Yamaha R1 98 first start for 3 years

Starting a Yamaha R1 98 after a 3 year lay-up. I poured some oil in the plug holes to lubricate the rings which explains the smoke. The dash is playing up and the clutch is stuck but thats part of the fun.

Yes, it was only smoking as I poured oil in the bores to prevent a dry start as it had stood for a few years.

I got it running pretty well and it would pull wheelies on the power at 100mph. The errors were due to the block connector being corroded. the smoke was because I put fresh oil down the spark plug holes to lubricate the bores for its first turn over in case it was a little dry. I put a brand spanking new tank on it and it looked amazing. Unfortunately it was stolen about a year ago. I miss that bike.

Oh and I found the temp sender connector to be corroded too giving off all sorts of temp readings. All sorted now :) The best bit of playing with the bike was finding the clutch actuating arm wasnt meshing correctly as someone had obviously had the cover off but not replaced it correctly. Good job I like playing mechanic.

i started mine after nearly 3 years didnt blow nuffn like that tho maybe as i used fresh fuel and clean oil, my bike was together also so that was a plus also my tacho works lol go the 98 gota love em

Always check for mice and nest in airbox before starting if you let a bike sit that long or even over winter

Cheers MrLeeski. I know about the fault as I have a manual & have trawled the forums but didnt when I started it up. Its just the usual suspect of the main dash block connector as the wires had burned/ corroded and been spliced back together using a generic electrical straight block connector. For this vid I replaced the connector with bull-nose connectors but obviously didnt clamp them right as it resulted in the dash error. All sorted now.

This 4xv model r1 was one of the best looking bikes ever made but they are prone to gearbox trouble crank failure and soft engines i think the fireblade of that era had much stronger reliable engine even tho it lacked the poke

So i saw you were still replying to this video, very cool. I own a R1 1998 since about a year and I would love to remove the exup system. Can't vind any tutorials on this with the 1998 edition. Do you perhaps still know where you got the explanation from? Thanks in advance!

You could replace the whole exhaust system with a race pipe but to be honest, why do you want to remove the exup? If you remove it you will effect the low speed running of the bike and effect fueling. I am pretty sure I read a long time ago it makes the low speed very lumpy. Best advice is to just keep it well serviced and keep it in place. Check out the R1forum.com. Lots of good info.

J RC Ahhh, will have a look on those forums, thanks. Went on and googled but thought it gave more power in the lower rpms. Guess I was wrong. Will change sparkplugs soon as I think that has to be done lol. Thanks for replying!

the code 7 on rev counter normally means exup valve or exup motor, you said it was a corroded cnnector which one was it

Left hand side main block connector. Cant remember which pins but its a very common issue and there are loads of threads on forums covering it. If you have the error its a good time to strip the exup valve out and lubricate the exup cables too as they do stick and that can cause the error. Use caution removing the bolts for the exup valve cover as they snap easily. If a bolt is seized, use a gas torch and heat the area up. Worked a treat for me. I replaced all the bolts with stainless and didnt have a problem again servicing it.

If you have gone over everything - i.e not in gear, all fuses etc, it has fuel & spark and it still wont fire, do a compression check as it could have blown a piston ring.

Nope, just a squirt of oil down the plug holes and let it soak in case a ring was stuck. If your worried you can turn it over by hand first to get oil up there but these engines are pretty solid.

Check the big white connector on left side by headlights for corrosion. then tell me what rpm error you have and I will try to help

I have a 04 r1 sitting for too year had water in the fuel tank I clean out and got it started I looked at the oil and found water in it i change the oil and filter now I let it run and it smokes what did you do to fix that to urs

+Sinister13 Cruz The smoke was just oil I put down the sparkplug holes. If yours has been sitting its probably just water from the tank / condensation from being cold. You need to ride it for 20+ miles getting it hot and with a fresh tank of fuel. Then if it still smokes it could be coolant but I doubt that.

Had the carbs clogged after a 3 year stand still? I am taking mine to mechanic as does strange sound at idle and turns off. I am hoping it's simply carbs being clogged since not been used for a few years

Post up a video? If its been stood for years I assume you drained the tank and added fresh fuel?
