Strange that it would not update when connected to the internet, this makes me think that the update has been badly compiled leaving a folder that stopped the update from starting. Not everyone has the knowledge to check the update after it has been unziped for rouge folders. A classic case of technology that is not user friendly.

I had one device that was extremely picky and wouldn't accept any of the USB sticks I had to hand, regardless of size, nor how they were formatted. After much hair-pulling, I had to get a little creative! The very last device I had left to try was a DSC from 2004, so I loaded the update file onto the camera's internal memory (like you do!), connected it, and set it to file transfer mode. Well, wouldn't you know it! 🤯

I had a similar problem on a RX-A830. I ended using an older USB stick after reading an article about it. Apparently it was a known issue with some usb sticks. My other reciever completely failed and now says DSP failure. From what I understand it's either a memory failure or a classic DSP BGA my need re-flowing. They started failing just after warranty as usual. Boards are conveniently no longer available. Don't think I'd ever bother with Yamaha again to be honest.

Well done, i was thinking the pen needed to be zeroed and formatted in the simple fat 16 file system using dos. (no extra crap like windows writes without asking). Pc bios updates have been a pig at times, they dont state the exact format.
@RectifiedMetals2 жыл бұрын
Network updates? What are those? Seems to navigate to a closed portal after warranties are gone. USB seems to be the way to go for almost anything in my experience. Yes better to format the stick before copying firmware. Windows, winzip, or even 7zip adds folders, so files, whatever the extension the target device is looking for needs to be on the root of the USB. We could go back to rs232, which I would prefer, but I’m old.

I wouldn't know. This is not my unit. They typically only release updates to correct defects that are discovered while the unit is in production. Once production ends and the warranty of the last to roll off the line expires they stop support. If some other manufacture introduces an incomparable device they usually will not fix it and blame the other company.

For future reference, this is how ALL USB firmware updates work: a .BIN file alone in the top level folder. And, all Windows "unzip" utilities always do the wrong thing (unzipping to a folder) for updating purposes. It has been this way since MSDOS 3.0 days. Updating your PC's BIOS works this way. Updating your car's head unit works this way. Updating receivers works this way. The process is very clearly documented on every vendor's web site.

I didn't look at the files on the USB stick supplied by the owner that had tried to do it. Once I looked at the USB stick i found files on it that were write protected so a fresh format changing from fat33 to fat16 nuked those. Unzip and if course the unzip program puts the sub folder in that needs deleting.

This is mostly a tip for older devices, but try formatting the memory stick as FAT32 instead of ExFAT. Unless it's a 2GB memory stick, you'll need a third party utility to do it.
@Watcher32232 жыл бұрын
That's a good tip. There are many devices that don't work too well with USB drives that aren't formatted FAT32, USB drives that are too large, etc. The PlayStation 3 is a good example: not compatible with ExFAT. The USB drive must be formatted FAT32.
@dlarge65022 жыл бұрын

the general rules are the flash drive must be fat32 formatted and below 8GB in size and the update file be extracted from the zip into the root. Thats all I can think of.

@speed_rider3622 жыл бұрын
@@12voltvids Yeah, that could happen. For fat32 you need a special module in firmware to support it. And if due to space limitations of the ROM chip this module is not present, you can update it only using fat16. Fat16 is supported out of the box on almost every machine. When I am updating any consumer electronics, I always use a separate UPS battery system. This way the power cannot go out.

Mine unzipped the folder to the USB. I think you or the guy then copied it from the folder to the root so that it had both. It depends on what software you use in order to determine the outcome. Winzip, 7z, winrar all act differently.
@12voltvids2 жыл бұрын
When I got the thumb drive it had the file and a folder in the root as well as the readyboost crap that windows puts on it. I formatted and unzipped with 7zip and it put the folder in and the file in the root, so folder deleted.
@VoltageGoat2 жыл бұрын
@@12voltvids I agree with you. Just confirming, kinda. Windows default extractor and winzip will unzip just the file (no folder) to where you want it. 7z and winrar will by default extract to a folder. Just under the download link was the install manual. step 1 - format a usb thumbdrive and make sure it is blank. last step says to just copy the file to the usb. :) Basically, I think your friend extracted to a folder and then copied the file from the folder to the root which is why there was two copies. Or, he extracted to a folder and then you extracted directly to the root again which would have made the file twice. In any case, good job in getting it done. I have no idea why the network try failed.

Well it is supposed to update over wi-fi but it wouldn't at the customer's house, so the system integrator guy took it to his house and tried to update it at his house and it also failed. He then went on the internet and got the update file and put it on USB stick and had the instructions printed out on how to do it and it failed. He called me I tried to walk him through it over the phone and he couldn't get it to work. He brought it to me I tried to update from the stick that he brought me and it would not update, I plugged it into my ethernet connection and it would not update. I then went and downloaded a new copy, reformatted the USB stick in fat 16 and loaded the new file onto the USB stick. When it extracted I found a folder in the route along with the bin file. I deleted that folder and everything worked. A few people have been critical but I did not check the USB stick before attempting to update because my system integrator guy that I know and incidentally I work with him for 20 years at the shop, told me that the files were correct and he had contacted one of the other guys that I worked with at the shop before contacting me.

@gorak90002 жыл бұрын
typically things these days don't have that problem anymore. Most things that use modern practices will have 3 images on them, a dedicated bootloader / firmware update image that all it does is perform firmware updates, and it itself is not updated, a primary firmware image, and a backup firmware image. All the images have CRC checksums and they are verified before an attempt is made to boot from that image. Almost everything uses u-boot these days for the lowest level bootloader and firmware updating, and not the "roll-your-own-from-scratch" haphazard way they used to do it. Even if the power goes out in the middle of an update, u-boot will detect the image is bad (CRC doesn't match), and it will either boot the backup image, or prompt you to do the update again. Flash is so dirt cheap these days, there's no reason not to structure firmware in this manor, not to mention of how many returns and replacements it saves the company.
