Many thanks. I will check out my receiver that died yesterday. Hopefully one of these common faults will be the cause and can be remedied. You may have just saved me a few hundred bucks.

Just picked one of these up for a few bucks... For a lower-line unit, it's got impressive build quality and sound, from the days when the stereo market was still quite competitive. Everything seems to function, but when I open it up to dust the board, I may preemptively address the design issues you noted. Many thanks.

@Jamafia It's a Hakko 808. You can find them at electronics places, but I got mine on Ebay.

@batterymaker I think some of the heat was from resistance in the joint itself, but still...

@JeffN727 Most likely the hum was a ground issue. I'll have to try the phono input some time, and see if it still does it.

@66maldonado I got mine on Ebay. I think they are just called "wire unwrapping tool". There are different sizes to match the posts. I think the Marantz used the larger of the two that I had.

Very nicely done repair and video. It is amazing how flimsy the construction is. That heat zinc almost might as well not been there for that transistor. Also amazing that it is still good!

This video is truly awesome, I have the same unit similar problem however mine does not "click" upon startup. I measured resistance across the transformer primary leads and it is an open circuit. Also, I get 122V at the primary leads with power switch on, and 120V at leads with power switch off... I think the switch shorted which in turn left the transformer power on all the time, and burned out the transformer. Any tips would be appreciated!

My stereo sound system works fine but after some time the speakers make a loud staticy noise. I canot reduce this sound if i lower the speaker volume, even if i turn down volume the sound is still loud as if the speakers are on full volume with a staticy sound. the only way i can turn off the sound is by turning off the system. and when the static sound comes i dont hear the sound of the music or radio i'm playing. do i have a problem with the stereo reciever or the speakers? sonyX0-950w. thnx

The 4913 should actually work. I think it's just rated to handle more voltage when available. Did you use thermal paste between the IC and the heatsink? If you replace it again, look for DC voltage at the speaker terminals before connecting speakers. If there is more than a few mV, something is still wrong. Also any DC voltage on the signal inputs of the IC (pins 1 and 16) will be passed to the output. Make sure the caps are good.

I love your videos, I recently got the vintage audio bug and picked up a sansui g-5700 and a pioneer sx 750 . I would like the experience and reward of doing it my self. I have done pc repair and repair since I was 18 (now 36). I don't really have any electronics back ground but I am highly interested in learning; where or what would be the best approach? Classes, books, start tinkering, or all of the above?

Do not force the relay, it is there to protect your speakers. But I guess it's too late for that. And your output IC is probably bad. The original output IC is an STK-4873. Did you install an STK-4913 in its place?

@poopooGarret Ya, I was surprised that it had a cutoff relay, considering it's only 15 watts per channel or so. If you want to toast some speakers you need a ratty PA amp with about 100W or so. Normally I try to sell old speakers that I can't use, but I have a pair that are genuine crap that came out of some old Realistic boxes. I'm gonna rebuild them with new speakers since the boxes are really sturdy, and the old woofers are gonna get "stress tested" some day LOL.

I bought the yamaha rx 300 u over 25 years ago. It was working fine till a month ago when the aux input seemed to produce distorted sound. I am now reconnecting my speakers with new wire to see if this helps. If not, I'll buy a new receiver. 25 years of trouble free use is pretty good anyway.

Hey Max I caught a split sec of your new "Hot Powered Solder Sucker!" LOL! I think I seen that its was a Hacko, (Right?) Were did you get the best price at? And do you have any issues with it? Does it get hot enough for something like "replacing power transformers" in a home surround sound receiver? And what kind of vacuum pump does it have? (maybe something along the lines of how the hot air gun blower works?) You know max I just realized something it would be cool to have a hot air soldering gun and a hot solder sucker all in one just by reversing the fan? Cool!
