I have an old fg-200 from 1974. never had a case, been thrown in the back of every car, truck, van, 4 wheeler.....to deer camp...stayed in super hot, super cold, got wet...to this day it sounds absolutely fantastic. Yes, over the years in the southern US its neck has bent a little, the action is high with normal acoustic strings, the bridge area has raised a bit....but it's still making music almost 50 years later!

I own a custom guitar shop so I see lots of Yamaha fg700 go through our shop for professional setups and or repairs and I'm honestly of the opinion but this is a very solid very good mid-level guitar it sounds as good as some of the less expensive Martin guitars certainly so good guitar pretty solid holds together has a pretty good tone certainly not a high end guitar but that's not what you're paying for

I just came back from a guitar store where the guy was such an egotistical know-it-all. He didn’t explain even a quarter of what you just did. In fact you’re the only sales person to ever be so comprehensive and deliver pure explanations behind tone. I wish more music sales people would take their cues from this video.

I just got an FG700S via trade. I put a bone saddle and ebony pins in it, set it up how I prefer and after putting some hard hours on it, it opened up extremely well. I also own an FGX3 Red Label, LL16 and a FS720S. The previous owner I suspect hardly played it as it was mint and not a scratch or any fret wear at all. I agree with you about these guitars, for the price point one cannot go wrong. If a person upgraded the tuners, put a K and K mini in it...fully giggable. Also even with the 1 11/16 nut it somehow feels like a 1 3/4 nut which is rare for me as I usually can always tell the difference right away. Neck girth is very good and feels substantial compared to many other entry level guitars. Very good review and I subscribed to your channel. James from Borden, Ontario, Canada.

I've owned an FG700S for nearly ten years. I bought it from a professional session musician along with a crazy multi compartment semi hardshell gig bag for $150.00. I bought a Sigma and a Guild D240e as time went on. As much as I love my Guild because I can plug it into one of my amps (I use Laneys), and Sigma used to be part of Martin, I always find myself using my Yamaha the most. It connects with me unlike the Sigma and the Guild. I love all three, but my FG700S is my all-time favorite.

My FG700S that my parents bought me when I was like 12 is still one of my favorite guitars I've ever played. For a stage guitar I went through a couple used guitars that I didn't care for...and finally bought a new FG830 and had a pickup installed into it. I used to always think I wanted a Martin but I played a D-28 in a music store once and I felt it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. If I ever do spring for an expensive guitar I'll definitely look toward Yamaha's higher end models. I've never played a Yamaha I didn't like.

It would be more helpful to see the FG730 vs FG830 since they both have the rosewood back/sides, thereby reducing the variables to the scalloped bracing. Most importantly, keep the camera and microphone stationary!

@@MintStiles As someone how has directly compared the 800, 820 and 830 it absolutely makes a difference. The 820 has more bass than the 800 and the 830 has more than the 820.
@MintStiles3 жыл бұрын
@@Guncho06 I think you are reading what you want to read. This is a comparison between the 7xx and 8xx, which is related to the scalloped nature of the top bracing effecting the tone, and my comment is regarding the back being not a significant contributor to tone compares to top differences all things equal. But to comment on your observations... x00, x20, x30 will all be made by different people over different production time and location. I think the x30 and x50 are better made probabalt by more senior luthiers, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the top and build quality that is the primary reason for perceived tone. Three is also not exactly a good sample size as there is literally 1/6 chances to come to your conclusion. The back (and sides to even less of a degree) materials mostly reflect the sound. While it does impart "tone," the effects are just blown absolutely out of proportion. Just like an electric guitar, the pickups are the primary reason for the tone.
@Guncho063 жыл бұрын
@@MintStiles No I'm replying to what you literally wrote. You said the back and sides don't make much difference and I'm telling you they do. Have you directly compared them cause I have. As for where they are made and by whom where are you getting that from? I have never read that anywhere.

Thanks for the demo, Chris. I have and play (as a beginner) an FG700S, though I have played and tuned pianos for decades. It sounds to me that that particular 700 seems a bit thin in the mid range with emphasis on the low and high ends. The 800 definitely projects more in the mid range and sounds more balanced.

I have a FG700S, a Sigma, and a Guild D240e. By far my favorite is the FG. I want to add another acoustic to my collection. I was initially thinking about getting the Guild D140. However, the FG850 seems a better way. I always wanted a total mahogany guitar. I know Ibanez has a mahogany, but I highly doubt it would sound even half as decent as the Yamaha. But if it was a FG850 vs the Guild D20, that's a tough decision. All mahogany and American made. The $1600.00 price isn't a bad deal either, even though the Yamaha is under $500.00 which is a real bargain. I'd love to see the Yamaha FG850 in a battle against the Guild D20.

I actually bought both of these at about the same time. I bought the FG 800 and one used FJX 730 sc. The FJX 730 is getting hard to get. They are not making the FJX 830 any more. The FJ model is a medium jumbo vs the dreadnought. I have played them both at the house and I will keep one. I have decided to keep the FJX 730 SC. Even though the FG 800 does vibrate a little more that is bad for me. Because I do a lot of medium strumming. The FG 800 gets a little muddy with the strumming. The FJX 730 sounded much better. They both sound really good playing notes. But, the FJX has better base. It sounds deeper. So, if you will be having a lighter hand you would be perfectly ok. With the FG 800. The construction does feel heavier on the 700 series. More vibration and resonation is not always better. Don't be confused with the medium jumbo size. I play it resting on my left leg. It fells better than the dreadnought; because the waist is narrower. I put the FJX on the dreadnought solid case and it is actually smaller then the dreadnought. There were spaces by the upper bout, lower bout and by the waist. If you read the reviews they all say that the medium jumbo is bigger then the dreadnought. I think it might be like the grand symphony body. It is bigger than the Martin 000s, the OMs, the grand orchestra. But, a little bit smaller than a dread. So, if you plan to do some medium strumming get the 700 series. It is a little heavier built and the resonance won't start to give you a muddy sound.

My suggestion is you all look for FG or FS 7xx still made in Kaohsiung in ROC. The 7000s made in Hangzhou PRC are a bit faster responding but much less complex in overtones. Kind of like a flamenco vs classical. I suspect it's the construction and the laminate quality. I know some are made in Indonesia now. But my experience is the Kaohsiung FGs are the superior instruments. That's my feeling at least.

OK... Listened to this twice and here's is my 2 bobs worth... Firstly I think comparing a solid 700 to an 830 is not a fair or at least equivalent comparison (the rosewood on the 830 plays its part) Secondly, as others noted, the mic positioning on some of the tests was different. With those objections out of the way, I think the 830 beat out the 700S... just. The 830 seemed smooth and mellow yet full and loud (granted, may not be everyone's cup of tea). The 700s had its moments but for my taste it was like a smooth, balanced and blended merlot wine (the 830) against a refined but tight Shiraz (the 700s). Finally, that melody at 10:20 is beautiful and reminds me so much of "you know that was the last thing on my mind" by Dylan/Baez. Thanks for a very engaging comparison.

I live in Mumbai, India close to the sea and there's a lot of humidity here. Would it be better to buy a lam top as opposed to a solid top? Or all i have to do to care for a solid top is keep it in a good nylon-with-foam-padding case and drop in some silica gel packs to keep the humidity at bay?

I know this is 7 years old, but I was hoping you could get hold of a Yamaha FG 365 S and do a demo with that seriously under rated awesome guitar! I know how wicked they are because when I was 12 I bought a $25 acoustic with money I earned helping my mom sell vintage items at flea markets all summer and all winter, every Saturday and Sunday what else do 12 year old boys want to do??? OF COURSE it sucked, but that was 1974 and if I could turn back time and spend just a minute with my mom I would trade my left nut! What?? Have you seen what they can do with plastic nuts for dogs?? ") She paid me $25 a day which was seriously generous in 1974 and I mostly bought vintage WWI & WWII stuff such as a WWI officers sword which had battle damage on the blade, also bought a WWII helmet and a pineapple grenade, gutted of course, I loved things like that. One Saturday I spotted this acoustic in the back of the guy who sold me all those cool vintage items for dirt cheap. Mom was a veteran flea market shark and she taught me to scout around early in the morning as people were just unloading their items because the very best items were there to be had before anyone was permitted in!! I bought the guitar, and of course my folks rolled their eyes thinking it was a $25 wall hanger, but I loved Elvis and the frigging Beatles and I wanted to be a huge rock star and get all the hot chicks! Dad told me if I stuck with it for a year he'd buy me any guitar I wanted, thinking I'd lose interest in a few days! A year later, after blisters turned bloody fingers which turned rock hard, I put down the cheese grater and Dad bought me a Yamaha FG 365 S with a hard shell flight case!! At 15, I STUPIDLY traded that sweet axe for an electric guitar that was so awesome I can't even tell you what the hell it was or what ever became of it!! Now, at 61 I have a Yamaha FG 365 in rare black, and whoever built that specific guitar was having the very best couple of months, or however long it took to build because that is the very best FG 365 I've ever played and I've played a bunch! I've had lots of acoustics and electrics and traded or sold them all except for the Yamaha FG 365 and my Epiphone Excellente. I had to sell my Casino and my Seagull Maritime to buy the Excellente which cost $2,000 CDN tax included without a damn case EPIPHONE!!!! I swore to myselfish I would NEVER sell or trade those two guitars, and it turns out, I'm a filthy liar! Anyway, I'm hunting for another Yamaha FG 365 S and they're damned hard to find, and the few I have seen aren't in great shape and are all close to or over $1.,000!!! It was a blatant copy of the Martin D45 if I recall correctly. It was such an awesome great sounding and playing lady that absolutely refused to go out of tune!! And at 15, the official year when Canadian young men are most retarded, I decided to go extra retarded!! That swine in Toronto's famous "The Trading Post" saw me coming ten miles away!! They must still be talking about... "remember the time that extra retarded idiot kid traded that awesome FG 365 S and case for a stick with yoyo strings on it! BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAAA...hey Cletus pass yer uncle brother daddy a beer...oh and fetch me my pissing pot!" Wah Wah Wah Wahhhhhhh...BUMPADUMP TSHHHHHH! Jack ~'()'~

I bought the FS-730S last year (has rosewood back & sides) & am very happy w/ it. I am a fingerpicker (not much of a strummer) & It sounds great. I don't know whether or not to upgrade to the newer model to get the benefits of scalloped bracing. I'm torn. which guitar to buy in yamaha fg800series . please tell me sir...
@chiranthan818 жыл бұрын
FS800 is for finger playing.. thinner and produces mellower sound, FG800 is good.. has a more concentrated bass sound.. FG830 is (I think) got a rosewood back and sides apart from the solid top (More expensive)

So besides the scalloped bracing on the fg800, which would you prefer. I'm a first time guitar player. Should I purchase the 800 since the 700s might get discontinued? Anyone could answer

Hi, i just bought fg800 yesterday and i noticed small bulge on the top nearvthe bridge. Is it normal?
@AlamoMusic4 жыл бұрын
A slight bulge is normal due to string tension. It can be exaggerated due to excessive humidity which is not desirable but some bulge is typical.

thanks again. just wondered how the 830 compares with an LL16?
@LewieLeway4 жыл бұрын
Nice review but sticking an ad in where you have just changed from the 800 to the 700? Not a good idea.

You did not keep the guitars in the same place next to the mic.....the 700 sounds louder then the 800
@dgale10237 жыл бұрын
Is the 800 really that much better or is he playin it better?
@AlamoMusic7 жыл бұрын
It is that much better. The S stands for solid top.

Yes while this is an old video...I had to chime in that comparing a layered rosewood back to a layered mahogany in any such comparison IS futile, especially on You Tube...worthless commercial Alamo
