Mohamed El-Erian on inflation: 'be careful of a Fed that is too data dependent'

Hotter-than-expected inflation data sent stocks reeling on Tuesday, effectively dashing investors hopes for a March rate cut. However, comments from some Federal Reserve officials has provided reassurance that cuts will come eventually.
Allianz Chief Economic Advisor Mohamed El-Erian gave Yahoo Finance his three takeaways from this week's data and Fedspeak. He says that the path to the Fed's 2% inflation target is "not going to be smooth" and that the market had "over-embraced the notion of a very soft landing." The third thing he points to is the strong market reaction to the inflation data as an indicator of the depth of the market.
Another concern for investors was the weaker-than-expected January retail sales data. El-Erian, who also serves as President of Queens' College at the University of Cambridge, says that he hopes the data was a "blip." If it's not, El-Erian claims that he will be more concerned about the retail sales data than the inflation data. Why? "Because US exceptionalism has been based on the ability to continue to grow and grow powered by the household sector and powered by retail sales." It's why. EL-Erian says, the US has outperformed other economies.
Other "yellow" flashing data El-Erian is watching is what he is hearing from companies' in their quarterly reports. He notes that companies that have more exposure to lower-income households are seeing more softness. He also points to how guidance has varied strongly from company to company, meaning that "individual name selection is going to be critical... going forward."
Watch the video above to hear what El-Erian says about housing and why investors should "be careful of a Fed that is too data dependent."

I'd definitely jump on the boat if I knew a thing or two about day-trading, but then again what do I really know? I'm just looking for the right moves to grow and hedge my stagnant reserve of $370k from inflation.

Strategic investment is critical. My ideal investment is a diverse combination of stocks, bonds, and ETFs. It provides an excellent long-term return and has performed admirably thus far, but I needed to diversify my portfolio at some point, so I approached a coach who devised a system that aligned with my targets; so far, I've made a whopping $580k, and scaling my portfolio to a million by the end of the year does not seem too far-fetched to me.

The S&P 500, if one sticks with it, outpaces inflation by many percentage points. I personally don't care about the inflation. I just want my money to keep outgrowing the inflation rate. That is why I'm looking for companies now to put in $80k for a start. Just don't know how to proceed

Existing home supply is low. New home supply is higher than it has been in years. But, the builders are playing buy down games, free appliances, etc to keep their price point high by taking advantage of the existing home prices. Eventually they will capitulate on price as well, especially if interest rates stay above 6%. Existing home supply, especially considering Airbn'bust and so many homes being investor owned will begin to soften only if unemployment goes up.

The 'real inflation' has already hit households. So the cost of running a home has risen by 15%. That means that personal finances need to pay groceries first, and 'luxuries' afterwards. And nearly everything else is a disposable luxury- from designer trainers, to going out to dinner once a week. That s before home insurance doubled, car insurance doubled and health care tripled.

The bailouts from the Gfc, the continued deficit spending, and bad governance for the past few decades has finally started to take its toll. We have been exporting inflation for years. The dollar is declining and losing its value. The treasury is trying to keep selling treasury bonds. We no longer make anything. We only buy things from other countries with some exceptions. We sell our ideas. We’re supporting wars on two fronts. It’s unsustainable.

I dunno....right now it looks like US markets are the best-looking house in a bad 'global neighborhood' but how can that be sustainable? I mean, if those economies are in decline, doesn't that eventually pull down earnings for US-based companies also? The answer is above my pay grade, but the imminent recessions in Europe, Japan and the (potential) major economic crisis in China could collectively overpower the strong economic fundamentals in the US. Or so it would seem.
@alexireland8334
@alexireland8334 3 ай бұрын
This is empirical, but I'd have to believe US-based companies are far, far more dependent on domestic consumers than large producers in other countries are. I don't think the US can operate entirely within a vacuum, but I do think it's fair to believe that the US can avoid a crisis that originates within EM or Europe.

@@alexireland8334 You're probably right....I just checked and about 12-15% of products made in the US are exported, but the percentage varies, based on industry. Example, 20% of agriculture is exported. So, a downturn globally would only have limited impact on the US economy, it seems.

Even the “smartest” don’t look behind the numbers, apparently. Retail sales is not inflation adjusted, which means so called strong previous numbers, largely meant people were paying more for goods because of inflation; not because the consumer was buying more. It just costs more to buy stuff. The fact that the latest retail numbers are weak is even more of a concern.. In terms of inflation numbers, they are cherry picked and not reflective of true inflation. Look at the ppi data that came out. This number was much hotter. It’s not manipulated like cpi is and will translate into higher costs. Inflation has bottomed not topped.
