Yaesu Remote - build your own for the - FT-891

Yaesu remote configuration
In this video we look at building your own remote.
Yaesu does make a remote but I needed to modify mine for a specific use and add some audio connections plus the PTT.
This video might inspire you to make your own version of the remote.
The remote allows access to the preset voice channels directly from your own buttons.
To make the remote you simply need a mono 3.5 mm plug some buttons and some resistors.
To make the microphone connection you need to tap into the RJ 45 cable and the pins are as following.
pin 5 blue/white ~ mic +
Pin 4 Blue ~ mic -
Pin 6 Green ~ PTT
Pin 7 brown/white ~ ground for the PTT
For a 3 pin xlr pin 2 is hot
Pin 3 is neg or return
Pin 1 is ground
In an unbalanced to balanced connection you sometimes need to connect pin 3 to 1 depending on your equipment. A swamp or a di box can lift the earth.
For the buttons here are the resistor values
Recording 1 ~ 866 ohms
Recording 2 ~ 1330 ohms
Recording 3 ~ 1820ohms
Recording 4 ~ 2490 ohms
Recording 5 ~ 3240 ohms
MEM ~ 4120 ohms
Up ~ 6810 ohms
Down ~ 12k ohms
I also put a 22uf cap across the output for filtering

(as a side note if you notice on most videos that feature the FT-891 radio there is an annoying scrolling. To make this video I had to used a feature on my camera called clear scan on a frequency of 56.59Hz - which is the frequency scan of the LCD screen to make it stop flickering.)

Great information for this radio! Resistor selection to desired action, hmmm my Renault Megan uses the same principle for its cruise control switches. And all odd values.

I will check with the company BHI and see if they still make their keyboard for direct entry of frequency that they offered for the FT857 series radios. I will also need to read through both the manual and my notes to see about a remote switch for my older unit. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment - I did start to make a build video but I made it over several weeks and I thought it would be better to cut to the important info. I ddi modify it a few times due to the small size and trying to squeeze everything into it

Is it possible to change the transmit mode with that system?

It is only possible to activate the men and voice functions. There are other features similar to the Yaesu remote it all depends on the resister value. The key is that the voice shortcuts save diving into deep into the menu each time
