3:38 if the internet commenters who say "we want the R1" actually bought an R1, the R1 wouldn't be retired. It's not impossible to make the R1 pass emissions. Other manufacturers have done it for their 1000cc sportsbikes. Yamaha themselves will continue selling the MT10, so the CP4 will get a euro5+ variant. If Yamaha is retiring the R1, it's because it doesn't sell enough. So they're stopping development and as a result, it falls short of the newest regulations. Whereas they think the R9 will sell enough to cover the (significantly bigger) investment to design a brand new bike. Moral of the story: you vote with your wallet. If you're not buying 200bhp-$20k sportsbikes for the street, aren't you proving Yamaha's point that we don't need them ?

@PSP55593 ай бұрын
I dont understand any of the hate. The R9 is a brilliant move from Yamaha. The R6 was the benchmark for supersport performance in its final form. When Yamaha announced that it was to be discontinued, they sent shockwaves through the sport bike community. How could the best be so easily put to rest? Ever since then, the class has been growing on paper, but dying in spirit. None of these new 60 to 80 hp sport bikes are true supersports; i.e. daytona 660, GSX8R, R7. You cant reach a pinnacle of performance, then go back 3 levels and call it the same class. For the R9 to come out, cheaper than the R6 used to MSRP for, and (even crazier) cheaper than used R6’s of the last generation, while also having similar to better performance/features/technology is an incredible feat, and I think if Yamaha designed the core performance characteristics of the R9 right, people will quickly see it for what it is and buy them. If bigger engines with the same performance is what it takes to counter emissions regulations, so be it. If sticking excessive amounts of tech on bikes like 9 level Traction Control Systems and MotoGP derived winglets is what it takes to remain relevant in the market, so be it. If unification of engine configurations across platforms is what it takes to bring cost down, then great! thats more money in our pockets. But the R9 to me is more than just a smart business move. If it’s any good, I think in history it’ll mark the revival of the spirit of the supersport class. (and that’s coming from someone who currently owns a Triumph, Ducati, and a Suzuki)
@benschofield75652 ай бұрын
Looks fantastic. Seems like a bit of a remedy for the bloated 20K+ bikes. Can't see the Triumph being anything other than a Tiger Sport, but whatever it is, it will leave the door open for a Daytona 800 in a year or two.
@ApexRadius3 ай бұрын
As for Triumph, it's not clear what their new bike/platform is going to be but I wouldn't bet on it being a fully-faired R9 competitor. It's possible, especially if there are strong signs of a miraculous revival of the supersport class, but I wouldn't say it's highly likely. The Daytona 675 was one of the best supersport bikes ever made and...it didn't sell well, save for its first couple of production years. Not being a big volume manufacturer, Triumph really can't afford to put development and marketing money toward bikes that don't sell when they move a lot of Street Triples, Bonneville variants. Tigers, Tridents, and Speed/Scrambler 400s. The current Street Triple RS is very much a modern-day Daytona 675R without clip-ons and a full fairing, so they're not chasing Yamaha. Yamaha is chasing them with the new MT-09 (and in some sense, the R9). And by all accounts it's very good. Triumph could just add a fairing, clip-ons, and few minor tweaks to the Striple (which is basically what teams do for supersport racing) and they'd have an instant R9 competitor. But Triumph has done the math and, up until now, the market will not reward even that relatively modest investment.

Motorcycle companies are in business to make money. That's why motorcycle companies are making so many parallel twins for the riding community. Yamaha is telling their customers that they want to make more money off of the R9 than they could off of the R1. Not very many could afford the R1 as is. The cost of making one compliant with Euro 5 would just ad more costs on an already expensive bike. So making a bike that cost less will sell more, so they think. That remains to be seen. The market is a roulette wheel. It's all a gamble. Manufacturing motorcycles is just a side venture for Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki. So they can afford to take risks.

The enviromental regulations are getting more strict and we'll be seeing a transition to twins and triples just because that's the easiest and cheapest way to comply with the HC emission regulations. So far Honda is the ONLY manufacturer who has been able to build an 1000cc four cylinder engine that's Euro 5+ compliant. Within next two years we'll be seeing more smaller displacement motorcycles and as those motorcycles slowly replace the motorcycles in WSBK and as MotoGP adopts the 850cc engines in 2027, the development of these smaller bikes will also pick up in pace. These smaller bikes like R9 will sell in the future. The old saying "Win on sunday, sell on monday" is still very relevant today.

First, as another poster mentioned the R9 is primarily meant to replace the R6, not the R1 (although surely some liter-class riders/aspiring liter-class riders will move to the R9 because it hits a nice sweet spot for road use). If Yamaha intends to stay in WSB, BSB, MotoAmerica, AJRRC (Japan) and other national racing series, there will be an R1 or something equivalent. It just won't be available as a road bike in some markets (in the US, we're getting the newly/lightly revised, road legal R1). And I doubt that Yamaha intends to leave superbike racing anytime soon. These days, "true" sportbikes mostly exist as halo bikes and for race homologation, not big sales. The R9 will race in WSS, BSS, MotoAmerica Superport, etc. against Panagale V2s, GSX-R 750s/600s, ZX-6Rs, CBR-600RRs, and faired Street Triple 765 RSs. True race-replica sportbikes haven't sold well in well over a decade and liter-class ones tend to be very expensive. They're now mostly the domain of the premium European brands llike Ducati, BMW, Aprilia, etc. The market is a small and rarefied, making it far less attractive for more mainstream manufacturers. They're just not going to spend a lot of development and regulatory requirement money for low-volume production versions of these bikes that they have to sell at competitive prices. Not to mention, 200+ HP superbikes are ridiculous overkill on the road and expensive to own and run, especially for younger people.

Gawd people the R1 is already illegal to sell in Europe, it will be illegal to sell in America in a few years... the R7 replaced the R6, the R9 is replacing the R1 and the government doesn't care if that upsets the R1 fanboys.
@ApexRadius3 ай бұрын
@@JoeStanek-vu7rl The R1 doesn't have to be illegal to sell in Europe as a road bike. It's just that Yamaha (wisely) decided its potential sales are not worth the investment in continual compliance with emissions/regulatory standards. Maybe this is splitting hairs, but The R7 wasn't really a replacement for the R6. The R7 is very different from an R6 and not meant to fill the same place in the market. It's relatively inexpensive and more approachable for newer riders and was even more heavily based on the MT-07 (which is a near-entry-level bike) than the R9 is based on an MT-09. The R6 was the cutting-edge hardcore supersport. The R9 is the bike that's meant to more closely replace the R6, as it will in supersport racing. The R1 really has no direct replacement at this time. It will simply not exist as a road bike in many markets. But I'd agree that its days as a road bike in the US are probably numbered, as well.
