I sold Yamaha amp years ago when the yamaha introduced the loudness control, it was introduced to enhance bass naturally. All other amps would have a "loudness" button you would press at low volume to bump up the bass (a bass boost). So Yamaha came up with the idea of rolling off the mids and highs instead. Its work like this, you crank up the volume and get a nice bass tone going and then you use the loudness control to roll back the mids and highs thus bringing down the amp to a lower listen level but allowing the amp to drive the bass with full current going to it, thus no artificial boost but yet a strong bass response. Its quite a brilliant idea and works well when you understand what it does and how to teak it. It's great with klipsch speakers that can be a bit forward in it projection of sound. The loudness control helps tame that. This also help with speakers that have low bass output because you drive a lot of current to the bass.

Joe, you can do anything! It's all good. As for Zeos, the guy has turned unboxings into a freaking sitcom. It's not for everyone, lol! I have an older Yamaha AX-497. A predecessor, no DAC or sub-out, etc. But, contrary to Yamaha's claims, the internal amp architecture seems to be the same: symmetrical and 85 watts by 2 @ 8 Ohms. Yes, it has a tape loop and the phono pre-amp., etc. I agree with Gene. I've run it @ 8 Ohms with 4 Ohm speakers. It's a decent but not great amp. Definitely good for the money. I got mine closeout for $200! At $500 there is a lot of competition. And the Yamaha can get a little bright with some speakers, especially those that pair better with an older NAD integrated. The NAD has more headroom. However, if you have a darker, warmer speaker, the Yammie may wake it up some.
@joentell4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I don't know if the sitcom comment is good or bad. I rarely watch unboxings because I open so many boxes already, I don't need to watch someone else do it. 😂😂😂

@@joentell I was just giving Zeos some ShxT! I've been subscribed to his channel from the beginning and I never thought he would grow to his current levels! I also tire of some of his Shtick, now and then, but, I'm happy he's found a niche. I could do without the endless headphone reviews, though. But, then again, for some, that is their primary listening mode. I prefer speakers. But, I do have some HPs in the fold. Look forward to your review, Joe. I'm curious as to what you will think of this amp.

I have a shitty circa 2010 Denon AVR. If Audyssey is enabled, the equalizer, tone, bass, treble controls are all disabled. If you turn off Audyssey, all those settings are buried in clunky ass menus. While I might like a *bit* more control than this Yamaha amp provides, I do appreciate something that's more focused on removing all the clutter between you and the sound.

For those that do not know: REC = Preout = Preamp Out. Think of these terms as referencing an internal *splitter* for the sound, not that dissimilar from a cable splitter; that thing that takes your tv cable from the wall and allows you to connect 2 cables. Take a signal (in this case the signal being fed into the Yamaha) and pre-amplify (boost) it, then *split* that signal into 2 (or 3, or 4...) and output it through the RCA outputs marked REC (or PreOut or Preamp Out). The user can now use that REC signal and feed it into a component which is designed to use or modify that output signal. Some people use this output for subwoofers (yep...they sure do). A modern computer can use this output as a *signal in* and record said signal in whatever format they choose. I hope this explanation gave some of you an idea as to the intended uses for these outputs. Good luck, enjoy the video, and always strive to be Hi-Fi in your life. :)

Tape recorder in and out I believe is where this comes from. I have a version of this amp with tuner and BT. High quality and sounds great with my vintage Koss speakers. Also have hooked up a tape deck. Works great! Best regards, Brian.
@joentell4 жыл бұрын
I guess my question is if I can use it like the old tape monitor functions where I use the output to go to an external EQ for example, then output that back into the amp. A tape monitor would allow you to use an EQ regardless of which input source you're using.
@ppmnox4 жыл бұрын
@@joentell PB is the return signal. Thus, you would run the REC signal to a source and then *through* your EQ and then return through PB. However, those inputs/outputs are specifically for that input line on the dial. So you could EQ the signal coming from a tape deck or cd player (just as you could on ANY input line *before* the inputs on the back of the integrated amp) and listen that way. However, you can't EQ this integrated amp for all signal inputs without some funky outboard input/output switch.

Will be using as a PC audio setup and ive been having a heck of a time finding something that i like. not having 6000 sets of rca cables would be amazing but im not holding my breath.

Yup the 801 is great had it running for a week straight lol to "break in" Dont even have to use the tone controls because it sounds perfect as is which is something i have never experienced before regardless of any DAC i use sounds perfect. The internal USB DAC is good also. Seems like Yamaha knows what they are doing and have restored my faith in them after using a surround receiver for 2 channel that just never sounded right stupid dsp and room correction i just dont need all that crap on my rig and it never sounded right. Yeah the silver is awesome. I have went through countless PC setups and the 801 has been the best PC "audiophile" solution for me good power good dac no long rca cables all over no hiss just great. Also no freaking channel imbalance drove me crazy...YMMV

Joey! That’s my Amp! I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about it in your critical review..Good, bad, etc..it all good. Just want to learn how to get the best out of it. I actually already learned something. I had mine set to 4 ohms to pair with my 4 ohms Elac UB5’s, so should I set it 8 ohms? Also, the UB5 with as501 is a pretty bright combination. Any thoughts on how to make it warmer? I’ve already been playing around with the loudness control, which is working. But wondering what else I could do possible. Thanks!
@noodlesfam4 жыл бұрын
Actually, now that I think about it. Maybe setting the amp to 8 ohms, may help with brightness issue. Btw- Good Job on the unboxing, love you dry dad humor..lol.
@joentell4 жыл бұрын
You will see in my review of the ELAC Debut Reference, I compare them to the UB5's, and the bass response on the UB5's is highly dependent on placement. I think this amp is pretty neutral sounding. Don't be afraid to move your speakers closer/further from the walls. Near the wall is more bass, but perhaps worse imaging/sound stage. Also, that's what the bass and treble tone controls are there for. Use those to get the sound you desire. The room and placement affect the sound so much, you need to use those unless you start getting into room treatment.

You should check out my reviews of some Class D amps like the SMSL AD18, SMSL SA300, and Dayton Audio DTA 2.1. Class D amps are much more efficient. Some less expensive amps (regardless of type) aren't as good, but it is possible to get a good small class D amp.
