine too busy to get into specific issues of other peoples gear as there's a lot to understand about each unique problem in order to find a solution. No doubt he could return it to as new condition!

You need the maintenance manual as well as the operators manual. Otherwise your troubleshooting guide is worthless.
