Hey guys. I just got the p515 today and had a few hours with. I was deciding between 3 pianos. Roland fp90-p515-kawai es8. I played all three of them in a music store. I went there for a full week and kept playing them, so I have a few hours on each of these instruments. Let me share with you my experience, maybe it will help you to decide. So for me I was looking for a great piano sound mainly. I have to say the fp90 didnt deliver in the piano sound. To me it felt “muffeled” especially in the mid section of the piano. The bass was there, the treble sounded good, but the mids were kind of dull (and yes I played with the onboare eq sliders, still didnt sound right for me) The Kawai had a fantastic piano sound, a little bit better then the CFX on the p515. Not by much and for a less experienced player the difference isnt much noticable. Es8 has a beautifull expressive acoustic piano. The p515 has a wonderfull piano sound as well, responsive and it cuts really good. I loved playing both of these instruments. Key action: Its on par acroos all three pianos. Just depends what you prefer. The Kawai having the lightest action of these three - for me the best action of all three, really really responsive. The fp90 has a great action as well and the p515 a fabolous action as well, being the heaviest of the three, but has the best feel of those three for me personaly, since its all wood. So obviously I didnt like the fp-90 piano sound. So why did I almost end up buying it? Well, All the other feauters of the fp-90 are great. It has hundreds of sounds, lovely el.piano (the best of the three), has onboard eq, mic input, two volume sliders for controling the layer or split volume (on the p515 you have to go through menus to access that), you can connet to an app via bluetooth, or stream music via bluetooth (p515 can do this as well, but has to connect via cable for the app to work). So these were the advantages the fp90 has over the others.......but still the piano sound just wasnt right to me. So I just decided not to buy it. So the kawai es8 vs p515. If you mainly want an acoustic piano sound and great action, go for the es8- it really is little better. Why didnt I buy it then? Because it has only a handfull of sounds (if Im spending that much money I actually want a more versitale instrument) and also just the lack of bluetooth and lack of other sounds. So the p515.....absolutely love it!! The piano sounds are amazing, has over 500sounds(although many, many of them are not good, and are just fillers like the synth leads, el.pianos in the xg soundset)the main sounds of the piano are all top notch quality though. the keys are wonderfull, looks really nice. Has a 16 track sequencer!! So it sounds great and is feature rich.

@@bettermusic UPDATE: I went back to the store to buy a pair of good headphones. I tried them with the fp-90 and HEY! The roland has a piano designer function...So turns out, you can tweak the piano and so I did, and the result was absolutely fantastic. So I take back my statement about the fp-90 acoustic piano sound. It sounds great when you tweak it to your liking. So overall I am happy with my p-515, but if I knew about the piano designer feature earlier, I would have bought the roland

I don't want all the fancy "sounds." It's seems to me since I'm sticking with classical music Kawai might be the one to chose. Although, how "heavy" are the keys on this Yamaha and how responsive is it?

Excellent review and demo!!! 👏👏👏This one tops it all for me.... I was fortunate enough to be able to play it at a music store in Vegas and they were so kind enough to let me sample it and boy, I fell in love in an instant! The feel of the wood, ivory-like weighted keys, graded hammer action, the sound, the reverb mode, dual-split action, the over-all look and design, everything checks all the boxes for me. There was nothing of this model on a display and they unboxed one for me and I played for an hour or so with some of my fave classical piano pieces and I was so happy and delighted by the sound of this keyboard I lost track of the time. So, I brought my other musician friend the next day and he too fell in love with it! I mean, who wouldn’t be? It’s like the “real” thing!!! Love the CFX and Borsendorfer piano sounds too among many other great sounding intruments that come with it. So many great features in a package!!! It’s pricey?.... yes, but it’s something that will last me a long time, that’s for sure.... this is my gift to my self this Christmas!Goodluck on those considering buying it. Hope this helps 👌🏻😊

It is my complete opinion that when it comes to demos I've seen throughout the years in YT, this awesome guy plays the most exciting music on the fly, combining all sorts of tones most demo guys lack, no looping over and over the same pattern which I hate, it turns me off, and most demo guys play good but they play all of that gibberish chords that make no musical sense, Rudi on the other hand and on the complete opposite side of the musical spectrum, comes up with these delightful melodies that make any piano sound brilliant and full of life. Not only is he a great demo guy but he plays as I wish I could play some day, with gusto, passion and total delight. When I hear him play, it makes me want to buy anything he's selling and gives me that special notch to keep me excited about playing music. I love your melodies but I would like to see next time, as I have been suggesting to other demo guys and who up to today, have not listened to any of my suggestions and keep playing the same gibberish, jazzy, looping and boring stuff and as soon as a new product is being demo, as soon as they start playing, I simply move to another video hoping to hear something else, which in turn, misses the opportunity of presenting the product successfully. You demo guys need to understand that it is not only about what the instrument can do, but if it doesn't "make music", even if it throws fireworks as it plays, IT DOESN'T INTEREST ANYONE. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? IT IS ABOUT THE MUSIC!!! You've got to not only play songs that are popular, yes, actual songs like Elton John, Sting songs, Old popular R&B, etc... and show us in one video how to make a complete song from drums and bass to melody and winds, But we want to hear the music that we all love, not your gibberish chords and runs, that makes sense ONLY TO YOU, NOT US! To hear the next demo guy do some short runs of all types of popular and liked music and then show us how to bring a COMPLETE SONG TO LIFE on that new keyboard, Well... That would be something special to watch and hear and make us want to do the same. Isn't that the reason everyone buys a piano? Real Songs!!! Thanks Rudi!

I bought a portable Clavinova back in the 90's (pf P-100, which I think is the ONLY portable Clavinova they ever made), and to this day I've not heard a single digital piano or soft synth that compares to its sound quality. On stage, I get people complimenting the sound ALL the time - every single time I'm out playing. So if this thing has real Clavinova sound in a portable package, GET ONE if you plan to play on stage. I can say from my own personal experience that no other manufacturer has a better, more authentic piano experience than what you'd get with this.

A bit of a feedback. I noticed most product reviews do not use classical music to demo piano sounds. And a lot of people learn to play and continue to learn classical music. So is my observation correct in that Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Gershwin, and Rachmaninov painted classical music into a corner so to speak, and this is where we are now; playing piano for fun and enjoyment, leaving frustration at the corner of the room.

I am not a retailer nor work for Yamaha or any other brand. I have tried and owned other DPs in this category. The P 515 is the best. Bad reviews are from people who do not know how to adjust the voice settings. I mostly use it's Classical / Bosendorf mode. The factory setting does not do justice to it. Use the function button to crank the volume to it's max 127, brightness up to your taste and (light 2) touch sensitivity from preset 64, I am using 76. This will already turn the sound from water to wine. Every adjustment done under "function" will be memorized after turning the piano off, but you have to enable this capability. See page 105 from the manual. Under the "piano room" button some settings are also memorized. I also set my Eq with -5 bass, +6 mid, +4 treble. If you don't like this DP, you will not like any other.

I have an FP-90 that I've had for over a year now. I was very hopeful at first, however I don't think I can live with the piano sound any longer. It has fantstic touch and control, but although it's excellent in the bass, it's just ok in the mid-range, and unacceptable in the treble. If the mid-range and treble were as realistic as the bass is I'd be ecstatic. I thought adding external speakers would help and I've got a pair of Klipsch speakers and subwoofer that are very good and helped, but not enough. I'm looking to get rid of it and hope something like the p-515 will be better, but haven't heard it yet (hearing online demos does absolutely nothing for you to judge how any of this digital pianos are going to sound when you actually play them!).

I had the same issue as you with the FP90. I purchased the Yamaha p255 after a year and it was the best decision I ever made. Sure, the Yamaha has its limits but that sampling is far superior. Its sound over control first and foremost for me. I gig with the p255 and it's actually beautiful in a crowd. The p515 is surely even better and I'm pondering on upgrading to it only my p255 is already excellent. I use Garritan CFX for recording and the onboard sounds of the P255 for pleasure and gigging. No brainer to switch if you ask me. The FP90 tries hard but I found myself obsessing with messing with the sounds and the Roland app to get that juicy, crisp grand piano and Yamaha was the solution. That's also after being disappointed with Kawai and Kord previously.

@@paulfaganpianist Yeh I've been toying with buying a P255 for a while and now the P515 - already own a CP4. Here' are my thoughts: CP4 - great gigging piano in a band situation, but not so great for solo/duo/trio work. Why - the lack of string resonance on the CP4 makes it sound too dry / artifical. You can get the notes but can't really stroke the sound (metaphorically). OK nothing compares with a real piano but... So I read the specs of the CP88 with interest -- and guess what NO STRING RESONANCE. Otherwise I would have probably upgraded. What I love about the CP4. 1. It's weight :) 2) The one touch compression button (great for getting solos to cut through in a band situation), and 3) the hands on 5 band graphic EQ -- you would be surprised at how often I tweak that a little during gigs - and the sound during soundcheck is never the same as when a room fills. And I don't want to be diving into menus!!! That said I shall probably go at the CP88 -- since there is more analogue control over stuff (wurly tremolo depth etc). So I went to try other Digitals to overcome the lack of string resonance on the CP4. Ended up with a Kawai ES8. Nice piano -- the 'faux' escapement action is not as good as some people say - there's a slightly unnatural bounce to it - certainly not as good as the top of the range Kawai action (which is superb). BUT -- and I only discover this after about 2 weeks -- Kawai for some unknown reason decide that the master volume slider will not control the levels on the line-out jack -- so that pretty much stops it being a gigging piano in anything other than a solo / duo setting. OK real pianos don't have a slider volume control - lol - but they have about 500% more dynamic range than a digital. So the ES8 has rarely seen service in gigs. It is also a tad heavy 22kg. Oh by the way I have tried amping it via the headphone socket (which does respond to the vol slider but clearly has mismatched impedance -- it doesn't sound great but it does work). So the P255 -- well I nearly bought instead of the ES8 -- but the string resonance was not as good - I preferred the ES8 sound. But it had nice features for live work 3 band graphic (prob OK - the 5 band on the CP4 is fantastic!!), and a sound focus button etc. Also it only had a 2sensor keyboard vs the Kawai triple sensor. So I was hoping for great things from the 515, which I'd be looking at for a small combo keyboard, but. 1. Weight -- back to 22kg from 17kg (the P255 is 17kg and the CP4) -- OK with a wheeled case I could just about live with this. 2. Stupid Yamaha -- 1 the sound focus button and EQ requires access to menus -- and 2 key depresses -- so not that great for live work where dedicated sliders / buttons are really useful. In fact the Kawai doesn't have these and it is a pain to get the EQ set up right before a gig. That said I'm sure the 515 is a great piano -- but I'm currently toying with a P255 (if I can still get one). I will sell the ES8 then as the lack of line-out control renders it near useless in a live situation.

Does the action really feel different/better than the P125, being that both have weighted and graded keys to replicate the feeling of an acoustic piano? I'm thinking the wooden keys on the P515 are just a selling point, with no real difference in play. Furthermore, being that this model is significantly more expensive, I think the P125 is a better choice. Any opinions?

You have so many speakers on the shelf but the sound on the P515 is coming from its own onboard speakers? Also, I noted that the piano rocks when you play hard. Perhaps if you had a stable stand it won't do that.

The NWX is quite a light action - I tried it on the equivalent CLP645 - but feels good. I'm actually not sure if it's better than the CP4 which I used to own, but it must be fairly close. Good to hear the speakers are effective. I got tired of having the CP4 linked to monitors on stands - in the end the footprint of that is not far from having a console piano so defeats the object of having a slab.

Great Review! Thanks! I have a question on the organ. How does one control the volume when playing the organ voice? With piano, the touch controls the volume. But, with an organ, one traditionally has a swell pedal. I suspect one does not control the volume while playing other than turning the volume knob up and down. A swell pedal would be a nice accessory.

Hi Rudi, just a quick question - I assume the USB midi interface also provides power to keep an iPad charged up when it's in use, are you able to confirm whether this is the case? And really great review thanks Rudi, after seeing your review/demo this looks like the instrument I will buy. Have been considering other digital pianos for a while and there was always one or two little things that were compromises, but this looks perfect for me. Can't wait until it's available in the real world. Thanks!

FYI the USB host port on the back of the P515 does NOT charge your ipad (probably because the USB standard calls for the host (in this case the ipad) to provide power to the downstream device). However, it's still a pretty cool feature: when connected to the ipad via USB the P515 sends midi data to the iPad allowing you to play all the garage band instruments via the p515 *and* the ipad sends digital audio back to the p515 so all ipad sounds play via the p515's speakers with zero delay (unlike bluetooth). All just works by default without changing any settings. However, you can use the P515 function menu to customise the MIDI send and receive channels and also turn local control on/off if you want to shut off local sounds and only hear the iPad garage band sounds. Pretty cool.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Yamaha have done a fantastic job with this piano, but I ended up buying the Kawai ES8 and I’ll tell yu why ... I have Asperger’s syndrome which will cause me to get really distracted on certain things, often things that are not necessarily that important. I indeed have an interest for composition and Jazz and want to develop those skills to become more employable as a musician. However I’m currently studying piano at a conservatoire which means I’m spending long hours practising repertoire I need to learn for my next few lessons. I believe there’s a time anda place for track sequencers definitely especially if I find myself composing more regularly. However I have observed that this is a big distraction for pianists who want to currently be inspired with learning repertoire and preparing for recitals through their studies. I have owned Yamaha PSR E413 before with a 6 track built in sequencer, which obviously was useful for composition, but the problem was when I was assigned piano repertoire to learn and practise for the next lessons, I got so distracted on that one idea about the sequencer that I didn’t think about anything else ... then when I got to the lesson I didn’t feel good about myself at all and I had to admit to my teacher the reasons for having not practiced :p :p :p ... I think a lot of people are dedicating themselves to a certain area of creativity like gigging and composition which is fine, but the classical repertoire for piano is so diverse and you can just learn so much about who you are I don’t feel like giving my time up to stop studying the repertoire, both for inspiration for ideas and also for further artistic development🎹❤️🥰🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶

Gonna mention some minor complaints here since this video seems to focus exclusively on the positive: On my P515 the NWX action is a bit uneven - with some keys not springing back as strongly as others (after only a couple of weeks of use). In particular my middle F# is bad enough that I'm getting my P515 swapped out for a new one next week. Maybe I just got unlucky with a one-off dud that slipped through quality control. We'll see... If you turn the reverb depth above 10% you get a very unnatural sounding 'fizz' with every mid-to-high note. It sounds terrible; As if the reverb is being incorrectly applied to the treble causing spurious resonance. It's particularly audible from the speakers but also via the headphones. I'm not a reverb expert so not sure if this is a common problem with digital reverbs - but it makes the reverb basically unusable above 10% - so no drowning your piano in reverb for that cathedral effect. The P515 front panel buttons are kinda cheap feeling. The buttons on my old Yamaha P80 were better quality - individually moulded rubber buttons - whereas the P515 buttons are all the same cheap-feeling shinny black plastic. Also the blue indicator leds above each button bleed across to the neighbouring buttons and appear to be pulsed on and off so when you cast your eyes across them they leave dots on your vision which can be distracting if you're playing in a dim environment. So an option to turn off the display and LEDs would be nice. (They could automatically come on again for 10 secs when you touch any button). I use a piece of black cloth laid across the control panel when I'm playing to block the distracting flickering LEDs. Bizarrely the P515 off button is unresponsive: Sometimes you have to press it twice or hold it down for a second to turn the thing off - which is kinda annoying. The user interface for the P515 sequencer seems very complicated compared to previous Yamaha's I've used - eg. recording and overlaying left and right hand parts was a breeze on the P80 - just press record and track together and start playing. To do the same thing on the P515 you have to go thru multiple dialogs on the LCD screen - and for some reason it's very difficult to get it to playback the previous track when you want to overlay another track. (Maybe some of this complexity is unavoidable since it has a much more sophisticated 16 track sequencer than the 2-track P80). It would be nice if there was an extra button to access the XG sounds - instead you have to hold down 'function' and 'others' at the same time then use the arrow keys to select voice. (I'm assuming the XG voices were a late addition to the spec hence no dedicated button). In all other respects it's a great piano and I'm very happy with the sounds (apart from the reverb) and action (apart from the sticky keys)

The one second power off delay is intentional, there is nothing worse than turning off your piano by accident in the middle of a gig.
@brickmissing8295
@brickmissing8295 5 жыл бұрын
MayContainJoe If so it's a very annoying feature. The on/off button is on its own to the left of the volume slider so pretty unlikely to be hit accidentally. The requirement for a 1 second press is worsened by the slowness of the turn-off once it does begin: it takes a full 4 seconds from the start of a press before the lights turn off - most of which time appears to be spent doing a completely lame unnecessary fade on the main display. So they've made something every user does every day really annoying - just to reduce the risk of an already very rare event? Just all round bad firmware design.
@MayContainJoe
@MayContainJoe 5 жыл бұрын
Most people at home just leave the piano and it turns itself off after 5-120 minutes (by default 30). So I guess it's not a big deal. I accidentally turned off my no-display digital many times, when it was already on. Real stage pianos don't have power buttons on the front the reason mentioned in my previous reply (usually a hard to reach mechanical switch at the back instead) and real home consoles put the power button to the side of the rightmost key, where you never hit it accidentally. But the P-515 jack of all trades has to compromise somewhere. So it's instant-on, delayed-off.

Daniel A. Yes - good external speakers will always beat the built-in speakers - but it is nice to have the sound emanating from the piano itself - and of course is more convenient and tidy to have built-in speakers. I use my P515 with a small subwoofer to fill out the low end. Works great so I haven't felt the need to add external speakers.

The P515 internal speakers are fine for mid range and high notes - but they don't produce much bass - so on their own they produce a rather tinny light-weight sound. Adding an external subwoofer to handle the bass produces a big improvement. This doesn't need to be an expensive unit - I'm using an ancient Yamaha YST-MSW10 sub and it sounds great with the P515.
