After having it honed, I decided to just put new rings in it because I did not want to sink money into a new piston, ring set, and overbore until I was sure the rest of quad was salvageable. After all, this was sunk in a lake. Like the guy at the machine shop said, put it together, see how it is, and worse case is it burns oil and would need a rebore. Funny thing is, it runs mint, burns no oil, and has plenty of power. Ring clearance was also fine, I had the service manual for referance. Thanks

Thanks for the tip, but it did not take less than a minute for me to push the ring down with the depth gauge.

No, it is a YFM600, but I have found many parts are identical. I think the 660 replaced this model...........great machine. Thanks for viewing.

is the piston rings in the 600 go in the same way as a 660?

Do you know if replacing the rings will solve compression issues

Joshua Davala hello. ring replacement is not a guaranteed fix for low compression. valves are another possibility. that's why mechanics do a leak down test. Here's somthing you can try. take a compression reading, then squirt some motor oil into the cylinder and immediately repeat the test. if compression gets significantly better, rings are a good bet. if it stays low, more likely a valve issue. if you do the rings, take the cylinder to a machine shop that does motor work and have them check the bore for excessive wear. if its good, have them hone it, if it's bad, you'll need to have it bored, or sleeved, and youll need a new piston. good luck.
