Danny, sure it is a fantastic song and inspirational performance. And it is Bulgarian, no question about that. This Vardar Macedonia territory, heavily populated by Bulgarians, was given to Serbia in 1918. For over 100 years, we now have a different "identity" of locals. The song, however, it is older than that. As a Bulgarian who loves Macedonian folk songs, I can assure you it is a Bulgarian song. We are the same people who have been split for all the wrong reasons by the Balkan's trouble makers (Serbia). Here you are! Listen to "Болен мi лежи Миле ПопЙoрданов".

True, yet I haven't up to this moment got any material about a possible Slavic origin of Alexander; as far as I know, his armor plate had the carving of a Medusa, a symbology only understood fully by some ophidian cults which some mediterranean peoples shared in secrecy... culturally Macedonians were more directed towards the Dorians... as far as I know...
@skadivar16 жыл бұрын
and as this warriorlike culture is as admirable as were the Celts, the Norse, the Thracians (other forefathers to the Bulgarians that invented the Bastarnae, a sword that for me is only comparable to the Iberian Falx or the Japanese Katana) the Arabs or the Macedonians, you cannot call "barbarian" (a materialistic, anti-cultural term itself) a people that creates a music so wonderful and deep, so overwhelmingly charged with feeling yet so technically complex! You know what I mean...

Here's a link to the lyrics AND translation AND sheet music AND chords (and a link to a pronunciation guide): www.travellersunion.org/music/stoMi.html Listen carefully to the song for pronunciation, as well...for instance where the lyric sheet writes "Sto" it's pronounced more like "Shto" (as the Yale gals wrote it). There's one of those little diacritical marks over the "S", but they left that out in the lyric sheet.

So be careful about your vision of history, try not to be simplistic nor materialistic, try to just appreciate good art from wherever it comes! I live in Brazil, my whole family is from southern France, and since early age I was always been attracted irrationally towards Bulgarian culture, in particular the female choirs; Frithjof Schuon must have been listening to one of those songs when he wrote that Mathematical Rigor and Musical Harmony were the constituent threads of the Divine itself!

Just a comment to the Macedonian guy... though I understand your concern about your culture, you make basic mistakes; that the bulgarians came from an ancient tribe in eastern russia it does not mean they are mongoloids, the spatial distribution of peoples is not so linear as official history claims; for instance, Sturlusson states that Ásaland, the tribe guided by Odin and the Drotnar, forefathers of the varangians, norse and danes,, was in the same "turkish" region of central asia; (cont.)

Before that Macedonia was inhabited by Bulgarians and Greeks. Check the Miladinov Brothers' collection of Bulgarian folk songs in Macedonia.

@makkiwi Struga was part of Bulgaria for a long time, too. The language in this song is neither standard Macedonian nor standard Bulgarian. I agree that the caption of this video ("Bulgarian genius") really isn't correct, but only because you can't tell whether it's truly Macedonian or Bulgarian. Either way, it's beautiful, and both Bulgarians and Macedonians should be equally proud that they have such beautiful languages and songs.
