I do like the idea of someone who is not the destined hero, but sort of hero-adjacent. Because let's be honest, that's the far more relatable scenario for most of us.... and, if your totally ordinary and mundane struggles are what ultimately enable the TRUE hero to do their thing, then maybe how lacking you are stings a little less in the long run. And hey... there's some value in not being able to rely on raw power. Maybe the hero can.... but if you can't, then you are FORCED to be smarter. I remember an old D&D campaign where I was, by a mile, the weakest member of the group.... and because of that, I was forced to think things through much more than those who could just smash their way through everything. To this day, I remember the DM lamenting, "Why is it always the low-level ones that are smart?"

I like the concept of the Clairvoyance spell being based on lesser spirits of the land recognizing her authority as a ruler. High level spells are more interesting when they work because of specific conditions like this. Plus in an RPG setting, the ability to view things from afar being something that is almost exclusively available to rulers would have some interesting tactical applications. Even if other people can manage to use it with enough power / effort, it's interesting when certain spells become signatures of royalty / etc because they are _all but_ unreachable to anybody else. It makes their authority become a sort of elite mage class unto itself. EDIT: of course in THIS story the protagonist recreated it an instant later, which kind of bummed me out. I wish they had kept it as an exclusive spell for her, to KEEP that magic highly significant as a signature of royalty.
