Is he? Is he crazy? I think he is more sane than most of the people in real life. He(most of the time) helps people in streets. He protects the girls in his cabaret club and takes care of them as he is their own brother. He still loves Makoto like any sane person does. I am saying this because he is sane enough to sacrifice his own desires to make Makoto's life safe and secure. He never killed anyone yet! He respects and loves Kiryu. I think he acts crazy to create fear in his enemies' hearts. And also he must hide himself from makoto, so he dresses and acts like a batshit crazy yakuza in front of anyone and everyone who has connections with the love of his life! Again from afar he protects her.

its actually the reverse. well a little. majimas not really a serious dude, but the mad dog is a facade in of itself. he just likes to have fun, he realized this at the end of zero, that people like Nishitani have a much more fun life than trying to act cold blooded. you see sometimes majima dropping the mad dog mask(listen to As Long As You’re Here)

Majima is not crazy (well yes he is but hear me out). Like the person said it's a facade he puts and really only puts it off for people close like kiryu, daigo, and saejima. He doesn't want to be a puppet to anyone like he was for the majority of yakuza 0 and what better way than to be the oddball and be unpredictable so no one could ever pull the strings on him but himself. So I think he does it for 3 reason's really. He want's to have fun in life, it's harder for him to be controlled, and also a thrid reason I didn't mention. I think he also does it as a coping mechanism. I mean just think about it. He lost his love for makoto for his wellbeing, his future wife got an abortion with his child, spent a lot of time feeling responsible for saejima's incarceration just to name a few. Deep down that's taken a toll on his psyche but he tries not to show it. By living in the moment and acting crazy he can just keep his mind off it cause if he doesn't it'll just eat away at him. But that's just what I think.

Without a doubt; for some reason I can’t believe anything else about his sudden transformation. Majima HAD to be crazy in the beginning, what about his secret fighting style where he fights like a lunatic? Or him wailing around like the cutie he is, I can’t help but believe that he was trapped to be proper against his own will to keep his “Lord of the Night” title, which was thrown his way whether he wanted it or not, working his heels off and being trapped by his debt, having to work for the Grand. Eventually, when all of these restraints came off, he could be who he truly was, and pay kudos to those crazy bastards that really meant something to Goro. I can’t explain his sudden outburst during karaoke any other way besides letting lose a bit in the noggin’ ☹️
