Monty: what is the acting budget in this game All the fans: YES

Not just the acting budget, the music, the research, this series is Sega's game of thrones, except so far without the disappointing ending that ruins the entire series

For the point the game is trying to make about the money, I think there is a detail that gives it a subtle message. This game doesn't just take place during the bubble economy, it takes place in december 1988, the last month of the bubble economy. All those characters are blinded by, and chasing after a huge pile of money that is going to be worth *NOTHING* by the end of the month.

As someone that fought for chase to tell some of the sub-stories, yes, it doesnt match the main story. But it makes the world more real, even if some of the stuff is insane. In Mafia movies, or other some such, its easy to just fall into thinking the world revolves around Scarface, or The Godfather, or others. But there is still a world outside of the underworld, and the sub-stories, even in wackiness, help remind us there are just normal people out there trying to achieve their dreams and be happy.

2:21 Don't worry, Monty. I recently played through 0-2 and I can't for the life of me remember most of the cast's names. Edit: I AM HERE FOR MONTY GOING INSANE OVER THE CABARET CLUB AND ALL THE SIDE CONTENT. Chase wasn't joking though, that club management is one of the best parts of 0 and could be sold as its own small stand alone game.

Going from the Cabaret Club in 0 and 2 Kiwami to 3 is like getting hit by a bus, the one in 3 IS SOOOOOO BAD, I'm so glad they improved it. IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE CATCHY MUSIC FEVER TIME MUSIC IS THE BEST.

1:04:00 Kiryu would never give Tachibana up for at least 2 reasons. 1 it's not in his nature to abandon people he's decided to protect and 2 his adoptive father wants to help him. Betraying Tachibana would be like betraying him.

I personally think that, while sometimes the things a character we're supposed to sympathize with has done stretch credulity, Yakuza as a series has always been about highlighting the humanity of criminals, that in the world of crime people will do horrible, unspeakable things, but are ultimately still *people* , and deserve to be treated as such, even if they don't necessarily deserve forgiveness, and thats why its so hard to find a character to root for who hasn't done something horrible, because thats what this world forces you to do, and they're still people who can be sympathized with. There's a great video on youtube that unfortunately has spoilers for later games and so cannot be watched till this lore dump series is over, called crime and humanity in Yakuza, which was made by someone who's father went to jail when they were a child, and as a result he spent a lot of his childhood interacting with and getting to personally know a lot of criminals, and how he really appreciated how human the games made them. Anyways I hope Chase has enough time to mention the cult substory, even though I'm pretty sure we're just gonna focus on the main story for the next part

just checked the comments to make sure no one pointed this out, but the three of you have disappointed me deeply. "I don't get why the rival cabaret clubs are named after planets and one is randomly called Moon-- and why Moon is the most powerful" FIGHTING EVIL BY MOONLIGHT. WINNING LOVE BY DAYLIGHT. NEVER RUNNING FROM A REAL FIGHT. SHE IS THE ONE NAMED SAILOR MOOOON. Y'all lack C U L T U R E. Even Batman clocked Martian Manhunter's secret identity as a Japanese school girl named Rei Hino as being based on Sailor Mars. Bruce Wayne canonically has read/watched sailor moon enough to know what Sailor Mars' civilian identity is. A man of true culture right there. (Oh and if anyone doubts this connection, the colors the main gals wear all corelate with whatever sailor senshi the club takes its name from. And there are definitely similarities in personalities or hobbies from each senshi to the main girl from the corresponding club.)

I have a feeling that we aren't going to get through all the games. This is the first time I've seen Monty this put out by a game and Neil being all over the place with how he feels about it. Though, I do find it interesting that we have this gradient of perspectives when it relates to this game, I've been gettin a lot more bad vibes than good from the listening duo. (I will put in my two cents, that I find it strange that people would think certain "material" shouldn't exist in games or stories for that matter because they disagree with it on a moral level. I tend to advocate for letting stories tell it how it needs to be told and sometimes that requires context, sometimes it requires bad people to be vile, and sometimes for good people to have flaws/weakness or even find out that they aren't as good as we thought they were. Not discounting preference, as everyone has their own likes or dislikes, but I've think I've heard Monty comment multiple times in the last video and this one for why certain things even exist in the game, how our protagonists are the way that they are, and even leave when he didn't want to listen to it. Edit: A little curious though since there is some equally bad things or even worse in some cases in the Metal Gear series.)

18:20 You know, that gives me an interesting gimmick idea for future Yakuza lore dumps. Since the side content is self-paced, you could have two summaries- main plot and side content- and let the other two choose when they feel like switching to the side content and back.

Normally, it takes me, at most, about 2 days to go through one of these videos. Sometimes I'll do one sitting, sometimes 2. And it's taken me a week to get about 2/3s through this one. And, I want to make it very clear that I do not blame any of you guys for this. My issue is purely with the game. I've been told for ages that I should try Yakuza. I have friends who love it. And listening to this? I think I hate it. It feels like it absolutely cannot maintain a tone. I've nothing against shifting tones. The tonal whiplash of Lisa: The Painful is a big part of what makes it one of my favourite stories in gaming. But that was a clever way of causing shocking emotional moments, and sudden tension releases. This just feels like a mess of clashing styles that actively doesn't want to focus. It raises these mysteries that I'm interested in, and then goes "And then your character acts like they give precisely zero shits about this to go do random other crap." and so I internally, subconsciously, go "Oh, I guess I shouldn't care either." And people say these side parts are important aspect of the story? When you go to Gold Saucer to play minigames for a couple hours in the original FF7, it's treated as something unimportant to the story to the degree of being non-canon. When you do minigames in Yakuza, they take the effort to include a ton of characters and cutscenes and it just eats into any sense of tension. It makes it feel like Kiryu has all the time in the world, and values the lives of the people who allegedly cares about as much as he cares about toy cars and karaoke. Or sometimes the story just feels like following something else entirely. Maybe this is less of a problem in the other games, but reaching an important plot point then hard cutting to the other playable character, where we barely, if at all, interact with the story I was trying to enjoy, kills my connection to it. The whole story feels like I've got 10 video tabs open, some of them are comedy shorts, some of them are deep dives into serious books, one of them's the news, and I'm randomly switching from one to another. And when the story starts metaphorically doing that, I start literally doing that. I start going "Oh, this feels like an entirely different video to the one I was enjoying. I'm gonna go find something else that's like what I thought I was trying to watch. The story I was listening to apparently ended halfway through." Again, this is nothing against you guys, you're great. I just don't like the material, and with how much I hear people saying they LOVE this franchise, I'm curious if there's something I just don't get? Does anyone else feel the same way as me?

15:53 It is certainly a bit of a critique I have of this game... that it brings up such HORRIBLE past for Makoto's character. And then one of the perpetrators is kinda just... not *quite* given what they deserve. I felt like the game just kinda hand-waved that one away in favour of a misguided, last-dying-breath-redemptive moment

I was legitimately angry about Lee's death. Absolutely one of my favorite characters, I would love to see some backstory for him. Edit: Also, agree with Monty. I love all the content RGG packs into these games, but it does feel like a distraction from the plot, with the thematic juxtaposition, not to mention the ludonarrative dissonance (of which a great many open-world games are guilty) of setting up an imperative, seemingly time-sensitive goal only to let the player take 60+ hours to actually achieve it. Shit's still fun af, though.
