I bought an MX before the MODX, and yes the MODX is twice as good! That said, all of the MX sounds, which originated from MOTIF's, are still included with the MODX. If you playing only MX sounds in your MODX, then they are going to sound about the same But the MODX is much more capable. The MX has 166 megs of sampled waveforms. The MODX has 5.67 gigs of sampled waveforms. 1024 megs = 1 gig! That's a huge difference. The MODX has both the AMW2 engine, and the FM-X engine The large touch screen is a wayyyyy better user interface than the MX. If you want to do any editing, splits, layers or simply put your sounds in the order you need, the MODX is way easier to operate. General sound editing is way better on the MODX. The MX includes 1000 sounds from the MOTIF series, but is incompatible with the tons of sound libraries available for the MOTIF. Using expensive software, some MOTIF sounds could be converted but it's hit or miss if they would sounds even close as they wouldn't be converted apples to apples. The MODX is compatible with the MOTIF, MOTIF ES, MOTIF XS & MOTIF XF sounds. Some of the older ones "may" need a conversion. Newer ones like the XF can load right in, no conversion. The MODX is also compatible with Montage sound collection. The MODX is also compatible with DX7 sound collections, and the TX816 & TX802. The MODX has a vocoder, Super knob, 1/4 inputs that can replace a mixer, and a ton of other features the MX doesn't have. I still have my MX, and it's a great keyboard, but the MODX is easily worth the extra money if you can afford it. It's just just "a little better". It's "a lot" better. The MX has a very limited number of sound collections available you can add past the 1000 incldued sounds. The MODX has tons of sound collections available. If your needs are that basic, than the MX might be fine, but if you plan on having a lot of variety and want to add to what you get, don't hesitate to buy the MODX. Many publications have stated the MODX offers the most bang for the buck of any professional synthesizer bar none.

Another big one I forgot. The MODX has 1 gig of user ram for to load additional samples, and make use of sound collections from both the Montage & MOTIF series that uses additional samples. The MX doesn't have the ability to load additional samples. MODX has additional recording capabilities, and many more things I didn't mention.

thanks for the great explanation. I’m trying to decide between getting the MODX8, MX88, or S90ES. Which do you recommend I get it? Could you possibly explain the pros and cons for each please?
@n8goulet

@@arohana6692 The MODX8 would be an easy choice vs the MX88. I'm not as familiar with the S90ES, but it seems to be based on the MOTIF ES which is much older than the Montage/MODX technology. I also had a MOTIF ES rack. I've found the MODX 10x more useful. Hopefully that alone makes a statement. Yamaha sells a ton of them, but some MODX8's can suffer from rubbing keys. The MODX6 & 7 don't seem to have this issue so much. I believe there are remedy's for it, and it probably only represents a small number of all MODX8's sold, but if you buy a used one be sure to try it yourself or be assured from the seller that it's not an issue. If buying new, may consider getting an extended warranty. I'm not sure if the other Yamaha 88 key synths you mentioned have any potential issues like this or not. I've had my MODX6 since Jan 2019, and I've had no issues with the keybed at all. I switched from a Korg with a premium keybed, and I'm still fine with it.

Having owned the MX88, I think it’s when you start looking at what the one can’t do, that the other can, that the MODX shines. Without even mentioning the “Super Knob” (assignable to foot pedal), the library of sounds and tweakability of the MODX is head and shoulders above the MX.

I think you're both deaf. The MODX is a MONTAGE in a cheaper packaging. The MX has a proprietary sound engine incompatible with anything else. The sounds it has aren't from Motif, they're just based on Motif sounds.

I currently own a MX88 & MX61 and I love them both I'm looking forward to getting the MODX8. People say that MX88 and MODX8 feels cheap the fact is they made these 2 two full size keyboards lightweight so that they're easy to travel. Don't get me wrong I love the montage but if your a musician that does a lot of gigs and travel I would chose the MODX8 you get the same sound as the Montage just easier to move around with

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem...ew... yesI said the "P" word! For decades I have chosen Yamaha because I rely on the quality and I've never had a problem...Well until I got an MX88. I feel the same way about Tascam. I don't know if it's just me or what but it seems these days everything is being made so cheaply. The tech is there but the hardware has gotten cheaper every decade. ANYWAY... I got my MX88 last June specifically to tackle a project I had planned for a year. Having previously had a few Motif's I'm familiar with what the MX has and for that...no surprises. The action is good, but I also have a P255 and these actions are supposed to be the same, but they are not. It's all about the feel. ANYWAY...right out of the box after getting everything setup to start the project I noticed a crackling noise every time I turned the MX on. Consistently on every power on with first note/chord strike. All on attack of the note. BUT... after a few notes it would subside. Knowing now... I should have immediately returned it, but anxious to get the project going I made the exception since the noise consistently seemed to subside upon playing. It was like it just needed to warm up. Fast forward to project completion. After weeks of practice and many out takes I had a track I was happy with. BUT as I began to listen more carefully readying for mixdown I began to notice there were STILL crackles within the track. Be they ever so subtle... they were there, all on the strike/attack of the note! Because this noise is specific to the strike/attack of the note I was able to work around it by playing a little less aggressively and was eventually able to get a keeper track. However some crackling was still there. I performed a number of tests to ensure it wasn't another piece of equipment or a bad cable and found unanimously my MX has a problem. So yesterday I boxed it up and sent it to the nearest service center and it should be interesting to see what they find. So that said... has anyone else noticed this dilemma?

I don't know if the MODX sounds twice as good, but it definitely sounds much better. The samples are cleaner and more realistic. And the scenes and superknob provide for much more realistic playing dynamics, like stopped strings and flutter. The FM tones on the MODX also add a dimension that's missing on the MX. Overall, the MX sounds like it's one generation back--like an MOXF for example. In fact, a used MOXF would be a good alternative to a new MX88, if an MODX is too expensive.
@geoffk777

@U tube fun It does have a bizarrely long sustain. They must have looped it or done something weird, because I've never head a real piano that sounded like that. The MODX is very programmable, so you could probably alter one of the realistic pianos to sound like that, if you wanted. But having a "real" piano sound that so obviously artificial and fake is a flaw rather than a virtue, in my opinion.
@geoffk777
@geoffk777 3 жыл бұрын
@U tube fun Well, I disagree that the MODX sounds static and clinical. Actually, it features Motion Sequencing, which allows for very complex, moving modulations to be set up. You can also create patches with as many as 64 oscillators, defined if you wish. As you'd imagine, this can sound very warm and fat. Not to mention the excellent FX section that you mentioned. Honestly, I have a lot of instruments, but this one is exceptional and a favorite.
@geoffk777
@geoffk777 3 жыл бұрын
@U tube fun A lot of the Montage/MODX synth presets have a very EDM vibe, which you can definitely hear in those examples. Even so, the two "P5" (Prophet 5?) presets sounded pretty analog. Likewise in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIXIc5-QaNOUr7s A lot of the pads are EDM oriented, but there are also some very warm analog saw pads. And many of the sounds in both videos go through dramatic changes from the Motion Sequencing that I mentioned. They are anything but static and dull. Yes you can use FM and some of the more digital samples to create a very digital sound. But you can also use the virtual oscillators to convincingly emulate an old analog system. It's very versatile.
@snuppssynthchannel
@snuppssynthchannel 3 жыл бұрын
@U tube fun The Modx/Montage can sound generic, partly because of a lot of the sounds have been programmed that way, with a lot of the sounds sounding flat and processed in a way, (like the autocomp stuff that you presented in the link) which is the result of a lot of factory sounds relying too much on internal effects or poorly implementation of them. The Montage is very much capable of sounding excellent, as it has excellent D/A converters, analogue outputs, good filters and the internal FX are pretty good when programmed right. The synth engines themselves are both very capable as well, although it do have a very hi-fi, clear quality to it. A lot of older Yamaha AWM/AWM2 synths have a grit to them that I also like.

It's true that Yamaha has used some samples for a long time. But you should realize that the MODX includes *ALL* of the sounds and samples from the MOXF/Motif XF. And then, in addition to those patches and samples, it also includes hundreds of new sounds and several gigabytes of brand-new samples. The piano, strings, brass and many others are brand new and were created just for the Montage/MODX. Since you have the older MOXF sounds, you can easily compare them directly on the MODX and hear the improvement in the new samples. So, to put it bluntly, you are wrong. There are differences and there are newer samples and sounds.
@n8goulet
@n8goulet 3 жыл бұрын
The MX & the MODX are not "basically the same". What is the same, is that the sounds of the MX are included in the MODX, plus hundreds, if not thousands, of additional sounds. The MODX has dozens of times the onboard sample memory. So there is no way they basically......sound the same..Unless your using one of the patches that exist in either. It's soft of like an upgraded computer, only it also includes a lot more software included in additional to the additional capabilities over the older model which the MODX does retain compatibility from the past 20 years, plus much of the 80s.

This is a joke, right? Because the MX definitely is. It's neither a synthesizer nor a digital piano. It's a weird type of ROMper with rubbish artificial piano sound. It even sounds out of tune occasionally and it produces horrible resonant interference between some notes. It is only useful as a midi keyboard. The MODX, especially the new + iteration, is a superb fully functional synthesizer and a workstation. It's really a MONTAGE in a cheaper body with less physical controls.
