Thanks for this! I was getting really bad phasing issues on one plugin, but switching the MIDI I/O Mode from Multi to Single has fixed it! Although I’ve just noticed it reverts on power-down...

It is a pain! - Another work-around is to de-select the green kbd ctrl icons and then you could save that away as a peformance for use with VST's...

I like to think I have plenty of knowledge regarding midi setups but the MODX way of doing things does make it a little confusing. Your video adds some clarity to the situation and makes me glad it's not just me that's had this problem, so, thanks for that! :) Good tips to Yamaha also. I really hope they take notice.

Thank you. The Montage/MODX OS is quite complicated, and these tutorials are very helpful. I wasn't aware of those utility settings, so I would select a single part performance when I was programming some VSTi drum parts to prevent multiple MIDI note messages from being transmitted.

It appears the MODX wasn't prioritized to control VSTs which is a shame. To keep things simple when I do control them I will probably continue to use the Arturia line of controllers. That said I think it would be nice for Yamaha to implement your requests.

Thanks for this video! I really like the MODX (sound, keys, etc. for that price) and I'm using it 99% standalone for live playing. But the MIDI options on the almost 15 years old Motif Rack ES are so much more flexible and versatile and easy to use. Hopefully Yamaha will work on the OS, because the MODX has a lot of potential.

Hi Chris - I know what you mean! I've got the XS Rack, and with the VST integration of the rack, I've been wondering about the wisdom of the MODX for me - however, on the rack, I'm missing the ability to use Samples - plus the FM...so I'm sticking with the MODX for now, and I do hope Yamaha make the most of its potential going forwards...

i agree fully with your video and the related infos about quick setup which is me more confing than helping. This always interupts my musical ideas workflow and forces me to think about switching back and forth. Another problem with MODX-Midi is the modx arps cannot be played by incoming Midi from the daw. You can use the arps only by playing the modx keyboard. ANd i will not miss the 10.000 arps modx has as presets. This is awsome. But i would like to play them from midi daw and not with my keyboard.

Thanks Waveform. As an addendum to my comment, and on skimming the downloaded MODX manual, you're probably correct, the internal recorder is fairly simple, but it looks like you can actually copy select areas of the note data from the sequencer tracks to the arpeggiator to use in voices and performances. Cool! Well, that's how I read it but without having my MODX yet it's hard to tell for sure. All the best.

Useful video, but if using the Modx just to control a VST instrument why wouldn't you just use a default init performance with a single part? Doesn't that achieve the same thing?

Hi Will, you are right of course, though people want to use the MODX and VSTi’s at the same time, and this multi-midi setup seems to be unique to the Montage/MODX…

Great video! I've just started using my MODX7 as a VSTi controller and have been struggling through it. That single/multi trick is a much better approach than what I was doing. I have a quick follow-up question - I would like to use the four faders to control VSTi parameters, but all of them output on MIDI CC#7 (volume) and there doesn't appear a way to change this. This means that there's no way to assign different faders to different VSTi parameters unless I'm completely missing something. Any suggestions?

Hi Scott, thanks for subscribing. You are right about the sliders (as things stand in the current firmware) - small consolation, but you can use the 4x knobs as controllers 17-20, and 21-24 by hitting the assign button once or twice alongside them when in multi-mode...

@@waveform-synths Thanks for the quick reply! That's what I suspected regarding the sliders. I got the knobs working as you described, which is useful for now. I was using an old Kurzweil K2600XS before the MODX, which was completely programmable with respect to its many controllers. However, after 17 years of reliable service, it was a big, loud (fan & hard drive) aging beast that needed to be replaced.

Help! I just got Modx7, and my interface is M-audio elight, 8 in - 8 out XRL. 1. How to use Modx7 in cubase as completely as possible. 2. How to make audio sound through R-L Modx7 out to M-audio elight. I plugged the connection cord via the XRL jack but it didn't play audio through M-audio every time I played it. I really need detailed help. Thank you very much!

Hi, thanks for the video! I curently try to connect my MODX for VST Studio One, but there are some problem. The thing that urgently i want to ask, how if my MODX lost its control? i mean i cant control the volume through the MODX and i even cant use my sustain pedal. Unless, i set ouput in Cubase to MODX- Port 1, and monitoring audio through MODX. But i want to use Focustrite as my audio Interface and where i could monitoring the audio too. Is there some solution for this?

Hi Christof - I use a stylus from an old pda in this video and also a replacement stylus for a Samsung Galaxy note that was about £1.50 on ebay.

If you have an old carbon pencil with a rubber(not the sand type) eraser at the other end, the rubber end will do fine, I think.

I'm a hairs breadth away from selling my MODX due to this nonsense. Great video pointing out the flaw, I figured out the workaround already but it's good to see someone making a video that perhaps Yamaha will see. It's a shame they have decided to make such a convoluted and uninspiring workflow for what could be such a great studio instrument. Surely they knew that this was going to be a producers tool and not just a beefed up stage piano!? I just dont get why they used MIDI channels per part, 99% of the time it is completely pointless and has made the instrument frankly annoying to me. I think I will give them another month to fix this before I sell, though tbh it's not the only thing I hate about the OS and they are going to have to really change a fair bit about it to persuade me to keep it. It's a damn shame cause I really love having so many great sounding orchestral elements on hand like this... Come on Yamaha!

Planning on getting the MODX next month. Please, is it possible to use it as an external vst engine ie connect it to a DAW, say Reaper or ProTools and have various tracks (drums, piano, pads, guitars etc) running as fully editable midi tracks, with the sounds coming from the MODX.

@@tylerdurden2577 I got the MODX. You can work that way I mentioned above but it's a different workflow. You play it like a vst but you have to render to audio (u can render 8 channels at once) to effectively mix and master in your daw. Lemme know if u have any more questns

I thought i was the only one. Im not an expert but ive been recording using midi for 30 years and basically its always been straight forward. But the modx is just inexcusable how complicated it is. I too, am just about ready to sell my 2 week old keyboard

can you use the modx to control VST parameters? It seems to me that even when you are in the record to daw mode, the knobs and buttons do not transmit CC message, but instead they either do nothing or operate the controls on the keyboard itself. For example if you want to use the INC and DEC to change presets in something like Arturia keylab, you can't do that

Hi, - you are right, the MODX doesn't really lend itself to CC control as the function of the controls vary depending on what modes you are in. I use a little Korg NanoKontrol and a Novation Launch Control XL for VST control...

I use modx to control vsts in FL Studio. I click link to controller and move a knob or slider on the modx and it works.

How do you transfer the MODX sounds into a hard drive? Or into FL studio?

On windows audio input choose line (modx) FL Studio choose FL Studio asio driver. Click on a audio channel and on mixer input choose 1-2 Play audition or keyboard and sound should be heard.

I use mine in FL Studio as a midi controller to play my vsts. The Yamaha Modx can also adjust any knob in FL Studio or on any vst.
