This is a how-to video showing how to record a couple of simple patterns on the MOXF8 keyboard using the "pattern section" function and showing how you can switch between the different patterns you have created as you play along with them in live performance.

I just got a new MOXF8 less than a week ago.🤤 This tutorial was the most helpful I have seen yet--show the buttons, the display, the sequence, and how it comes together. Not over-spoken, no tangents or superfluous commentary. This is what I wanted to know how to do, and you showed me. Perfect for how I learn. I will be checking out more of your videos as I grow! Thank you.

Very nice set of videos, Cathy. I don't know why ppl don't want audio instruction with their videos. It would be hard to teach an instrument without any sound, I think. I try to learn as much as possible, so I love your explanations, and prefer the added information. Thank you for taking the time, and I hope all your keyboard dreams come true!

Cathy, this is one of the best, if not the best video I've seen on this. I used to have the Motif ES8, and now that I have the MOXF8 (same functions for sequencing) I'm just looking for a vid to find the things I used to use years ago. What great talent, great overview and perfectly displayed song. Sidenote. From the original drum beat at the beginning first sequence, I knew exactly what song that was from. So glad to see it come alive before my eyes.

You can use the patch page in the pattern sequencer to copy phrases. This way you do not have to record the phrase a second time.

@seankalifut9948
@seankalifut9948 3 жыл бұрын
@@synthesizerisking2886 In the Pattern Mode there is a tab called Patch. Each part you record is called a phrase and is designated a number. If you record the drum track first in section A it is given the number 1. If you want to copy that phrase to section B all you have to do is select section B and press S4 Patch. Then dial phrase 1.

Thank you Cathy, this really helps me get started sequencing on the this and other Yamaha Keyboards. Not as easy as the Korg Keyboards. I got very frustrated after 4-5 hours figuring out and still didn't quite get it or understand it until now. Two things: I do prefer the audio instructions like the "How to record a song" tutorial as I can always pause and go back instead reading and trying to follow your steps. The next thing is do you have a tutorial on converting patterns into or as a complete song?...Thanks
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 3 жыл бұрын
After you record your pattern, hit F6 (Chain). Then hit record. After you have recorded your pattern in Chain mode then hit "Edit" (RH side of your keyboard over by "Job"). Then hit F3 (Song). It will ask if you want to convert the pattern a song. Dial up the song number you want to send it to. Then hit "enter." Now go to Song Mode and dial up the song and your pattern will be there. The bottom line is you have to record your pattern into a chain before converting it to song. If your pattern is moving between Sections A, B, C, etc., you will have to manually push those buttons as you record it to a chain. If you mess up half way through you will have to start your record over. Please also note that when you start to record a chain, the tempo always defaults to 120. If your song is slower or faster, you might want to change the tempo after you hit Chain then Record. You will see a place to alter the tempo. HOWEVER, you can always adjust/alter the tempo once you have it over in song mode and it might be a good idea to chain-record it slower if you are trying to push buttons to change sections at just the right time. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. Be sure to watch all of my videos. I think I covered this in one of them????

Hi Cathy, thanks for your videos - is there an undo in pattern mode in case I mess up a the last drum beat? thanks Chris
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 5 жыл бұрын
If you watch my How to edit a Song video, you will learn how to delete selected notes from a pattern, in the event that you messed up the last drum beat. I think the easiest way is to stop the sequencer between beats so that you always have the undo option for each layer that you add.

Hello. I love your videos! I have many performances but I now want to sequence some of the parts and still play others locally while I perform. How do I do that?
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 6 ай бұрын
In the video it shows me doing just that. After you record your "pattern" or "sequence" you then move to a new track where there is nothing recorded. Choose the instrument you want to play (piano/electric piano/etc.) and then play on that track along with the pre-recorded tracks.

Cathy! Thank you so much for the video! Do you know how we could change the time signature of the metronome while recording these patterns? To say, 3/4? Or to subdivide? Would I go to the general metronome settings or edit it in Pattern mode somehow? Thanks again!
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 Жыл бұрын
When you begin to record a pattern look at the main screen (F1-Play) and you will see a time signature just to the left of the metronome number. Navigate to the time signature using the arrow keys and change it to what you want it to be using the data wheel. If your pattern section A is one time signature, your pattern section B can be a different one, and section C can be different again. But within one pattern section (loop) you are locked into one time signature. Hope this answers your question.

Does the Pattern switch works after one bar or after the full pattern ends or even immediately you press the key?
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 5 жыл бұрын
It always changes on downbeat of the next measure (beat 1 of the next measure). It won't switch immediately. I usually hit the next "section" around beat 3 or 4 of the measure that I am in, and then it then switches on beat 1 of the ensuing measure. Play around with it and get a feel for how it works.
