If you have an anti-grav technology that makes things levitate, why would you make dozens of kilometers of railway that floats rather than simply making trains float ? 😏 Nice video BTW thanks
@Yakez42
@Yakez42 Жыл бұрын
Well, it actually makes sense to make levitating track stretch over levitating train. Not so much when it is full system. Simple principle here is how much all your trains weight vs how much track weight. Trains are just multitude heavier than several hundred meters of levitating track. Assuming that you need energy to levitate...
@ABaumstumpf

@@Yakez42 "Trains are just multitude heavier than several hundred meters of levitating track." The tracks still need to lift the train and in all likelyhood they would be far heavier than the train.

@@Yakez42 Better explanation: a free flying machine that carries cargo between points is also in the game. They're called drones, and notice that you have to feed them batteries for their power needs. The "levitation buoys" run off the same power grid as the factories connected to the rail, just like the train itself, which also conveniently connects distant factory buildings onto the same power grid. The investment in infrastructure offers plentiful returns for your effort. ^.^

Btw your builds are out of this world, sometimes I wonder how people even come up with some designs. I really like the Viaduct look! It would suit my factory perfectly, though I noticed you didn't go through how to do a curve. I have some 90 degree turns and I am unsure how Viaducts work with curves. The single rail technique is what I'm using now, just putting some concrete pillars underneath, but I'd be curious to see more complicated curve designs!
@Yakez42
@Yakez42 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, viaduct curves are in the ballpark of "problem for future me". I just tend to swap to pillar designs on the turns and make instant 30-90 degree turns over making monumental long curves. Also I kind of do not see the way to make an actual curve inside blueprint designer, since I need like 11 tiles of space for proper curve without using mods. This is why I just avoid them for now

I made my blueprints in a way that i can snap them all to each other. Only thing i dont bother with is curves cause that is a lot of work (altough i could make some 10º turn blueprints i suppose). I just make a 90º turn and keep going. But my ramp can snap on both sides allowing me to make a ramp up or down with it. I honestly just want to wait till belts/rails/pipes/cables auto connect between blueprints.

I've found the most effective way of building railways in Satisfactory was waiting for drones, and never building them at all. Why bust chops like that I have no idea. Even in Factorio, it was just more complicated than worth the effort. I'm quite happy with my drones so far... closing in on the last Spacey Elevator stuff, and my nuclear plants have now issues, so sometimes the best way to do something is NOT to do something! I do have to admit it took me until grad school to truly understand the empty set. What an epiphany.

I built a factory that is floating on several platforms in the sky, but had no idea how to really round the build up in terms of cosmetic and "how it levitates". There's one thing that I need to take issue with and that's the fact that your spans are rather short. A single foundation in Satisfactory is 8 meters. Modern viaduct spans are about 50 meters on average. That means that there would be at least 6 foundations in between each pillar. As far as double decker bridges go, the pillars need to be a single solid unit from top to bottom. Interrupted pillars would fail in real life. Each viaduct span has its own isolation bearing.
@Yakez42
@Yakez42 3 ай бұрын
One of my ideas to have longer spans was just to offset column to very edge of blueprint and cut it in half. This way only by rotating a single blueprint you can have technically 60 meter spans! On other topic... well I am F&B manager, not really an engineer, really love all the extra small detail I can learn from pros above common info on the web xD

Belt spans with items on them have way bigger impact on object count. If there is any object optimization to be done first target is 1 mile long spans of belts. And then there is no issue with playing after hitting object count. And I do not know for sure yet about object count on the new engine.

Levitation looks great, but best just for a few small things that would actually benefit - like the vehicles them self, or when spanning some part where support-pillars don't work or would be a problem. For trains i personally think some more slender but solid pillars look best for a futuristic setting. Levitating infrastructure in general are a disaster waiting to happen, costing a fortune and offering no benefits. Why would you waste energy and resources to make stuff levitate? Large building already have very strict requirements on their foundations, making them airborn just means that you would now have to have a way thicker and more solid base (making it more costly), somehow anchor the building in place, and you then still can't really have water, gas, electricity or sewage connections.
@Yakez42
@Yakez42 9 ай бұрын
Modern supertall skyscrapers are already "disaster waiting to happen". They have active counterbalance systems in place, and those use power. In event of natural disaster they are not only exposed to power shortage, but also lose their active defense. And still it is a thing. And backups always exist. Also there are a lot of places nearly impossible to be covered with physical infrastructure at reasonable cost. Like straight of Gibraltar or Nordic Fiords. Having cheaper active system there would make more sense, than pouring like 20% of continent GDP into construction project. And we already construct things like huge drawbridges that is also purely active system to provide one axis of transportation. Why? Because they cheaper, than bigger bridge. They definitely not safer.
@ABaumstumpf
@ABaumstumpf 9 ай бұрын
@@Yakez42 "They have active counterbalance systems in place" Most still use a simple passive tunes mass. But yes, that problem exists and would just be way worse if the buildings where afloat. "Like straight of Gibraltar or Nordic Fiords. " Yeah - as i said - the few regions where normal structures would be prohibitively expensive or impossible. "And we already construct things like huge drawbridges that is also purely active system " They aren't. Those are normal static structures that can be moved out of the way. The waterways are not powered nor is the bridged actively held in suspension when the other traffic is crossing it.
