Yamaha e473 "Second Thoughts"

Here are my impressions after a few days with my new Yamaha e473. I talk about what I was disappointed about and what makes me want to keep it. BTW, I will definitely NOT be keeping it!

You said you don’t play piano then go on to say the Yamaha keyboard has problems. None of those problems exist if you know how to play it. The sustain pedal can be purchased separately, then your problem with that function is gone. It has 4 key sensitivity options, get to know it, you need more informed answers before judging the keyboard.

Hi my friend, the damper pedal is also called the sustain pedal (which is the most commonly used pedal of a piano) and you can connect one to the E473. My PSR S model, it takes a couple of seconds before booting too. That's normal considering there is a hard drive inside the keyboard. But it makes a sound that lets you know that is ready. Even our computers with an SSD drive will take much longer to enter Windows.

Thanks for the info about the damper/sustain pedal. So these are the same thing? Strange when their conventional definitions seem to be almost exact opposites. Yes, I understand why the newer devices need boot up time. I was just pining for the good old days when keyboards, TVs, etc. turned on at the flick of a switch and in the blink of an eye. However, I DON'T miss loading my computer programs off of a cassette. Those were definitely the bad old days.

A Piano has three pedals , left to right: damper, sostenuto, sustain. Su damper and sustain are different things. The damper shifts the piano mechanics to the Side and softens the tone. I own the e473 and p125, which comes with all the pedals butont the p125 the damper doesn’t change the tone dramatically. Sostenuto its sustain only for pressed keys. The e473 definitely diese not have a damper function.

How much that model PSR E 473

Arpeggio is available for al the voices but you are using voices that have the Arpeggio programmed from the factory. But as long that I have these keyboards from 403 till model 423 the arpeggio's where available for every tone..even drumkits. And since model E423 it's even possible to set the Arpeggio to Left or Melody parts. Is it such a problem just to be patient for a second or 2?, it's booting because it want to know if you have a USB stick or a PC on his USB port connected to the device. I'm thinking you have the wrong model and the EW range is a better choice for you. Damper pedal is a function that is not listed for a keyboard like this model. A sustain pedal can also assigned to other functions other then Sustain. But not for damper function but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe reading the manual on this keyboard could be a good idea because you are saying things about it that's not correct. The EW series has flatter speakers so they sound thinner then on the PSR E models. But they are at keybed point not much better then this PSR-E473, only longer and having more keys. If you think that this keybed is nothing much, play on a 403 model and you will be more dissapointed. I hope that you will come to a right choice of keyboard/piano for you but the PSR-E line is not bad. Yamaha has put this E-473 on the market faster then planned originally because a lot of musical instrument shop are dumping the 463 models as fast as needed and sometimes for a very low price. Reason for that was the new Casio CT-S500 en CT-S1000 keyboards that are sounding pretty good and giving much more then Yamaha is offering even with this E473 model. Like a Modulation knob...a thing Yamaha is still after 17 years of producing this line of keyboards still doesn't offer. And these 2 Casio models are in this price range of keyboards where the PSR-E473 is up against.

I ended up figuring out the arpeggiator voices thing but thanks for your reply anyways. The information you provided was useful. I exchanged the e473 for the e463 because of the more extensive sampling features that it offers. I also bought the Yamaha PSS-A50 which has an arpeggiator and which, if it had a sampler, would be an awesome piece of gear. I agree that Casio definitely offers some features that Yamaha really should take note of. I have an old Casio CTK-651 that has served me well for many years but it doesn´t have sampling or an arpeggiator, two things that I really want to experiment more with separately and combined.

@@SHTMusik You maybe consider the Casio CT-S500 or 1000, that has a chromatic sampler and comes with Bluetooth adapter. The Yamaha only uses the pads for the sampling function, I'm using a software sampler within Cubase Elements 10 and that is really a good sampler with just the things that you need to create new samples. I using a lot of samples in my music. So I know what your looking for...

You're not going to get around the boot up time with similar keyboards. My Casio CT-S190 is VASTLY simpler and does not boot instantly. The Casio CT-S1000V has a mic sampler and can play a pitched sample like the SK-5. You won't get everything you want in a single keyboard for less than $1000. The $400 to $1000 price range is essentially the category between toys and professional keyboards. This price range is essentially high end consumer or low end professional. They all have many good features but missing one or two features you wanted. The competitor's keyboard has the missing features, but misses something else. Repeat again for the 3rd competitor.

My 473 has a defective screen. Barely used but out of warranty. Don’t buy one. This one was a replacement for another defective Yamaha keyboard.

If all else fails...read instructions! Before reviewing a product, it's probably wise to read the manual FIRST! "By connecting a footswitch (FC5 or FC4A, sold sepa- rately) to the [SUSTAIN] jack, you can control three functions: Sustain, Articulation (page 27), and Arpeggio (page 26)."

Honestly, I've paid for keyboards that cost 5 times over the years. I will admit that the built in songs annoy the shit out of me. Remove those and this is damn near a professional keyboard for this price. Many years ago, like 20. I used a PSR on my CD. Second to my Korg. Sounded that good straight off the rack at a consumer store. Spent a hundred bucks. The string sounds were amazing. I'm not sorry I purchased this. I wish they'd remove the "Groove" function". Its silly and unprofessional. Other than that. This an amazing professional keyboard for the money.

.. either stick to playing around with your kiddie sampler if you're amused by stupid naff noises - or go take some proper piano lessons and learn to play like everyone else who appreciates real music. A complex keyboard will simply show you up for what you can't do except push a few sound effects buttons - learning scales, arpeggios and chords and melodies takes months and years.
