A few years have gone by and I am writting to thank you, Josh Holmes, for this increbible and inspiring review of the Adventure Island. Your review made me wish strongly to have one of these boats. I finally bought my AI about an year ago and I have been having a great time here in Brazil with this remarkable little sailboat.

I did it! I ended up buying one after watching your video. I have always wanted one and the new addition of the vantage seating just made it more appealing - plus the "Just do it" words kept resonating inside my head everytime I thought about it. I have ended up loving it so much that I bought one for my wife too. Thank you for making a great video review of such an amazing kayak!

I have got to say your video is amazing I have been on the water for a long time. in 2010 that was taken away from me. injuries from war had me down. I wasn't able to get back on the water tell last year and let me tell you I missed it. seeing your video has sealed the deal for me. I'm getting one. my son would have a blast out there with me.

Yeah man, it was the guy at the end that sold it for me (OK, maybe not). Great video but I was already sold. Versatile craft for all weathers, wind or no wind. Thanks for putting the effort in though, great promo for a great boat/kayak/sailing dingy/whatever... Picked one up last week and look forward to sailing it in "sunny" Scotland.

It's barely changed since 2015. Different sail colours and 180 drive are the only changes, both of which aren't really a big deal. The sail is merely cosmetic and the advantage of the 180 drive is somewhat lost on the Island boats. In contrast, the 2015 vs 2014 version was a big leap forward, which is why I went to the trouble of doing this review

The Hobie seat is the most comfortable in it's class, but I do prefer the windshield option available in the Windrider 16.

Personally I'd take a roller furling sail over a boom, and you can pry my Miragedrive from my cold dead fingers :-D There is a windshield option for Hobie Islands to, but I only know one person who uses it.

When camping out like this how much fresh water do you bring and how do you package it for travel? Have been trying to set up a little kayak camping trip, maybe just 3-4 miles and just one night. Fresh water seems to be my biggest uncertainty; I would like to rinse the salt off at least once a day.
@yakabout
@yakabout 7 жыл бұрын
We pack about 22 - 24 litres each for a 7 day trip, though there is a water source we can fall back on if required. Its not guaranteed safe for drinking, but we can use it for washing etc. We pack water in a mix of water bags (MSR Drom bags), 2 or 1.5 lt bottles and water casks (like wine casks, purchased from super markets) though we have had a couple of accidents with these. Dingoes got to one of them and carelessly punctured another

I wonder just how much big water it can take without getting into real trouble. I realize you have some big water down there, but where I live...the east coast of Canada...the water is cold..ice cold, so sticking close to the coast..as in visual, is prudent IMHO. The weather can come up REAL fast here. I love the lines, the rig, the versatility, but worry about taking it into the "big" stuff or getting caught out. I have raced open ocean in large vessels (106') and bays and coasts in Snipes. Done some fairly hairy stuff in the Snipe, but I was young, and was fast on the centre board and was used to knock downs and kelp swamps lol. I'm 62 now, and would rather not have to call the CG because I chose too small a boat for too much water. Any reassuring comments would be appreciated, as I REALLY want one :-)
@yakabout
@yakabout 7 жыл бұрын
You'd probably be surprised what the boat can handle in the right hands, but for sure there are limitations with this boat, as there are any boat. If you have a look at my youtube channel page, look at the top header image and you will see me sailing the old model through a bommie producing 5 metre waves. That should give you an idea what I have been prepared to put it through (I am not trying to recommend anyone try this because I don't). And I couldn't tell you how many times I have been so far away from land I lost sight of it. That said, I do try to avoid rough conditions, try my best to avoid surf at all costs, I keep my boat in tip-top optimal condition and I spare no expense when it comes to safety gear. I have never had a show-stopper issue and I have put in thousands of KM on the water on these things, often with the boat fully loaded with over a weeks worth of food, water, camping and fishing gear. I couldn't tell you how I think it might perform in your neck of the woods, but here in Aus, they are simply awesome. But yes, if you're nervous about taking one of these things off shore, then you probably shouldn't.

The original AI (after the update rudder) was a sports car. The new AI is a bus. It just depends on what you want to do with it. I do agree that the new AI is a better fishing platform.
@yakabout
@yakabout 4 жыл бұрын
I think that depends on your definition of sports car when comparing the concept to these boats, because in our experience the newer boat out-paced the older one in most but not all circumstances. The stronger the wind, the rougher it gets, and especially if there's more weight on board, the newer model will out-perform the older one. We put this to the test on a few 60+km trips where we had a variety of models to compare directly. We also had years of doing the very same trip using the older models under our belts for reference. As I said in the clip, for what we're doing, the newer model is superior, and not by a little bit. That said, in lower winds we often saw the older one outperform the newer one, especially when the wind is rolling in from behind. I think the biggest advantage the early one has over the new one (apart from reduced bulk and weight) is that the kayak hull performs much better when used as a kayak. Both good boats, pros and cons for both.
