** It has come to my attention that despite asking for a standard MT-10, the idiot salesman has given me an SP model without telling me. So this bike actually costs almost 17,000€. Also the standard MT-10 doesn’t have the colour TFT or the electronically controlled Öhlins suspension. **
Yamaha MT-10. 998cc of Crossplane Four cylinder wheely pulling monstrousness!
Curious to see how much improvement Yamaha have made since 2006 when Yamaha first robbed the engine from an R1 and made my FZ1, I swung a leg over an MT-10 and went for a blast!
Still sharing the engine from the current R1, the MT-10 has 160bhp and 111Nm of torque to play with, but in a more ergonomically relaxed and considerably more comfortable layout.
So stay tuned and see how I get on with this notoriously feisty Master of Torque!!
This video was in NO way supported or endorsed by Yamaha. I even had to pay for the petrol myself!! But then that shows just how much value the German dealerships put on making potential customers enjoy their experience!! 🤣🤣 #SalesFail

Great review 👍 I love my 08 Fz1s and I love the Mt10. I bought mine as an insurance CAT N write OFF, cost me £2k plus £750 to get it back into its previous condition, we rode it to Romania week before last and our asses were truly sad long before the journey completed 😂, but it didn't miss a beat, from beating it down the autobahn through to the twisty hills of Transylvania, long live the unloved FZ1 for cheap parts and it's performance is brilliant 👍

I owned a first gen FZ1 which was a fantastic bike - comfortable, powerful, great handling. Then I had a first gen MT 09 which was OK but not the whole package. Now I have a MT 10 and it's like the FZ1 all over again but better. Still comfortable, still a monster engine but with more of everything. This bike will wheelie off the throttle in 3rd gear - something my FZ1 would only dream about. The MT 10 has an electronic steering damper and that feature helps it to remain stable when the riding gets heated. I love the cruise control on boring stretches. My bike is the one with matte grey and yellow wheels so no silver clashing to cause offence. Not to be forgotten is the reliable Yamaha build quality. The valves don't have to be done until 40 000 km or more. A fantastic bike and a keeper!

Very true, there's a lot to love! Hopefully there won't be any nasty Yamaha laziness surprises like with the rotor design of the FZ1. That and the disaster surrounding cracked frame welds has put a long lasting black mark over Yamaha for me. Not because of the problems, that's just a fact of life with mass manufacture. But rather how Yamaha buried it's head in the sand, denied all the problems and expected the customers to foot the bill. Bad practice indeed!
@dmac7660
@dmac7660 3 жыл бұрын
Yes - I heard about the frame crack problem - not Yamaha's best moment. My bike was a first generation model that preceded your line (it had carburetors) and didn't have any major design flaws. I think Yamaha changed significantly when it engineered the MT line starting with the MT09. Their designs became more considered and better geared to the things that enthusiasts love with an eye on value. I don't blame you for feeling burned by the frame cracking issue but the new bike lines are reliable. Hopefully they have learned.

Ello Andy, good review thanks. I just bought an MT10SP and I love it! I have had 4 R1s including an amazing track bike, now that I am too old to lie down on a bike I find the MT10 amazing fun. I used the modes to ride her home before I got to know that amazing engine, now I am back up to full power and wow. I bought her in the UK and rode down to Roma, lovely bike, very stable at speed and really has no faults EXCEPT the engine heating up as soon as you slow down, she just wants to go fast!!!

The modes are standard which is what you use when commuting and easy riding, A slightly more aggressive, and B which is aptly nicknamed Beast mode, on the mt09 they are switched to standard, B slightly more aggressive, and A which is the Mt09s beast mode, the traction control levels are 1, 2,3, and off I’m not sure about the order but it goes something like full control, less control, and rain mode and no traction control on the last one I believe both bikes have the same order, I have both but I bought them new in 2017, they spent a lot of time stored due to winter, then moving, so both of them have about 500 miles each, I’m getting to ride them more now. Both are great bikes but very different when riding them. The mt10 is just pure power, the mt09 seems more relaxed and fun, I couldn’t decide which one I liked best so I bought both.....

Really enjoyed this, Andy. When I saw the obviously off-seasonal appearance i thought "Oh my God, he's gone and bought one!" :) As for modes, I absolutely agree. Totally agree about the modes thing. One of the reasons I fell in love with motorcycles to begin with was the raw, pure, "free" feeling you get when you ride one. I want to do the work. I want to control the ride. Not a computer. I'm definitely no fan of all the crazy electronics these days. Also, when it breaks, you're going to have to sell a kidney to pay the technician bill
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
Totally. I think there has to be some middle ground, where the modes are there, but they're more seamlessly and invisibly integrated.

@@AndyManCam I guess part of it for me is, I don't understand the desire to lay out the cash for a 150+ hp fire breather, then due to the "advanced safety features (training wheels) only use 100 of those horses. Why not save yourself some cash and just get a bike with 100 hp to begin with? I guess it's not as cool...seems silly to me.

It’s got a drink problem for sure > 29L in 380 kilometres is only 37mpg average! My BMW R1200rs would cover 600 kilometres (more if I’m just cruising) on those same 29L ... Great fun (bonkers) bike though, I got the opportunity to ride one myself a couple of weeks ago! I only averaged 33mpg in my hour of testing it!..😳 Yep the front wheel definitely doesn’t like the tarmac very much, especially in A-Mode - kept coming up on me over ‘every little ridge’ in the road at speed!! 😄 Proper hooligan bike. 👍🏻 I’ve still got to try an MT09sp, before I make my final decision on which shall be my second “play bike”....

Hi Andy, I am a fz1 rider too. Honestly with your current fz1 do you feel like you need to upgrade to this model? The fz1 is a nice bike and with a tune and the right parts on it, it's pretty hard to justify an upgrade in my opinion to any other inline 4 or twin street bike.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Luqman. My feelings exactly mate. This was more out of curiosity than anything and you’re so right. All I need is an ECU retune and a hi flow air filter and I’ll have a bike almost as formidable as the MT-10 but for less than a third of the price! I was wondering what I could maybe consider as a next ride, and there just isn’t really anything that excites me enough to go through the faff and Stress of changing!!
@luqman1994
@luqman1994 5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam I think as fz1 riders, it's quite hard to justify for an upgrade. My fz1 has a leo vince sbk slip-on with a high flow air filter. All that I'm left with is the tune and a dyno. It probably will match up with any modern street bike at 1/3 the price or lesser :) Do make a video when you tune and dyno yours!
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve just ordered a BMC filter, but the dyno could be a sticking point as it has to be a TÜV approved tune to be road legal here in Germany. 😔 But totally agree. It’s an underrated all round superstar of a bike!!

@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with the Power Commander fix, is that it adjusts the percentages of fuel that's already being sent into the engine by the injectors. With the fuel cut over 4500 rpm, the injectors are switched off completely. So the powercommander can't do anything to add more fuel, because 100% of nothing is still nothing. It's an issue that can only really be fixed in the ECU.

@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
I tried that, and it didn’t seem to work. Must have been doing something wrong! I’ve been trying to get used to the throttle on my FZ1 for years. I have, but it still doesn’t make it nice to ride. In my opinion, smooth throttle response is one of the fundamentals of a motorbike. If they can’t make that work, then they should put a pin in all of the other developments until they can.
@Baphomet_biker
@Baphomet_biker 5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam ye I agree, it seem like they don't really care about developing the throttle response, from what I understand it's something to do with emissions. Apparently a remap fixes most of it but at our expense, I will be getting the fueling done when I decat it. But to be honest I only really notice the snatchy throttle at slow speed. Are you looking to buy one?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
Nooooo! I was just curious to see how much better a newer version of my bike is. Seems that some manufacturers have made a better job of throttle response, without failing emissions. Triumph seems to have done a good job from my tiger 800 test ride a while back. Can’t be that difficult. The biggest problem it seems is the deceleration cut over 4500rpm. Makes getting back on the gas mid corner a very sketchy affair. Not sure if it’s exactly the same on the newer bikes. Didn’t have time to really test it.

Is it just me or this thing sounds like a V4? Also i get your complain about the throttle response on your one bike, i've had a '06 FJR1300 with similar problem it was just on or off with not much in between, downright dangerous especially in wet. PC5 was a good cure. And lastly if you're looking for a sweet spot between 2 and 4 cylinders you should get a Triumph triple, but be aver it is highly addictive 😉 Good vid again, keep them coming it has been a while.

Andy Man Cam Yeah there’s certainly nothing too wrong with a FZ1 the time, effort and money couldn’t sort as in making it from a really good bike into a really great bike. There were a could of moments where the speed versus the road I was traveling had my chassis tied in knots but only briefly, ultimately I would’ve liked to the suspension and perhaps a steering damper but I think the basics of the bike are excellent, the only thing I really would’ve liked was some added bottom end torque which is why I coveted the CP4 motor so much and essentially the MT10, although I’ve come to like it (MT10) I still think the FZ1 N and S are better looking bikes, give them a freshen up with leds etc, the CP4 motor and the upgraded suspension and electronics and it’d be a nicer bike than the MT but you know, blah, blah, blah and all that lol

I totally agree! An FZ1N with Öhlins shocks, CP4 engine and LED lights in the same vane as the MT-09 would be an absolute stonker! But that’s just because we like the slightly more timeless naked bike looks. Whereas Yamaha is pushing the Transformer style quite hard at the moment. 🤖

Two things I hate about the MT series, based primarily off my MT 125 but also seeing them on the other MTs and trying them: 1, the suede seat is horrible. May be just grippy enough, but if a single drop of water touches it when I'm not on it, my ass is gonna feel the wetness when I sit on the seat. Plus, they're way too firm for anything more than a short commute or quick blast. Doing 120 miles in one day hurts because of the seat. And 2, the resued mirrors. They are incredibly ugly and are barely useful. That's why I blanked mine off and got bar end mirrors. Also, just outta curiosity, will you be doing any reviews or rides on any 125s? Cheers
@AndyManCam

That’s the danger of a short test ride. No way to tell how things are on a longer ride. Totally agree with the mirrors. They’d be switched out ASAP!! No 125 Test rides planned I’m afraid. I’d be giving a totally biased and unfair opinion as I’m used to the bigger engine. I try to ride things that I at least know a little bit about!

MT-10 vs. FZ1 or '07-'09 FZ6. The 10 has no: center stand; wind protection; fenders to speak of. The Zees have no: pot metal rust magnet Midas muffler underneath, distracting rider modes, fly by wire, ABS, wheelie/launch this and that; which most riders disable if they could anyway. My FZ6 also has that fuel starvation hesitation after decel over 5 grand you mention on your ownership FZ1 video though the 10's fueling's not perfect either. Otherwise, On the Raven FZ6, at town revs, the fueling's analog and not notchy. The six does have a real 5 (US) gallon tank for a 200 mile range. Speaking of tank, there's no plastic anywhere and magnetic tank bags stick like glue. Comments below denote the guzzly nature of the MT. Crossplane cranks with the grouped firing order may impact drive train wear and vibes at lugging revs. Good ole 180 degree 1342 firing order UJM BSB and World Superbikes are still kicking Yamaha's wannabe V4 firing ass. The six towers above its competition even to this day. It has a reported 92 rear wheel horsepower, which is only 4 less than the 2003 R6 the engine's based on. 11.2 in the quarter smokes the 12 second: SV 650; FZ6R; Ninja/Versys 650 all with 60 something hp. Both brakes please. Ride vintage two strokes most of the week and you'll learn to love the back brake.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
I find that in ‚normal’ street riding, the physics at play tends to nullify the back brake. If you’re getting the absolute maximum breaking efficiency out of the front, then the rear wheel has little less than a feather of weight pushing down on it. So the slightest touch of brake will lock it up and it wouldn’t provide any real breaking traction if it didn’t lock up. So i prefer to keep things simple and not have to add another complication that i need to concentrate on. Sure I’m town or slow speed, the rear brake is smoother and balances out the bike. But when I’m already hammering into the mouth of a bend, hard on the countersteering and with the balls of my feet on the pegs, then that rear brake pedal could not be further from what i want to be thinking about!
@kd350
@kd350 4 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam My 'normal' street riding consists of using both, then flaring off the rear or even flaring off the front should conditions demand such as low traction cornering. But first application is both, as the vector force of the rear drives the front tire down. That 70/30 ratio works on dry smooth pavement at high decel rates. Sure it can go to 100/0 at moto gp speeds and braking points. On the street though pavement's iffy, damp, wet, tar snaked and speeds are less etc. Recovering from a locked front is near impossible esp. in the wet. Problem is, when riders rarely think of the rear, and a panic stop entails, where the front doesn't get weighted first, the wreck happens. If rear breaks are so worthless, then go out to your car and pinch the rear brake lines. ABS and eventually IMU ABS will be mandatory because riders think they're Rossi. Marquez smokes his rear pads so explain that. Mick Doohan had a thumb operated rear brake (to help squat the rear mid corner which I do as well), when he had that severe broken leg. Back torque is too inconsistent to rely on. Thanks Andy and best of luck, happy posting.

Same here. My FZ1 was a great touring machine. Smooth on the long runs, agile in the twisties and enough room to move about to avoid cramps! Apparently so! Would have been nice if the salesman had either 1: listened to my request to test ride a standard version or 2: told me that I was riding something 3000€ more expensive than I had asked for!! Very disappointing. Ultimately this video is now quite useless. 😭

@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
No. You bypass a quickshifter by using the clutch. Some situations don’t lend themselves well to quickshifting. Ever tried jamming the shifter from first to second, while crawling along in traffic? So it’s a desirable thing to be able to switch it off completely or change the thresholds at which it becomes active.

Great video man, but I have to say that the never ending cutting of the video after each and every sentence is pretty damn annoying. For some reason this has become a common phenomenon for many youtubers.

Sadly it’s a supply/demand conundrum. Sure the video could be left ‚natural‘ and it would be easier to watch. But then it would also be considerably longer and people wouldn’t watch it in the first place. Rock-youtuber-hardplace.

Andy Man Cam Yeah, I get it, I guess lots of people want the “intensity” that it provides. Personally I’d have preferred it a bit more uncut, something like Motorcyclist magazine’s commuter videos but hey, that’s just me and you have plenty more people to please. :) Anyway I really enjoyed the video and the SP seems like such a phenomenal bike. Cheers!

It's a bitter pill. I'd prefer to make the videos more flowing and relaxed. But I think too many people look at the length of a vid before they click on it. Plus when you lose the goldfish like attention span of your average viewer, then youtube punishes you for the low audience retention! It's a tough balance that I sadly STILL haven't got quite right!! I'll keep trying! :D

Speaking of ECU-flashage, your FZ1 could use a heap of improvement. I had a new 2011 where I went through all the modifications, and it was a TOTALLY different machine when completed. I was shocked. www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/stkvsfinalSO.gif
@AndyManCam

I’m constantly considering ECU flashing. Though Ivan‘s was of doing it is extremely expensive and inconvenient. Using a Powercommander in Germany is also technically illegal, so that also makes me a little nervous!! Not to mention posting the brain of my bike all the way to the US! 😱 There has to be an easier and more convenient way.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam Yeah I'm looking at it from the perspective of the USA, so I'm not sure of the legalities of similar things in another country. There are several ECU options in the states and I can only speak from the benefit of Ivan's setup. As with most things motorcycle, it's a game of Whack-a-mole because as soon as you touch one element, another pops up until you've spent a load of cash and have them all beat down. Personally the powerband on my FZ1 lost all the torque dips, the fuel injection felt like a well tuned carb, felt vibration dropped at least 70% everywhere, the power was improved a lot, zero on/off throttle jerk (fuel-cut was shut off), and the R77 full Yosh system had a great tone. Engine never went above about 195°F after flash whereas before just crawling in 1st gear in traffic it would soar above 230°F in no time.

I agree. But at the same time, demo bikes are supposed to be flogged. If I’m going to drop 13-16k on a bike, I want to know what it can do. Not what it can do in the break in period! I also don’t understand why dealerships put out demo bikes with new tyres on. „Here’s the bike, but don’t ride it like it’s meant to be ridden because the tyres are new“. Very stupid. Give the customers an experience of what the bike will be like at its best, or you’re just putting people off!
