I pretty much came here to write this. No BS, no artificially prolonging the video, just cutting to the chase. I don't really know anything about making music, but I like to listen to various techno genres, and I found this video quite informative. Also interesting how simple things can achieve so much.

Thank you for this! I spent some time studying these today and wanted to share my notes for those interested. Here are the 17 patterns (two are part of the Melodic Progression) in chronological order: 1. Dramatic Build-up Instructions: Take a note, then another, jump to another octave, then repeat. Duplicate the notes and apply automation cuts. This will make your build-up much stronger. 2. Dark Clap with Attack Instructions: Start with a regular clap pattern. Make it darker by adding attack. Switch to a 16th note pattern to create a full off-beat techno clap sequence. 3. Power of Six (Ambience Pattern) Instructions: Take your root key, count to five (1-2-3-4-5), then play the sixth note, come back to the fifth, and loop it. This creates a looping pattern using the "power of six." 4. Rolling Bassline Instructions: Start with the root note, duplicate it once, then duplicate it again. Loop the pattern and sidechain it to the kick. At some moments, apply cutoff automation for variation. This is a common rolling techno bassline. 5. Offbeat Bass Instructions: If the rolling bassline has too many notes, simplify it by removing beats and making it bigger. You now have an offbeat bass. 6. Groovy Jump Bass Instructions: Start with a root note, add a second one, and then jump to another note. Repeat the jumps, extend the notes, and loop it. Make sure to sidechain the kick for groove. 7. Extended Groovy Loop Instructions: To make the jump bass even groovier, extend the pattern, and loop it for more repetition. 8. 16th Note Hi-hat Instructions: Take a single note for the hi-hat, then duplicate it 16 times to create a continuous 16th-note pattern. Play with the velocities, add groove, and randomize fading for a more dynamic sound. 9. Off-hat Variation Instructions: This is an off-beat hi-hat pattern. It's boring on its own, so add accents or extra layers around the off-beat to make it more exciting. 10. Triplet Hi-hat Instructions: If you enjoy triplets, alter the previous 16th-note hi-hat pattern into triplet timing for a more rhythmic variation. 11. Evil Spirits Ride Instructions: Start with a ride cymbal. Utilize the power of semitone movements to create a haunting, "evil" atmosphere. This works especially well in darker techno tracks. 12. Rumble Bass Pattern Instructions: Take a kick drum and route it to a secondary channel with heavy effects. Resample the output, take one part and place it on the last quarter of a bar, legato it slightly, and then add another transient on the offbeat. Extend the transition and polish the sound for a rumbling bass effect. 13. Melancholic Ambience Instructions: Take a simple pattern, starting with the root C minor chord, and add a fifth note in the same minor chord. Duplicate it and move one note up by a semitone for a melancholic sound. 14. Melodic Progression (641) Instructions: Start by counting to six (1-2-3-4-5-6) and create a triad. Then, count to four and create another triad. Put your root key back in the sequence. This is the "641" chord progression, commonly used in techno. 15. Voice Layering Instructions: Once you've created your 641 progression, add vocal layers to enhance the drama and emotion in the melody. 16. Singular Drama Pattern Instructions: To create drama and intensity, duplicate your previous melodic pattern. Add a single note to extend or emphasize a dramatic resolution. 17. Resolution Pattern Instructions: Sometimes you need a resolving melodic pattern that feels like a "return home." This is often done by creating descending note sequences to release the tension in the track.
