Thule T2 pro. Set it and forget it. I even throw my wife's Electra beach cruiser on there with the swing arm below the fender, which had me nervous, but made a 3 hr trip totally secure. Thanks for posting this review! (2016 Santa Cruz 5010 is what's usually rigged on here)

I still use a Saris Thelma 3. Works well for my mtb and cx bikes, really solid, doesn’t block my license plate when upright and it’s made in the USA.

We have the latest version of the Dr. Tray...2 bike/2"hitch on 1/2 ton truck. Works well...BUT...be aware, that even when placed exacly where the instructions and our dealer showed us to place it, it still managed to come loose. Three to four clicks...700x38 gravel bike tires with 40lbs. On most trips, they hold fine, but a couple of times they have "shook" loose I asssume. This was on good paved roads...normal bridge-ridges, road bumps and such. Only on the outside bike...twice. I contacted Yakima and they put me in the que, so we shall see what solution they come up with.

Here's more information I researched and discovered, to assist with the lack of specific product information in the video. This information is as current as 8-26-19. REI sells the Dr Tray, it's probably going to be the most popular resource for consumers. Unfortunately, REI is still stocked with the original DR Tray design, not this "newly updated" version. REI is unable to order you a redesigned DR Tray with a guarantee that it's the new one. Yakima appears to be hell bent on stocking big box stores with the previous version, to get rid of them. If you go to Yakima's website, there are no indicators if the $599 DR Tray option is the newly redesigned one, as Yakima did not THINK to call it the "DR Tray II"... or similar. Per Yakima's customer service, "we do not guarantee that the DR Tray you're purchasing is the newly redesigned one, you'll have to buy it... unbox it and check the time stamp to confirm" That came straight from Yakima. If you decide to pull the trigger on a DR TRAY and cross your finger in hopes that it's the newly redesigned one... upon unboxing check to see if the time stamp is higher than "8082" and you're good to go. Obviously the redesigned parts will be an indicator as well, but unfortunately there is no way to 100% confirm it's the new design prior to purchase.

Where do I find the time stamp? Is it somewhere on the box where I can see b4 purchasing?
@lisafenyes30524 жыл бұрын
Excellent review and definitely sealed our decision. Here’s my problem...when we purchased the tray, my husband made sure to ask if it was the 2.0 version and the rep actually found that on the box...according to my husband. However, it’s the original trays. Now, your review is from a year ago. In my opinion, the old trays should not even still be in boxes. We purchased thru our local bike shop where we buy pretty much everything bike related. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Start with bike shop or go straight to Yakima? Yakima’s customer service is not open yet...I’m in VA and their hours are Pacific Time. TIA for any suggestions. The rack is truly awesome! I wanted a rack I could easily use without the help of my husband, and this one checks that, and many more boxes. It just that we’ve experience exactly what you did with back wheels while driving. Thx!

I would just give Yakima a call. As far as I know they completely discontinued the old tray. They may want you to go through your bike shop but it's worth a try to start with them.

Great job highlighting the short comings of the original design to Yakima and getting them to fix these design flaws. Out of curiosity, did they send you the tray/new parts for free or did you (and anyone else with an original Dr. Tray) need to buy them?

Clint, I usually agree with your recommendations, however I can't do that with this kludge of a bike rack. Totally looks like they used a whole bunch of ideas, but never had a comprehensive design philosophy. The 1up still is the leader, by a long ways!
@ClintGibbs6 жыл бұрын
I love the looks of the 1up. My biggest issue with it was the fact that I carry so many different tire size bikes from BMX to 27.5 to 29 to 700c. I would have to use a tool to adjust for each tire size.
@johnwilliamson94536 жыл бұрын
Not sure you have actually used the 1up, but that (flexibility) is one of the beauties of the 1up. I have run a 26", 27.5, 700c, (no BMX) in most widths up to 3" all without any tool adjustment. I can also move bikes back/forth to get the bars/pedals to not interfere very easily. Mine is almost five years old, carry four bikes at times, and still zero issues. Sometime when you get an opportunity to talk to some owners about their experience, I'd bet you'd like it. Thanks again for all your excellent instructional videos, they have been quite helpful to myself and many others.

I use the kuat nv. Good rack but the ratchet arm internal hardware has corroded over time since I always leave the rack on my car. Another gripe is the rear tire strap doesn’t fit my krampus 3 inch tires unless I deflate my tires significantly. Nice to see other options.
@videoviewer20086 жыл бұрын
Kuat may replace the arm under warranty. They aren't hard to swap out. They also have a strap extension.
@Cesium676 жыл бұрын
Ok looks like it has a lifetime warranty. Never checked I just swapped the ratchet arms. I was using 6 inch bungee cords to secure the rear wheel but nearly lost the bike on the highway through a depression in the road. I was aware of that extended strap. That and the fact that it accommodates plus size tires is the reason I bought the kuat.
@frankstrobel43506 жыл бұрын
Nice rack (almost went with yakima) but i don’t like the one arm racks....if you lose tire pressure there is a good chance the bike can come loose and may come off rack. My 1up with two arms....it may get loose and rock...but not really coming off rack. Anyway....good that they improved the design.

Hi Clint. Thanks for your video. I decided for this bike rack thanks to your previous video almost two years ago. Last week i had to travel with an Ebike (Very heavy) on a gravel road, with the old rear wheel strap, and it broke while i was driving. Fortunatey it felt to the right side of the car and nothing happened (Safe!!!). Have you had the chance to mount an ebike on this rack? How would you recommend to do it?
@ClintGibbs3 жыл бұрын
I have not mounted an e-bike on this rack. In fact I no longer have the rack. It's been replaced by the quickrstuff Mach 2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3yqgGSBit6thMk
@ShortGuac Жыл бұрын
Do you think that this is rack is overkill if 99% there will only be 1 bike on it? I found a few on discount that are only $100 more than buying a single bike rack plus $250 for an add-on. But this seems huge to be sticking out the rear if I only need 1 bike carried.

What was the determining factor when deciding to buy the Yakima over the Thule T2 Pro Xt? Was it the quick release allowing you to move the rails away from or towards each other? Keep the great videos coming!
@ClintGibbs6 жыл бұрын
It was mainly due to the amount of separation between bikes on the Dr. Tray.
@JohnStevensonGalvin4 жыл бұрын
Great Video, thanks. Your video seems to be the only place that shows these updates, not even Yakima's own website. Is this officially a V2 version of Dr.Tray, is there any other way to identify this one over the older one?

Not that I know of. But I'm told that any new rack that you purchase will be the newer version.

What hitch mount did you get for your Accord? Did you self install it? Did you have to cut any of the bumper?

I was able to make mine work with a trail bike by bending the stop upward but I'm still having all the other issues you spoke of.
