Yamaha 30hp CV two stroke

Here I test a 30hp Yamaha CV two stroke outboard on a 13ft aluminium boat with two people on board.
I have found these motors to have good torque. They do seem to chug and run a bit rough if your trying to travel along under 2500rpm which has been the case with all the 25cv and 30cv motors I have tested, it’s not an issue really.

I agree. My mate had a Yammy 30 triple on a 4.2 wide body Dory and it was great. So smooth for a 2 stroke.

My grandfather used to have a Yamaha 50hp triple on his 4.7m boat. It was way fast, he reckons at least 30 knots flat out. Three cylinders is sort of a magic number for 2 strokes, if you set up a 2 stroke triple right you can arrange for the blowdown pressure from one cylinder to shove lost charge back into another just before the exhaust port closes. Kind of like what the reflected pressure wave in a tuned pipe does, but it works across a wider RPM range.

I had a 30CV (customer value stands for) 2017 model. Was rev limited to 5700rpm. Use to get 47km/h on a Quintrex Dory. Was a good motor but didn’t like going slow then hard accelerating. Yam said it’s the design issue of a single carb twin cylinder.

Hi mate, Yeah this one hits limiter too, it’s got a 11p prop at the moment and I suggested to the owner to try a 13p. It’s actually not a design issue with a twin cylinder single carb as there are many outboard motors that run like Swiss clocks that are twin cylinder single carb. I feel it’s a tuning issue from factory, the 25 -30hp Johnson does the same thing along with some of the old omc twins do it too. In saying that, so many twin outboards with one carb run so smoothly throughout the whole rev range. It’s really not an issue unless you want to trawl at slow speeds. Cheers Aussie Boat Guy 😎

Ive got 2x25's 25elhs and 25elrs got some chris carson marine "sportsman reeds" for the 25elrs to raise the wot rpm to 6500 figured it was a good starting point...got and suggestions to get more power out of the 25elrs? To save ya looking up the models theyre both long shaft 1994 25hp yamahas the 25elhs is supossed to be tiller control but is modified to run remote controls and the 25elrs is set-up to run remote from factory. The 25elhs is on my 16" aluminum runabout year:1977 manufacturer:Spingbok model: Rocket III boat has a 15" transom so had to raise motor up 5" to run the 20" leg. Im getting speeds between 38km-45km depending on boat weight load(passenger, or by myself, fuel etc. Plan is whenever the 25elhs eventually neeeds a rebuild i can then swap to the 25elrs with some mods done to it to go a bit faster...then while thats being used i can send in the powerhead for the 25elhs to get rebuild so that way i can keep a a pair of 2 strokes alve as long as possible.

Dude, here in Ireland (EU) they've stopped selling 2-stroke outboards.. some manufacturers even stopped making them. I love them for the reliability and simplicity of the engine, they are way more fun and also very light engines. I will have to source some either from adverts in Germany or on ebay

Hi mate, That’s basically the same motor and owned one plus worked on them before. Sounds like you have some junk in your carburetor. I would do a carb overhaul, flush my fuel lines clean my fuel filter etc. Normally what your explaining is due to blockage in the low speed jet in the carburetor. so have you ever modified a triple cilinder yamaha 30 ? i have one currently in my workshop to be overhauled and create one of those tinnies. was wondering if you 'ld be wiling to share some guidelines to. spice it up a little... i know you guys run these tinnies down little creeks or billabongs with highly tuned yammies, but it is kind of a big secret what you actually do to make em perform so well...

Hi mate, I have not personally tuned a triple 30hp Yamaha but a lot of my acquaintances have. You can do a lot to get more power out of them. people run the 40hp Tohatsu carbs, change the exhaust tuner, porting, finger porting, high compression head etc etc. I would join the tinny racing forum and see what info you can get. cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

How’s this one compare to a tohatsu 30? And what would you rather have a triple 30hp yammy or a tohatsu 30?

Hi mate, I do prefer the tohatsu 30hp, don’t know why, the Tohatsu is smoother and I have built so many Tohatsu I guess. I would prefer the yam triple than the Tohatsu 30 because of smoothness, sound and torque over the Tohatsu Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy

HI mate i have a cv 30 on my stacer 409.stryker it had 12 , pitch on it i put a 11. 1/ 4 on seems to struggle at top speed about 37kmh 2 blokes and gear do you think going back to the 12 would beter top speed

Hi Mate, The CV 30 should be able to spin the 12 pitch with that setup. We just changed my brothers from A 11p to a 13p because it was hitting the rev limiter. is your motor on the limiter at full throttle? you will hear it slightly missing. cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

@@25hpboatracerman thanks for the reply mate no it doesn't miss but sounds like it wants to go a bit harder when I got the boat new the motor at the time was sitting flush on the transom and was mounted crooked and the original prop was a 12 and wouldn't even get up on a plane this why I went down to a 11 .1/4 but I've since had it lifted and was wondering to buy a 12 and put it back on mate now I've got to pull carby of and unlock the jets plugs do an impeller first issues I've had since I brought it 8 years ago it does about 37 kmh with 2 blokes in it but seems to struggle sorry about the long message mate

you really need to listen for the miss at full throttle, my brother could not even hear it, the tiller has a slight shake too at full throttle. I would definitely try some other props if you get the chance
