Thank you for posting this! It was 8 years old but wow it was much more helpfull than reading the manual. Just got my license a couple of months ago and my dad gave this radio that was used to monitor trucking ages ago. The radio was not used for at least 10(?) years so I cleaned it and work just fine. Also at first I did not expected it to outputting 75 on high, more like 30 or 40 max 😅. Really impressed so far with this radio. Future goal was for ISS repeater use though it still need separate UHF downlink.

Thanks much! I'm a recently retired radio engineer, Commercial GROL, and finally have time to enter the great world of Amateur Radio which I've found vast, interest-limitless and will keep me quite busy until the tombstone. This FT-2900R is so packed with options and features - it's amazing. I agree with the instructor's observation regarding the max-level 75w RF output - impressive for a high band / 2-meter mobile without an external RF amp. It was one of the first things I checked into a 50-ohm dummy load - yep, 75w. I am far from fluency on this FT-2900. Thank you Mr. Instructor DPF. The tutorial was excellent!

It is a solid radio! I had debated with getting one of the new FTM-3200 radios, but The FT-2900 seems to be much more rugged, and not having a fan is one less thing to worry about breaking in a SHTF scenario. Since I live in earthquake country this a concern for me. Plus the FTM-3200 only puts out 65 watts, not that there is a huge difference in distance between the two.

Great video, easy to understand. Wondering how you can set this to skip a channel when in the scanning mode?
@WJ6FRadio7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to watch. here are the directions from the manual for "Memory Skip Scanning." Hopefully, this helps. To mask a memory to be skipped (only) during scanning, use the following procedure: 1. Set the radio to the Memory Recall mode by pressing the [D/MR (MW)] key repeatedly, as necessary, until “MR” and a channel number appear on the right side of the display. 2. Rotate the DIAL knob to select the Memory Channel to be skipped during scanning. 3. Press and hold in the [MHz (SET)] key for one second, then rotate the DIAL knob to select “47 SKIP.” 4. Press the [MHz (SET)] key, then rotate the DIAL knob so as to select “SKIP.” The current Memory Channel will now be ignored during scanning. The “ONLY” selection is used for “Preferential Memory Scan,” described in the next section. 5. Press and hold [MHz (SET)] key for one second to save the new setting and exit to normal operation. A “SKIP” icon will appear when you recall the “skipped” memory channel manually. To re-institute a channel into the scanning loop, select “OFF” in step 4 above, after first recalling the currently-blocked channel (the “Skipped” channel is accessible via manual channel selection methods using the DIAL knob in the Memory mode, whether or not it is locked out of the scanning loop).

@WJ6FRadio6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. I to switched to the FT-2980. The repeater is an electronic device that receives a weak or low-level radio signal and retransmits it at a higher level or higher power, so that the signal can cover longer distances without degradation.
@jasonwyman8086 жыл бұрын
So you get more range out of it?
@WJ6FRadio6 жыл бұрын
Yes, repeaters extend your range. Depending where the repeater is it can really allow you to reach many miles! @invisalinkaccounts27403 жыл бұрын
I love the way you explained and stepped though the process. So much more clear than the Manual. Once thing I had a question on, I noticed on programing in the repeater, you only put in one Freq. I'm guessing the FT-2900 automatically does the math to know the other freq? And It bases it on the default .600 MHz offset? I just got my 2900 and hope to try this on Lunch. Thank you

Excellent video. I'm new to HAM ..I programmed my Yaesu FT2900R for local repeater Using Menu # 49 and 52. then tried CQ on 2 meter past several days, different times of the days and still nothing. How do I know my text is going out? I don't have another radio to test my Yaesu, so I tested (signal report ) on a local repeater..and got a CW response. Not a voice.

@WJ6FRadio3 жыл бұрын
I looked through the manual several times, and I found out you can mask and unmask a memory channel and delete a memory bank.
