OH BOLLOCKS we forgot to pick a word. It's alright, we did it off air: next week's word of the week is 'Tired'. Anyway, Gabriel prerecords us a video of that most improbable of shooter releases, recording the footage in teeny-tiny shitty-resolution-vision so blame him for that. Let's see if we can beat last week's misogyny record.

Fun fact: The Holsom Twins are voiced by the voice actress of Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons in the German version, and Duke has the voice actor of Bruce Willis. So if you played the game in German, you got greeted by two Ralph Wiggums sucking off Bruce Willis. How's that for a mental image?

You know, looking at this game 5 years later made me realize how fucking straight-faced this game is. It's not a self-aware anarchic roast of itself like, say, Saints Row 4 was, nor is it a satire of the modern military shooter like what Spec Ops did with its soul-crushing story and character development alongside standard MMS gameplay. So many games came out after this and did everything unintentionally better; all this game succeeded in doing was stagnate. You know what would've been a great development for this game? If at the final level, we see the aliens slaughtering humans left to right and people protesting against Duke Nukem for ostensibly doing fuck-all to stop the alien race and Duke's Ego bar slowly depletes as he realizes that his hedonistic lifestyle left him hollow and worthless. Then, when his ego bar almost depletes, his health bar fully regenerates, now labeled "Altruism" as he destroys the alien hivemind and saves humanity. Wouldn't change the shit gameplay, though.

spot on statement. right on. and to add even more insult. the ORIGINAL duke nukem 3d indeed was self-aware! duke was the only funny character in the whole game. everthing is is serious, grim and gritty. with only a few jokes and a break here and there. unlike this game which is so full of himself that it's oozing all over the place
@hugobernardoferreirapintop8557
@hugobernardoferreirapintop8557 8 жыл бұрын
That's the least Duke Nukem finale you could possibly imagine. If he saw people protesting after he fucked up a thousand tons of aliens he'd most likely slaughter the aliens next to them with explosives, inflating his already overly massive ego and probably giving you an infinite health bar for the boss. Hail to the king baby, because he has balls of steel. What this game needed was the childish, over the top jokes that these developers clearly were never able to do. This required a level of obnoxious that has not been in the market for decades.

An interesting concept, but a little on the nose. The difference between Duke 3D and Duke Forever is the tongue in cheek delivery. The world of Duke 3D is completely bonkers and Duke's larger than life character fits right in. It is, for all intents and purposes, a cartoon. Duke Nukem 3D satirized the macho man hero cliche by reveling in it to extremes. See also Snake Pliskin in Escape from New York. To suddenly switch the tone to match something like Spec Ops would probably come off as cheap emotional manipulation, but I could see a Saint's Row style roast working quite well.
@yosefyonin6824
@yosefyonin6824 8 жыл бұрын
nah, the difference between duke 3d and duke forever is that in the original. duke was the ONLY funny thing in this game. you fought legitimately scary monsters in a ruined world and apart from a few secrets the only funny thing is the protagonist himself. in duke forever the whole world is as dumb a literal joke like duke himself. so instead of duke seeimg humoursly out of place in a grim world, its the WHOLE GAME out of place of gaming as a whole
@Gunman610

The idea of Duke living in an ego hell reminds me of an episode of The Twilight Zone, where a gangster is shot by police and wakes up in the afterlife. He gets anything he wants, wins every game, gets every girl and realizes that since he never fails, there's no challenge and his existence is meaningless and miserable. That's when he's told that he's in Hell.

@spiderjerusalem100

Probably because they're blinded by nostalgia for Duke Nukem 3D. It's like the people who keep defending Sonic despite the fact that his games have been getting shittier and shittier for over 10 years. This game makes fun of other games like Halo and Dead Space but it's inferior to those games in every single way. Maybe they were trying to be ironic?

LinX1515 I've not played Duke3d, but I imagine abstraction and lesser graphics matters a lot. Like, for instance, in something like Vice City I don't feel so bad for civilians and police dying because of their abstractions and exaggerations. In something like GTA IV, I tend to not like killing because it's much more realistic and can be disturbing (even just hitting a pedestrian by accident when not shooting anybody can feel kind of bothersome). I imagine that's the issue with DNF versus 3D. Even if the actual content is pretty similar, the much more realistic graphics increases how disturbing that scene is. It's also kind of baffling it was left in, as I think most people were pretty dumbfounded that they'd do something like that in a modern game. To use another example, tons of people love Mario as a plumber in a fantastical world, but I imagine if you tried to make it more realistic looking a lot of people would be put off by that. Abstraction definitely matters.

I'd say that in Pitch Black, Riddick is a pretty human character with flaws and who makes mistakes. He gets captured by the bounty hunter several times in the movie and gets his ass handed to him by the monsters when he actually faces more than one of them, which is when they're actually dangerous. His ability to see in the dark is also one of his major weaknesses, making him close to helpless without his goggles when in light. And perhaps most importantly, he's not always the shining beacon of right and reason and isn't out to save anyone but himself. But after Pitch Black, they realized how popular the character was, so they exaggerated him and made him superhuman and something of a hero, instead of a criminal who doesn't mind hurting others for his own gain. He became much more like the type of character you speak of. I actually enjoy the second movie too, but in the later movies I agree on him being mostly a character that's supposed to cool by being the best at basically everything.

@Carnagath82
@Carnagath82 10 жыл бұрын
He's an action movie character, since when do those need to have flaws? I loved Pitch Black, not so much Chronicles because it felt too polished for its own good, but the third movie, Riddick, was also really fun since he basically plays the role of the Predator from the Schwarzenegger movie, stalking people and picking them off one by one. I find it ironic that people watch tongue-in-cheek 90's action movie "tributes" that are oh-so-self aware and winking ironically at the viewer, fuck that. You liked 90's action movies, at least the good ones? That's what Riddick (2013) is, but it isn't afraid that it won't fill your hourly shitty sarcasm quota, it REVELS in the fact that it's a 90's action movie. You can't not respect that..

They made the same thing with Rambo, First Blood portrayed him as a flawed human being forcefully turned into a killing machine to survive vietnam witnessing the gruesome death of his only friends while being manipulated by Trautman to see him as a father until he broke down at the end and Rambo 2 made him over the top
@Farscryer0
@Farscryer0 9 жыл бұрын
In Pitch Black, Riddick could get away with the holes in his character because he was essentially a "mercenary slasher" contracted to fight monsters. Its like getting Jason Voorhees to sit down and ask a price for his help to kill someone other than yourself, your very own pet monster (at least for a time). Once you try to start fleshing out his character though, like Chronicles of Riddick did, that when you find out how flat his character was all along. And there's nothing wrong with that, but a writer needs to remember that flat characters only work in the genre they were designed within; in Riddick's case, a survival horror story. And to keep this relevant to the video, Duke Nukem only works if you can make the world around him more interesting, funny, and lovable than Duke himself. Duke 3D did this by having interesting weapons and inventory tools, good environments to fight in, and adding discoverable and interactive "set dressings." You take all that away, or try get Duke "in" on the joke, and the whole thing falls flat.

Hiding in a corner is the LAST possible way Duke should be able to recover Ego. The more these guys talk about it, the more it makes sense to me. At the outset of DNF, Duke really should have been a washed-up loser who needs to redeem himself and become cool again through the events of the game's plot. It would make for better comedy, a more engaging story, and it would cheekily reflect how the DN series has fallen from the public eye since the early 2000's. I'd love to see Duke starting out as an obese, drunken wretch who's getting his house repossessed by the IRS, leaving him with just his old motorcycle, his trusty side-shooter, a bottle of cheap whiskey, and memories of the good old days. When the aliens invade, he'd throw himself into the fray in an attempt to turn his life around, gunning down armies of goons, blowing up big boss monsters, and stopping their plans to destroy the world. He'd become cool again by overcoming adversity. The ending should be him making his big comeback: he's flush with triumph after saving the earth again and people legitimately love him once more.

I assume this is the right place for questions, so here: So what do you guys make of the whole discounted AAA pc games situation? On PC, AAA game prices tend to drop rapidly and this leads to an odd situation where they start competing with indie titles. Ignoring Steam Early Access and such, PC games used to be a great place for indie titles, and one of the key selling points for indie titles was the low price point. However, I would think any competent indie team is going to face incredibly difficulty releasing a title for $10-15, especially if their development team is beyond 5 people eating ramen. These days for $15 you can pick up huge AAA game packages that aren't even that old. E.g. Saints Row Ultimate Franchise Pack is $13.74 and contains SR2, 3, and 4 with all DLCs. That's pretty damn hard to compete with, especially if you're selling a game with a runtime of under 5hrs.
@dennett316
@dennett316 10 жыл бұрын
Indie games will always do well so long as they offer something you can't get in the AAA scene. Even the people who would buy Saints Row as you describe it would still pick up a good Indie game for the same price that offered less because quantity doesn't necessarily guarantee quality or value of experience. Sometimes you want to wreck shit in a wacky open world, sometimes you want to play a grim game about surviving in a war zone. There's room for both. $10-15 for something like This War of Mine still represents good value when compared to, say, a movie ticket, or a few drinks at a bar, or even the average spend in Starbucks. It's just that $13.74 for those Saints Row games is a mind-boggling deal.
@ASpaceOstrich
@ASpaceOstrich 10 жыл бұрын
In general games are selling for less and less, it's getting far harder to make games for that reason, as an indie team doesn't have the marketing to make selling games for the fucking pittance they go for now sustainable.

A better question lately has been: "why own an Xbone or Ps4 at all when they're just PC's too?". Most of the software for them is already digitally "bigbrothered" through connectivity or Origin the same way Steam is. And it seems every title coming out for them lately is piggy backing an increasing portion of its budget on microtransactions or DLC/"Passes". So literally the only difference between those "boxes" and a desktop PC now is that the Desktop has a much better potential of maintaining 60FPS, while using the xbone/Ps4 instead is often admitting that you need a built-in aimbot to compete in modern military shooters. The only "console" still left that acts like an actual console, is the Wii.

I don't know, "broken" is probably the deal-breaker for me. I remember I had one of the later Turok games for the 'Cube, and they gave you this magic pistol that turned into a silenced sniper rifle, and in between two levels it disappeared out of my inventory. Lucky break that next stage was a stealth interlude, because now I had no stealth weapon, to use all the pistol bullets they left lying around! That turd went back to EB, and after a bit of complaining about it they took it back as defective and refunded my money.

The reason for the "clarification" is to make it clear that a game doesn't have to be dull (Devoid of action, formulaic, slow paced etc) to be boring. It just has to fail to keep the interest of the player. All kinds of exciting shit can happen but the player doesn't care. That's what I mean by boring. That's the greatest failure of a game - The failure to engage. It's a subjective thing what qualifies as boring and unengaging, obviously.

You know, about the Shenmue 3 thing, I think it IS worth to make a long-awaited sequel, because sometimes they do live up to the hopes. I just finished Tesla Effet for example and it definitely lived up to my expectations of both seeing a new adventurous story with my favourite bumbler and solving the dangling plot threads left by the cliffhanger of Overseer. It was worth making and it was worth playing. I think Shenmue 3 would be the same, worth making just to see, at least, the end of the story.

flaminshotgun It attracts all the PC/Tumblr creeps, for some reason. It's also just gotten worse with popularity. Having been introduced to the series a little ways before the new series began to catch in, I came in with Tom Baker, and can still remeber when The Doctor wasn't an overpowered badass/god/christ allegory, but rather a weird little man in a box who knew altogether too much for his own good. David Tennant actually did quite well in his run IMHO, which I considered an improvement over Eccelston. It has some episodes which I would rank among my all-time favorites ("Blink", "Silence in the Library", "Midnight", "The Family of Blood"). But then Stephen Moffat (who wrote many of the above, actually) took over and shat the bed royally with The Silence arc, which is soooo duuumb. Which is a shame, because The Silence are a really cool design, and would be great in another, less stupid, plot. Doubly so because Matt Smith is also quite a good doctor: he was just put in bad stories. But my all time favorites remain The Key To Time Saga, The City of Death, and The E-Space Trilogy. Because Tom Baker was awesome, Douglas Adams was amazing, and The E-Space Trilogy is really that good.

Duke Nukem Forever... the development cycle spanning all of my college years, working at a game store, working for the gaming press, and then owning my own game store. Actually, two different game stores. Then months after it comes out, I'm visiting a distributor and he has it for $15. You usually pay $17 wholesale for a $20 game, so I felt that was a strong indicator of where that had gone. Then I learned that was actually the retail price. Lot of people took a bath on that one.
