They are very good. I would be happy to pay a per song download, but not for a whole set which I don't want or need. Even Apple lets you buy individual songs rather than whole albums.

The individual performances for the Fantom is $10. There's no easy way to separate, save and load individual sounds on the Montage. Also, whether you get one sound or a full collection, it uses up an entire library slot on your Montage or MODX and you only have 8. If you load a User file, it will wipe out your own sounds. The packs come out cheaper as well as well for $35 which includes 16 song-specific performances as well and several dozen single part performances.

Armz316 me personally, I wouldn’t even consider the Kurzweil as the interface is stuck in the 90’s. It’s primitive by today’s standard. Sound wise, there are a few highlights but overall functionality does not compare with the Kronos or Montage.

Simon Hoban No, it’s not possible with Africa as it is made up of two separate performances. I programmed harmony notes with the solo and the marimba part and it wasn’t poss to keep it within one performance.

Nice. Did you download the song or put in each track in a DAW then download it?

atcfisherman No external DAW used. The bass and drums were recorded and played back on the Kronos’s Sequencer, the rest of the sounds are played live on the Montage. The Kronos is plugged in the Montage’s audio inputs and outputs of the Montage into a Steinberg UR22 into my iPhone.

Ok. The difference I see in the Kronos and Montage is basically the sequencer. If you had to choose one, which would it be?

atcfisherman Kronos. Its not just the sequencer that’s the difference between the two. It’s s a lot of things, 9 synth engines, dedicated sampler, audio and midi sequencer. fully featured Setlist Mode, KARMA, HD Sample Library streaming, Wavesequencing, expandability among lots of other things. It’s not a 1:1 comparison between a Kronos and Montage.

Ok. Thanks. I wish the Kronos 73 was synth action. I don't like the Kronos weighted action. It feels too heavy compared to other weighted keys. I was going to get a Kronos but I wanted more than 61 keys with synth action and so I got a Genos. It's a great keyboard but it doesn't have the Smooth Sound Transitions and that's frustrating for live performance with the band. So I was thinking of a Montage 7.

Firstly, thank you for such an amazing video. Like a lot of people here, I'm stuck between buying the Kronos 2 or the montage. I'm a long time motif user and personally love the sound of Yamaha. My only set back with the motif was there were lot of limitations to programming it. In your Africa video, I see you've got your Harmony in the marimba and kalimba parts spot on. How do you do that with the montage ? I Know Korg has the pad chord functions. Does the montage have a similar feature ?

Garth Dmello thanks! The Montage doesn’t have a pad feature but I didn’t use that for Africa for the Kronos either. Since the Montage has 8 elements per part, with the use of scenes and individual tuning for each of the elements, I was able to keep the solo part within one Performance even with varying harmonies and sounds.

Garth Dmello I prefer the Kronos as a performance keyboard mainly because of Setlist Mode. It allows you to put performance notes, chords, transpositions and easily copy, paste and rearrange slots. Also allows you playback of the sequencer while being able to switch sounds in Setlist mode without interrupting playback. As far as programmability goes, the 9 synth engines of the Kronos, (ten if you count wavesequencing )gives you more options and sonic variety. The 2 keyboards are quite different from each other and complement each other very well. Having both keyboards on stage makes for a killer rig.

Phil Alvarez, thanks for getting both the Kronos and Montage sets! There’s a performance notes PDF that comes with the Montage Favorite Covers Set. It tells you which scene and controls to use for each part of the song. At the moment I haven’t got videos in a live setting which I’m hoping to get done once gigging season in Australia starts again. Things go quiet in winter here.

Haha, Thanks Mark, I'll take that as a compliment. Sorry to disappoint though, no trickery involved. The backing track (drums and bass) was recorded on the Kronos, I've got a pedal switch to trigger playback on its sequencer so I didn't need to press the play button. The Montage itself was played live...there were multiple takes as I messed up a lot. Shot and edited using iMovie on my iphone 7.

Kronos' output was fed through the Montage's A/D input while the Montage's outputs connected to a UR22 connected to the iphone via USB and a USB to Lightning adaptor (camera connection kit).
