Got the DGX660 and I love the sound and action. I mainly use it as a normal piano and the sound of the grand is still better than any other I have heard on any below $1200. I also has a lot of other fun functions that you may or may not want to use. I just watched the demo to hear what Stu says about it. Fantastic review, by the way, from a fantastic piano player (loved the accordeon demo!).

I am surprised reviewers do not make more of a big deal about the fact that you simply transfer your recording onto a pen/stick which provides a PERFECT recording for you to download onto your PC and simply burn to disc. No expensive microphones or soundproofed recording studios are required. You can play your recording on any CD player and it sounds like a truly professional recording . This instrument is astonishing value for money.

Great review! This keyboard was the most fun instrument I’ve owned. I tend to play heavy banging away and unfortunately the white and black key pads wore down a little after about four years, they started to make louder thumps and clicks when playing. I guess the rubber or felt pads compress and got worn out. I do recommend this keyboard for the live recorded drum patterns, microphone settings, ease of use, the fast dial wheel, large screen and speakers.

Absolutely! Yes, the GHS action isn't their most durable, I wore out two full actions myself a few years back...but the instrument's combo of musical features is fantastic, you're right!.

Great demo! I love this piano.I’ve had it for a couple of years and am re-learning after a 40 year absence.I use the ‘lesson’ feature and also really enjoy the different voices when I have to practice the same piece or technical exercise a gazillion times. This piano is always fun and really helps a person enjoy their music fully.

Just ordered this piano to start learning to play it, and because already took the plunge and paid for it I WILL learn how to play it! The review video is good but I feel it takes quite some time to actually get to the point, kind of lacks comparison vs a true acoustic piano, is the digital one feeling equal or similar? You did mention the weight which is great I wanted weighted keys myself. Keep the reviews coming.!

Great review Stu. I think the 3 pedal unit is an optional extra. As a hobbyist I have a DGX-660 and love it. It also has MIDI in & out via USB so you can hook it up to a computer and control a DAW or download / play other MIDI tracks through it.

I've had a DGX-660 for years (it was a gift from my husband), and now that my 6-year-old son has started learning piano, I'd like to buy a Roland for him. I've heard that Roland keyboards offer a touch closer to that of a real piano. I'm considering the Roland F701. Can you tell me if it would be an upgrade from the DGX-660, or are they similar in level? Additionally, do you have any recommendations for other models that might be better suited for us?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 8 ай бұрын
Hi! Brent here! That is awesome to hear that your son has also taken up the piano! The Roland PHA4 action that is featured on the F701 is fantastic. In my opinion, it will be an upgrade from the DGX660 in terms of authenticity of touch. With that said, you may find models like the HP704 and DP603 from Roland to be a more substantial upgrade, as it has the higher end PHA50 action. :)

I wonder if you can review the DGX670? The CFX sound blew me away today at the store... the keyboard action felt a little bit better than P125 although they are both GHS... How it sounds compared to VST, I am not sure... but I think one disadvantage is the VST, we can use it in DAW... I think there is no way to use the DGX-670 as a sound server so that we can send MIDI signal to it and have it generate the sound back to the computer... unless... if we somehow hack it by doing it separately by using a MIDI file and then recording the sound using the USB drive or an audio interface, and then import it back to the DAW

@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Juan - The DGX660 is an awesome combo of features for beginner or intermediate players, or for performers who already have an established technique. For an advanced classical player or serious student in this price range, I'd be looking at something other than the GHS action from Yamaha - Unfortunately you can't access the RH3 Kawai action at that price, but you can get the RHCII action, which is in the KDP110, or on Roland, I'd take a serious look at the RP102, which has the PHA-4 action. Both of those actions to me are the best for higher-level players when we're looking at the $1000 USD range. -stu

its all about how you will use the keyboard in practical. there are many models only for piano performing, will give better touch of piano than dgx660. BUT this is because dgx is a 2 ways keyboard that fit both live performing and music recording/mixing, not just pretend to be a piano. If you only want to play classical piano on keyboard, dont go for dgx660. If you are a music player that need much more features and functions, you have to choose dgx660 instead of other "piano only" model

It is a very different offering to be honest. The DGX models are "arranger" pianos, which means that they have a plethora of onboard accompaniment features and options. The P series instruments are designed to be used primarily for piano practice/performance. With that said, given how feature rich the DGX660 and DGX670 are, I would personally rate them as being more premium instruments than the P225.

@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the kind words and for tuning in! We appreciate it. There are some very simple and intuitive DAWs out there (FL Studio, Cubase, Ableton, GarageBand, etc.). That would actually be my personal top suggestion. While there is a slight learning curve involved with any new piece of software, it will be an incredibly handy skill to learn. Furthermore, it will give you lots of creative flexibility in terms of layering multiple tracks/sounds, editing audio and improving the overall sonic representation of your music/playing through mixing-related plug-ins. The other advantage of using DAWs is that most of them will have the ability to export as MP3 files. So, all-in-all, with a little bit of a learning curve to deal with, you will be fully equipped to tackle everything you seek to do. There are a number of wonderful tutorials on KZbin for each of the DAWs that I have listed. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

I also just watched Jeremy See's new demo and review of the Korg XE20, and was also a bit disappointed in the XE20. Four things stood out for me in my comparison of the two keyboards. 1. The DGX-660 has a pitch bend wheel, but the XE20 doesn't (or a joystick either). 2. The DGX-660 can record audio .wav files directly into USB stick in the instrument, but as far as I know, the XE20 is not able to do that. 3. Much higher polyphony with the DGX-660. 4. For me, the DGX-660 is going to be much easier to navigate right out of the box.

@@jenk264 The action is okay. It's only a bit loud when you use headphones if you play at "Hard" touch settings. You should play it in-store before deciding.

The worst thing about this piano is the music stand. It is like 2 feet away from, maybe more. It sucks when you have to turn music. Sucks! And after listening with earbuds, you can actually hear the keys hitting against the base of the keyboard. That is not good at all. Cheaply made, to say the least.

I've moved mine very well, I have a Gator case with wheels on it, I play 4 -6 gigs a month without issue. I use a quick lock stand, and a Roland KC300 stereo mixing amp with it, no problem.

@2020 A.D. i have mine on wheels, that makes the stand easy to move. The keyboard is too awkward to be moved alone. It requires assistance, be it a person or mechanical.

I moved it by myself and I'm a lady. It is heavy, but I manage to put it in its carry bag and place it on a dolly upright then, Just roll it in/out. Stand upright and lift on end into back of my nissan rogue. I hate doing it, but have to when no man is around. Lol

Oh no !!!!!!!!!!!!! Dude you should have connected the volume to the camera so we could hear the direct sound from the piano to the camera. Instead we hear the piano speakers going into a microphone/s and then from the microphone probably into a mixer or audio interface. Why do that when we want to hear the actual piano crispness. I'm sure you did that so that we can hear your voice mixed into the video. But, we want to hear the piano sounds, not your voice. LOL !!!

I would have to double check with Stu and our production team, but I believe they are taking the audio output directly from the line out of the piano. The only time you are hearing the sound of the piano from the speakers through either overhead microphones or Stu's microphone is when the onboard speakers are specifically being showcased or when Stu is speaking while playing (naturally, at that moment, there will be a bit of bleed from into his microphone). Thanks for tuning in and all the best! :)
