This is my 2nd instructional video showing ways to record a drum chain (track) in Pattern mode and convert it to Song mode on the Yamaha MOXF8 Keyboard. In this video, I will be using the "Section" function in Pattern mode. This will be done using the pre-recorded drum arpeggios that came on the keyboard. Be sure to also watch my other 2 videos regarding drum recording. I just posted a new one "How to Record a Drum Track Made Easy" that should get you started more quickly.

Great. There isnt much about moxf here on youtube. It's so good to have someone like you sharing them. Congratulations. There isn't so many women doing it as well, so I should say it: Congrats two times. and carry on.

Thank you, your tutorials are a godsend. The MOXF seems impossibly complicated, I could've done all this in a couple of button presses on my Roland Fantom or Korg Kross :(

Keep in mind that I am self-taught. I am sharing what I figured out on my own. There might be an easier way to record drums, but I haven't found it yet. When I do, I will make another video, I guess. Working with drums on my old MotifES8 is much easier.

Cathy T I'd really appreciate any further videos you make, no matter how 'basic' you think they are! A few years ago I had an MO6 which I loved for the sounds but I couldn't get to grips with the user interface so ended up selling it after a very frustrating year of persevering with it. I felt it took all the enjoyment out of playing the instrument. I'm determined not to have the same experience with the MOXF :)

Cathy T I play at home no gigging and no home studio, I just play as a hobby. I mainly play piano music and cover songs using the sequencer. I find all those buttons on the right hand side very confusing with all their multiple uses for tracks/mute/banks/etc. Also I'm struggling to figure out the voice categories and how they're ordered. I can use the Category Search but there seems to be other ways of looking at categories in banks and I'm struggling to find the Preset banks, they all seem to be jumbled up in random order with the User Banks. Thanks. :)

If the MOXF6 is like the MOXF8, which I assume it is, when you hit Category Search, you can dial through the different instrument families to find what you are looking for. Please note that if you hit Category Search and you are in, for instance, "strings" as the "Main" category, underneath the word "Main" is "Sub." If you navigate to the word "All" (under the word "strings") and then use your dial (data wheel) to change to the different sub-categories, it breaks the "strings" into more specific categories, i.e. "pizzicato, solo, ensemble, etc." Maybe this will help you, but I find just scrolling through the instruments seems easy. When I find favorites, I set them as a favorite for easier call-up next time.

Show how to add effects to the tracks. The same effects used when calling up a program. Because when used in a pattern or song they are dry.

This article might be helpful to walk you through creating your own performance. faq.yamaha.com/us/en/article/musical-instruments/keyboards/synthesizers/mox_series/10245/7773/ You will want to put your drums on the 1st voice and if you want them to play the preset loops (drum beats), hit "drum assign" before going to category search and choosing your drums. Then after you set the Limit parameters (highest note you want the drums to play on), only the drum voice will arpeggiate. To initiate them you have to strike a key in the drum note-range that you set up. Hope this makes sense. Limit L and Limit H (see SF4 as mentioned in the article) refer to lowest note and highest note for each chosen instrument voice. You set that by holding down SF4 and then striking the lowest or highest note you want for an individual instrument. These are your split points that you are setting. Hmmmm. Maybe I should make a video. Play around and read the article carefully and I think you will be successful.

Once you create a drum pattern and save it how do you use it to play along with. I can’t seem to get a piano voice and the pattern to play so I can practice without my drummer.
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do. Let's say you custom recorded a drum pattern using "Pattern" mode on the #10 pattern spot. Then you must hit "store" to save it. When you come back to that Pattern #10, you just hit play and the drums that you recorded earlier will start playing (looping). If you want to play along on piano, you will have to open the Mixing window and move to another track (other than drums) to play along on the "piano" voice or whatever voice you want to select for the play along track.

i have a question for cathy T or anyone who could tell me if i have selected all instruments on mixer in my MOXf8 and have previously recorded a song , could I use the same setup to record more songs?
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 3 жыл бұрын
Well, you could hit "job" then "Copy Song" and assign your song to a new song number. The problem is that all of your recorded material will still be there. You will have to go through each track and delete the already recorded material on each track before starting to record your new song. The best thing to do is just re-enter the instruments on the new song. It doesn't take that long, especially if you have assigned these instruments to your "favorite" list or put them in as "User" voices (watch my videos). In other words, you can't just copy the assigned instruments only from one song to a new song without also having the recordings you made on the first song copy with it.

Cathy, are you self taught or have you taken training on the MOXF8? You make it look so easy.

I am self taught. I have had a Motif ES8 for 14 years but recently got a new MOXF8. The old frustrations started coming back as I tried to figure out the new keyboard (lots of changes). The How To videos on KZbin don't seem to go very deep and never seem to address my issues, so I decided to make a few videos to spare others the same frustration.

great video and very helpful but I must say recording drums like this is so uninspiring. I wish someone could come up with a more immediate fun way of getting rhythm tracks together. I used to own an old Ensonique SD1 workstation I often regret selling it because it was so quick and brilliant for doing any kind of drum track. The best keyboard sequencer I have ever come across. Quick fun and intuitive. They dont make em like that anymore. i now have a Korg krome and it still does nt beat the SD1 fo fun and ease

Watch this video for a quicker easier way to record drums for your songs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKrYlJKed5ifgc0 If you just want to play along with drums without recording a long drum track, you could just go to Pattern Mode - Mixing - Voice- Drum Assign. Choose your drums, then record a 4 bar loop. Then hit Pattern again and open the main window. See F4 (Patch). Push F4 and you will be able to navigate to a blank track and play piano or whatever other instrument you want to play along with the drum loop.

Keep in mind that I am self-taught. I am sharing what I have figured out. I often wonder if there is an easier way to do things that I just haven't caught on to yet, but I wanted to at least share what I know because didn't find videos that covered my needs. I know there is a lot of frustration out there and hopefully I have helped someone through a tight spot in a project, or at least helped a new owner to not cry (as much).

Well, I think it is a wonderful keyboard, but what you have to know is this: I believe most people who have home recording studios do the bulk of their recording with the keyboard hooked up to a Mac computer and use Logic or ProTools or whatever. I do a fair amount of simple recording jobs on the MOXF8 only, but when I have a bigger project, I like to use the instruments on the MOXF8 but record each track in Logic (on the computer) where I can edit a little more easily. As for drum tracks, it is probably much easier to just use the drum loops in Logic or Garage Band, instead of the on-board drum loops on the MOXF8. But having said all of this, if you are making recordings for live performance - - play-along kind of recordings, I think once you get used to the keyboard, you will find it pretty great.

I am still learning (after 14 years with the keyboard) myself and to answer your question . . YES. Go to Song Mode. Choose the track you want the drums on (push the Mixing button to navigate to the right track). Then hit Voice and then hit Drum Assign (upper right area of your keyboard). Then hit Category Search and find the drum set you want. Then hit record. When you see the window that opens when you hit record, for sequence mode hit "song". Then choose a song number that is available. Then hit play to start recording. You have to initiate the recording by striking a key. BE SURE TO STRIKE A KEY IN THE LOWER PART OF THE KEYBOARD. If you strike a key in the middle of the keyboard nothing will happen. That was my mistake. I think I am going to pull down some of my drum track videos and make a new one!!!!
