And Yamaha is making a big deal about the MODX’s ability to import older DX patches, yet many of them won’t play the same way without aftertouch. Even the lower-end 4op DX11 had aftertouch.

Fantastic sounding synth, but i wished yamaha would give us all what we really want, a new modern cs80 with 12 voices and a 12 op fm engine built in too :)
@WARDISWARD
@WARDISWARD 6 жыл бұрын
wtf would you need 12 operators ? 8 is more then enough , and these have also the spectral skirt parameters like on the mntage / and the fs1r
@subconscious.com_usa6691
@subconscious.com_usa6691 6 жыл бұрын
Ward de jager I know it might seem excessive to have 12 operators, but i once dropped on a cheap dx11 at a old secondhand shop for $75 a couple of years ago which is a very underrated synth with just 4 ops, but it had a 8-part multitimbral mode that you could use, which allowed you to do 32 operator patches that you could spread out in the stereo field, which sounded very fat and very abrasive, but as i learned more about fm synthesis, i realised i could control all the operator with the envelopes, so i could have operator coming in a fading out to make huge progressive pad type soundscapes that sounded other worldly and lasted for ages, you could do all sorts of mad sounds with it from a attack of a piano morphing into a huge pad with modulation coming in halfway through then morphing into a bell sound morphing into a bass etc etc, you could also do modular type progressive drones textures similar to what future sounds of london used to do, it was also capable to do dubstep type sounds too, Also sorry for my ignorance but what is spectral skirt parameters :)
@WARDISWARD
@WARDISWARD 6 жыл бұрын
I have a nord modular and tg77 and I hardly use more then 6 operators . The magic lies in the algoritms and feedback . an feedback enabled operator = saw ...use this as modulator for 0hz sine ( the tg 77 can do this ) instant sine shaping heaven . The tg77 and nord modular are fm monsters
@subconscious.com_usa6691
@subconscious.com_usa6691 6 жыл бұрын
Thous tg77 are awesome buddy, Yes i learned all that that you mentioned by studying how all the presets were made by just looking at the parameters and the different algorithms and how they were used to make a certain sound and taking notes. also the dx11 hasn't just got sine waves it has them all from square to triangle to saw etc etc, so you didnt really have to make other waveforms from sine waves, your able to create even more complex waveforms with mixing and matching them all, so its a little bit different than a dx7. Also some of the types of sounds i mentioned i was making with it apart from the pad type sounds ,wouldn't be the type of sounds you could use in tune with beats and other parts, it was just experimental sort of fat ambient type textures, i also did normal stuff too i didnt always use 32 ops :) Any way awesome buddy

Several months back one of the local Yamaha resellers mentioned that Yamaha hinted at coming out with a pared down version of the Montage in August. I was looking at maybe getting a Montage for quite some time. I just loved the sounds that it produces. But it really is way more machine than I need, because I won't really dive into the whole FM programming. So when August came and went I just figured it was vaporware. Then the other day there was mention (leaks) about Yamaha officially releasing something new today. So not that it is out I can't wait to try one out. Thanks for this first look and sounds video Doctor Mix.

It looks logical. The same they did with the Motif XF and the MoXF it's now with the Montage (I own one) and the MODX. Same than Korg is doing with the Kronos/Kross. The market shows the path for the brands. All it's about sound generation (AWM) and the architecture itself. Same than the Montage, same OS also. In my point of view AWM engine sounds more than great and the DX engine too.

Why didn’t this exist two weeks ago when I was deciding between the Roland Fa06/Juno Ds61 and the Korg Kross?! I ended up buying the Fa06, but this looks like Yamaha’s competitor against those two, having the nice acoustic sounds, while also having synthy stuff as well. Would be fun to see a competition video or a comparison at least between the three!

I think Yamaha have done a grand job and focused on what players want, keeping the music enjoyable (any Yamaha MOxxxx synth delivers the smile when you play) is so important. An instrument is to be played and inspire you, save all that modular beeping bollocks that never gets used to the nerds. 😄

This is going to be a game changer. 90% of the capabilities of a Montage for 50% of the price (or less) at 33% of the weight. It makes the entire Motif series, the Roland FA and most of Korg's range obsolete overnight. It's simply a new standard in price, performance, sound and portability.

hyperbole much?

Hey, I own a Montage, Kronos and MOXF among other gear, so I'm just calling it as I see it. My Montage is the star of my studio but it was way too expensive and it remains too heavy and big to gig with. Yamaha has kept the sound, motion engine, FM and everything that I like about the Montage but made it half the price and easily giggable. It's like if Porsche started building 911's for Mazda Miata money, but these 911's also seat six easily. I own a MOXF8 (like I said) and compared to this, I think it's obsolete. The MODX has all of my MOXFs sounds but also hundreds of much better ones--including pianos and EPs that are just light years better. Sometime hyperbole is the right level of reaction.

do you work for yamaha lol.....it has no after touch, no sequencer, no sampling and limited midi fuctions. and half the polyphony of the montage in dx mode. so yea its limited ...not a game changer at all lol
@geoffk777
@geoffk777 5 жыл бұрын
Ok, it has no after touch. So what? Neither did the MOXF or most of the synths in this price range. Anyway, some people, myself included, rarely ever use it The sequencer is a more controversial item. It does have a 16-track sequencer, but you can't really edit with it--only overwrite tracks that you don't like. As with the Montage, Yamaha expects that most users will use a DAW for sequencing. They even include a copy of CuBase to use for this. Some people find this reasonable. Personally, I think editing sequences in keyboard hardware is straight out of the 1990's, and I don't use it on instruments like the Kronos that can do it. It has no sampling, but it has 1.5 Gb to store Montage or Motif samples. That's good enough for me.. Also, it's a big improvement on the MOXF (where you had to buy an expensive flash RAM board) or most competitors (which can(t import any samples at all). Not sure what you mean by "limited MIDI functions", but it also has good USB connectors available. And half of the FM polyphony with 64 notes will be plenty for most people--especially when most competing synths have no FM engine at all. I don't work for Yamaha--but I am a big fan of their gear. I have a Montage 8 and a MOXF 8, and I can see that the MODX combines the best features of both units in a very appealing way. I might even replace both of these keyboards with one MODX.

Yamaha. Just give us a knob laden Fm synth. Like the eurorack Akemies Castle. With analog filters and effects. That's it.

I would prefer the Jupiter XM over this. This Yamaha dosent have the sounds used in Victims of circumstance or Tangerine Dreams Logos. I like those sounds but it seems like no new synthesizer has them with is a shame!🥺
