After a lot of refresh on the 1996 yamaha banshee we came across very low compression on the engine. Right before I started to tear apart the motor I found a simple mistake!

Great video! But just one correction, the R in the spark plug number stands for resistor, not restricted; they add a resistor in there, between the cable end and the center electrode under the ceramic insulator. It's to deal with modern electronics in vehicles where the extra hot, unfiltered spark can cause signal noise or electrical interference that'll wreak havoc with some sensitive ECUs and stuff like that (like how on older cars with a hot racing ignition setup will produce popping sounds over the radio or nearby walkie talkies! 🤣) Of course, most bikes that run a simple CDI setup won't suffer from that problem, so definitely run the non-resistor plugs in your banshee, may even be a good choice on some of those scoots in your collection! You should only run a resistor plug if the manufacturer tells you, or you have an actual ECU in the vehicle. Oh, almost forgot, some plug wires (not many, like the old Splitfire plug wires) have resistors in them too, so just be sure to run a normal racing plug wire, like an NGK or Taylor plug wire, otherwise you get the same problem you would with a resistor plug. My Brother taught me about this years ago when I asked why he didn't run "R" plugs in his drag car, he just runs plain-jane copper electrode plug or E3 plugs with no resistor. No sensitive electronics, and he changed out the plugs frequently. Simple as.

You got that right! The resistor in spark plugs is designed to minimize radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) that can affect electronic components in the vehicle. It prevents these interferences from disrupting the operation of sensitive electronic systems, such as the car's radio or onboard computer. Spark plugs with resistors are often denoted with an "R" in their part number or heat range designation.

Cmonnn the mopboyz! Got a 80cc Gilera runner, 14.5hp at the rear wheel over here in Manchester uk, never would have started tuning mopeds if it wasn’t for finding your channel early this year! One day we will make it to vegas for a ride out hahaha

A long compression tester hose does not make it inaccurate. It just makes it take more kicks to get a proper reading. Also, compression is lower on a warm engine, not higher.

Every machine is different but you could fry the cdi/ ecu running a non-resistor in a bike that calls for it.

Any idea what caused the problem? Get a Polini 70cc Corsa which is a cast iron. Optimize the cooling and carburetor setting for cooling and lubrication. Get Motul scooter power or Amsoil Interceptor.

@@laurapalmerTDGE i haven't even taken it off yet mate but I believe it was my own fault turning the carb to lean, the engine in my bike has been in 3 bikes though and is a few years old, going to take it off a d insect it tomorrow, as it didn't seize it just cut out, kickstart still free just back fires and won't start now

@@pk93cov - Check the fuel line, buy a new spark plug too. If the cylinder is ok buy a new piston and rings. Or if you have budget get a Corsa or MHR replica cast iron. As you mentioned too, spend attention to the jetting. Not an easy task but ... . Good luck with the analysis. Cheers.
