Great video! I really enjoy the EAD10 for practice and small gigs where I don't have someone running sound for the band. FYI, you can adjust the headphone volume independently of the master outs, it's under UTILITY/GENERAL L&R Volume : External Device Output Volume. Check the EAD10 reference manual. Brilliant & comprehensive review. I am really considering an EAD10 for live use, initially just to provide a feed for foldback so I can hear a full mix of the band with in-ears. However, the idea of reinforcing the sound out the speakers is also appealing. It certainly seems to be a much simpler route than setting up microphones.

Great video Ryan! Thanks for sharing your insights. I liked how you highlighted pros and cons of the sensor and the module, it was something that promo videos would not do. I currently have a small 3 piece kit (bd, tt, ft) with 16” bd. It’ll be interesting to see how it copes with a 16” kick. Having said that I’d be considering a full set of DT triggers to go with it as I would also like to use it for practicing with mesh heads and L80s. Hope I’d be able to share some of my experience soon.

From what I understand, this wasn’t made with live playing in mind. So it makes sense that volume up/down would be chained, because it’s designed for the drummer who’s playing. Now that so many drummers use it live because of control/consistency (never know what the mic situation is at any given venue) they may address this with future models.

Hi sorry to hassle you just wanted to see if you could help since I could not find 1 video showing how to play along to music. I've an Apple ipod nano which has mp3 music and also an mp3 stick which also has mp3 songs. What do you do to play the ipod or mp3 stick with your favourite scenes ? Should the nano be plugged into 'aux in' and what about the mp3 stick ? Do I need to go to the menu & press a certain button or 2 , just not sure.Ive had it for 3 weeks so a newbie. Hi guys , indeed nice and detailed review , I want to ask if any one of you add and use a full tigers .I am a bit confusing that Ryan at one point did highlight in the video that you can add four triggers ( also on the input of main one ???) for the Kick drum ? are we do have the stereo mic for the kick drum ? if is like that that mean you can play live with the band not to be affected by the mic? if you add another one ? If you used the triggers only including the one on the EAD microphone you would get no sound from the rest of the band but if you wish to use the microphones it will pick up the rest of the band. In my experience it wasn't much but it depends on how loud the rest of the band are compared to you. Hope that helps.

It would work if you use two triggers but I’m not sure how effective the mics would be on a bigger kit like that.

I have had some crackling occasionally from the jack leads that plug into the ead sensor. Normally rotating them around slightly fixed it for me. Thanks for the kind words.

Hi Ryan and thanks for the review. I ran into something today with my EAD10 and hoping you can help. I was using the Rec'N'Share app on a demo song (that I must record tomorrow) and it's a halftime shuffle. The default metronome in the app is eighth notes and the only adjustment I see is to change from on the beat to off the beat accent. What I really need in this case is triplets ... preferably 16th note triplets. Can you offer any advice? Many thanks for your time.

Yep you certainly can, it sounds great if you use compression on the EAD, adds some great punch to the kick and snare blended in amongst other mics.

If I understand correctly, the system is engineered to rely on the device being clipped to the (rim of the) kick drum, yes? In addition to the two microphones behaving as microphones, the device somehow senses and mixes the vibrations felt from kick-to-device, yes? To put this another way, if you mounted this thing on a mic or cymbal stand somehow, the resulting sound (of the kick, if nothing else) is different, yes?

Mike Barker Yeah exactly to get the best performance out of it the ead should be mounted on the bass drum rim. The sensor also acts as a trigger so you will lose that facility if it's not on the hoop. I've seen snare drum solos recorded with the sensor placed on a table so You could experiment. You will capture a drum kit best if it's mounted on the bass drum rim. Hope that helps.

Ya see how ya hardly hear his crashes, but the splashes sounded fine. The closer the mic is the louder. This could be a great help for practicing dynamics, but if you want to do a fairly difficult drum cover, it’s a challenge. When using rec n share with IOP, the click rarely works on older tunes, but works fine for Android. A full set of triggers doubles the cost of the EAD

It if it’s the only drum mics you’re using it would probably be better for a demo . Long term microphones and interface might be a better choice for releasing music.

Could you rub a Roland on the bass as a external trigger for live? Metal drummer here, I really want this module because if all the features but I also want a trigger set up for those 220bpm bass runs, do you think is it possible to add that external or for example foot blaster with a connection on each pedal could you send those through the tom trigger imput but just change them all to be the same bass sample?

You can certainly add a Yamaha trigger to the kick and set that to a bass drum sample!

Glad you enjoyed it Mario. I believe mac and android are not great for communicating with one another. One option would be uploading the video to something like dropbox on your phone and then downloading it from dropbox onto the macbook. You may need to check what video format your phone shoots in and whether mac will play that format also.

There's only two microphones in the sensor for the whole kit! You get a lot of bass drum punch with it being positioned on top of the bass drum hoop.

It’s line level you only 2 1/4 inch cables to go into the pa mixer. If you prefer mono only the one cable.

So far I’m finding you can’t separate the drum volume from the music volume on the app, as this guy addressed. I know you can mix it after the fact, but it would be so much easier if there were 2 separate volume controls. I’ve tried running it through my board, but no luck. Am I missing something? It’s definitely a huge design flaw. It’s still a really cool device, and there are a ton of things ya can do with it, but I should be much easier.

Michael Molina I haven’t actually but I would avoid heavy compression or distortion. It depends on how loud the band are also but I haven’t had any issues personally.

Ian Mc Namara they definitely do! The room comparison clips are the sound of the mics alone, I didn’t use the triggering all that much.

How necessary is it to use In-ears when using this live in small/medium rooms? I was thinking of just plugging headphones directly into this unit and turning it down enough to hear everything else through the floor wedge. Reason being I dont want to worry about having to deal with a seperate personal mixer or headphone amp

Jim C Unfortunately the ead doesn’t have a seperate headphone volume so the signal being sent to the pa might be weak for it to be the correct level in your headphones. I would suggest a small mixer with these unit personally.

The microphones are unlikely to pick both bass drums up evenly. You could use triggers with two bass drums but the microphones are probably not centered in a double bass setup so I. Don’t think it’s suited for a 2 bass drum setup personally.

Hey Ryan, do you know how to send just your kick trigger through L/R and nothing else (nothing that the mic picks up). Sending audio out live has been a nightmare of feedback and awkward mixing. Pretty much every venue I play has decent mics, I literally just want my kick triggered live. The mic is excellent for live monitoring, so I want the mics still picking up audio and sending it to my headphones.

Hi Greg I don't know know a way of splitting the ead mics and the triggers through the outputs. Have you tried going into the volume settings for the mics and see if they could be turned off all together? I must admit for triggering I use a Roland TM 2 at gigs it's easy and reliable.

Ahh just realized you want the mic audio for your own monitoring, I have a feeling that it's not possible. Perhaps you could send the trigger to the desk and get a feed back into a mixer for your own monitoring?

Using the EAD10 Audio LR PA Outputs, the EAD10 Headphones audio signal is cancelled ! If you want Kick trigger on PA system and keeping your EAD10 headphone monitoring, you have to add an extra kick trigger system. ...You could plug in a monitor subgroup general stage signal the from PA system into the EAD10 audio input and mix it on your EAD10 module....Anyway...the EAD10 , as a Hybrid drumming module, wasn't invented for bigger live gig performances...there's only a 1 track output. Roland Vdrum modules with seperate track output ?

With all the samples you can make happen from this device, is that not distracting if you can still hear the real drums in a live setting? I would only ever use this on recording (from hip-hop projects to metal, for my own enjoyment), but wouldn’t want to ‘realise’ there are 2 different sounds going on, if that makes sense. Also, is it possible to remix the kit within the EAD10’s settings, say if the hats or cymbals are too loud?

You can control the gain of the mics and effectively them down and no you can’t remix the levels of individual kit pieces. That depends on the kit setup and the balance of the person playing the kit.

If recording is your focus only probably not. I would suggest an interface and microphones. It can work to demo ideas or record alongside a normal mic setup though.

Hi Ryan, nice review; are the cymbals/ tom etc able to be heard comfortably on a recording you make with this EAd 10? One drawback is that you can’t mix individual channels on this like mic set ups. You mentioned compression to bring out the higher ended sounds but wondering if it gets lost in the lower end and much the compression helps in this regard

Hi Mark cymbals come through well and so do the toms providing the toms are positioned in a typical way. You don’t get the low end from a close mic on each tom. Compression brings out some of the quieter elements but it doesn’t replace the low end close mics can provide.

Are you recording with the recorder inside the ead10? You have to make sure the audio/click knob is up loud to get a decent playback level. Otherwise it might be worth checking your gain levels on the mics are loud enough. Hope that helps.

I think it's a brilliant tool for practice, it is simple to record but it's not a profressional level sound on it's own. It depends on whether you want to get into recording and what outlet you're using the recording for. For social media posts/drum covers etc it's quick and easy but It's not really suitable for recording a song.

Hey Ryan! thanks for the great review! 1 question for you: saw in an amazon review that if you're using a small 4 piece kit or even no toms at all as i use sometimes, means that the ride cymbal will be closer to the mic instead of being far away like if using 2 toms, the ride volume will be too much. what do u think about that? thank alot! Hi Amit thanks for the kind words! Yes you’re right if you like positioning the ride over the bass drum you will get quite a bit of it in the mix. I’ve found with lighter weight rides it’s manageable. The ead is ideally suited for 2 toms over the bass drum and the ride off to one side in my opinion.

Amit Sharon I would imagine so but it does depend on other factors like your balance between all the voices on the kit. I have some clips on my instagram of that setup that might help to give you an idea.

Have been thinking about getting this for a while but my ride would hang over the module and I’m afraid of hearing nothing but the ride. Any experience with this?

I would say it depends on your ride, if it’s lightweight and a jazzier sound you would be ok. Otherwise you will most likely get more ride cymbal than anything else in the mix.

@@thejamman555 yeah, it’s a big one. It’s a 22” heavy ride that I crash on A LOT. I play in a heavy band so unless I move the ride, the EAD10 may not be a viable option for me.

@@thejamman555 I appreciate the feedback. I was about to pull the trigger Saturday morning and took a closer look at my set up after getting to the studio and my ride would be just above the module. Probably wouldn’t even see the module if you were looking straight down from above my kit with where my ride sits. Better to realize this now before dropping $600! Thanks again for the feedback.

I use logic but it will work with any daw, garageband included.

@@PedroBrandaodrums it would be the same process as setting up any interface in logic. I personally plugged it into my focusrite interface then into the computer.

Thanks, very good video and very well explained. I wanted some simple solution for live, however it is too limited for me as I am an audio engineer. For someone who does not understand the EQ, compressor and other tools in a digital mixer, this is a very good, "idiot friendly" solution.

TIGCED it can definitely work in smaller gigs, the bass drum lacks a bit of low end so a bass drum mic might be needed.

The main problem I have is recording live from the desk in rehearsals. The volume in my ears is fine but when I record, the feed from the desk is very low and the drums are far too loud. I've tried putting the desk on full but still no joy.

Are you running the in ears straight out of the EAD? Sounds like the level of the gain would need to be adjusted on the desk.

@@thejamman555 Ye. My in ears are in the headphone jack in the EAD. The desk is going into the aux input on the EAD.

@@FeathersT21 Ahh and you're recording your audio overall from the EAD? I asked someone who helped develop the EAD and he said that the aux in is on a different circuit and therefore is not able to be recorded via usb. Sadly you can only listen to the aux in but not record it :(

I believe the EAD will record MIdi into a DAW via the usb connection, if you're using the trigger dial on the module.

A friend of mine just told me about this. Been checking out some of the videos and I must say it sounds absolutely horrendous. Do yourself a favour and just mic your kit properly. Don't be lazy about it.
