The Yamaha P121 is nearly identical to the P125, the only difference being that the 121 has less keys than the 125. Not too many people talk about the 121, and I feel that it probably doesn't sell as well as the 125, either. But how detrimental is the lack of keys? Does it dramatically hurt the value of the P121 as a serious instrument? Or does it actually help, making the instrument smaller, lighter, and more compact? Let's find out!

I bought a P121 about 7 months ago and I absolutely love it, it's awesome. I travel for work and take it with me when I go. Its lighter and smaller because it has 73 keys. Recently my 13 yr old daughter took a liking to it and I never got it back so I'm trying to get another one. Sadly to say I can not find one, it's on back order and has been for a very long time. Every site and every music store has it on back order. This thing is so popular and great it's out of stock everywhere. Its funny because in the caption he said the P121 doesn't sell as well as the P125.....the P125 you can buy anywhere at any time, but the P121 is out of stock and has been on back order for months....if you're looking for a high quality compact keyboard nothing is better.

Thank you for this video. I am currently travelling in a homemade RV and was given a "keyboard" to use, but hated it. The lack of response from the keys, the endless choices...would I play a marimba, a piano, clavicord, trumpet, etc. I was missing just a good piano. I actually purchased the smallest Yamaha electric piano, the 61 key NP-12. It didn't work for me...returned it after a few days. Too little volume, too few keys, virtually no keyboard feel. Then, wandering the internet looking at smaller electric piano's I saw the Yamaha P-125 covered a lot. But then stopped at your channel here, saw this video on the p-121 and am now in "Keyboard in an RV HEAVEN". I played for eight hours straight on the first day. Thank you so very much for this video. The keyboard is amazing. Still a lot more "voices" than I'll probably ever use, but man, is this a beautiful instrument. It's only 42" long, sounds amazing...lots of speakers (something else I really did not like about the NP-12...I could barely hear it...I am not deaf). I use the P121 in the RV at about 30% volume, and often use headphones. Love the included sustain pedal...it's tiny and I tape it down when I play. Might actually get the three-pedal set if I can figure out how to engineer it. The 71 keys of the P-121 are plenty. I play mostly American songbook music, so have not tried for a key that isn't included in the 71. THANK YOU. This is one happy keyboard player. The P121 It's not my 1911 Weber baby grand, I'll rate it a solid 79% on it! And with just a little RV adjustments, the keyboard is virtually available all the time...right there under the now-removable desktop.

I went shopping today and directly compared the P-121 with the P-45. I instantly gravitated to the P-121 due to its superior sound quality, and ended up buying it. I sacrificed a few rarely used keys, but I don't care. I would not be satisfied with the P-45, and I am so glad I went with the P-121.

This is the piano I have always wanted since getting a P35 ages ago. 73 keys are an excellent compromise for pop music, and the cost benefit compared to a SV1 is unbelievable.

That's what I love about my P121, been using it for a year now, simply it's lighter, smaller, has the nice features from his big brother P125, but with just less keys. I don't play classical, mostly just gigs. Btw I think you forgot to mention that there's a features called octave shift where you can shift octave by pressing the "Piano" button and F0 keys and G0 keys. And you can get a extra bonus lower notes and higher notes too.

Hi James, always a great video as well. But I missed one important function, you didn't mentioned: There is with P121, different to P125, an "Octave Shift" means, you can shift the keyboard pitch up or down by octave. I've bought a 121 because my flat is not realy big, and I am happy with it. But if Yamaha will sell a 73 keys version of the 515 one day, I would buy it, because that will be more professionell.
@nusstu
@nusstu 4 жыл бұрын
You'll need the shift cuz it's 73 keys the 88 key didn't need it cuz you can access all the octaves. That's not really a feature per se.

Can you help me? I'm interested in the P121 but I want to learn classical pieces with it. I want to know if the "missing" keys are bad for some pieces. Or what classical pieces I can't play in it, since it has 73 keys. I need a portable digital piano because my father's car is small and I need to gig sometimes. The P121 is the only digital piano with 73 keys that sells in my country, and I'm afraid to make a bad decision. Thanks in advance.

@@GabrielRocha-po9fz Hi Gabriel, I'll try to help you. I'm not a professional pianist, just play for fun. Before I bought the P121 I asked the same questions. You can download the manual of the P125/121 from the Yamaha Homepage. There is a list of 50 classical piano pieces, preset in P121. Six of them need keys, they are out of the 73 keys (marked with *). But most of them you can transpose to value keys. And at least it is possible to shift an oktave up or down. That is very comfortable. I realy don't miss the missing keys. If there is a way to try the piano in a store, do that first. Hope I could help, Good luck!

@@uhan449 thank you very much! I will see the manual, and search some pieces from it to see if the P121 is nice for me. Going to store is not possible these days, but I'll wait for the opportunity to try it. Thanks again!

@Mikko Rantalainen: This does not make sense. Better you connect a tablet (Apple or Android) with P121. With the smart pianist app (free by yamaha) you can shift your keyboard up or down, just pressing one button on tablet while you 're playing. Without the app you must press two keys with two hands on the piano.

Your videos were “instrumental” in my selection. I bought the 121 2 weeks ago. I live in a townhouse where space is a premium- the white fits my decor perfectly. Thanks! One of the nice things about the Yamaha P-121 and P-125 is they have a built-in audio/usb interface so you can send MIDI or audio data to a computer. Not sure if they can do both MIDI and audio simultaneously over usb (like the Roland RD-88), but if they could it would eliminate the need for an external audio/usb interface when performing live with a vst.

Since you frequently mention using the pianos for gigs, I was wondering if you could do a video on bags or cases? I know there are a lot of options and prices. I'm just not sure I need an expensive high-end hard shell case. What should I be thinking about?

Which from your videos, we can tell and decided the direction that a buyer will like to go towards too. Thank You. / A question, for both the 121 and 125 when LINE OUT to PA will inbuilt speakers still active, and how about the headphone inputs too? If even with the LINE OUT sound out to PA, if both the inbuilt speakers and the headphone all still active, it would be the keyboard I am looking all over. Thank You once again.

I think two of these would be amazing as a digital harpsichord. The range is similar, and some baroque pices written for 2 manuals are very hard to play on one, but two make it much easier. This would be great for someone like me (who already owns an acoustic but wants to experiment a little with authentic baroque performance). Do you know of any stands that hold the keyboards in the harpsichord-like configuration?

The On-Stage KSA7500 would be a good way to add another tier to a stand - I have one of their more expensive adapters that's basically the same thing with an additional tier that can hold a laptop or sound module (I thought it would hold 3 keyboards... I have a Roland Juno 88. Keys are on the heavy side. It's not bad I actually like it. I don't, however, like the main piano sound very much. It sounds too "fake" and the dynamics are kind of off. The sustain isn't as long as I hoped. The non-piano sounds are really good. Although when it comes to electric pianos, I can't tell if they sound authentic to their actual electric piano counterparts since i'm not an expert. Basically I just like it for non-piano sounds. That's it. .. btw What's it like to have Christmas in summer?

James, interesting that you mentioned having the P80. I've still got a P80 (along with an acoustic grand, which is primarily used) - is there any reason to upgrade to a more modern digital keyboard? My understanding was the GH action in the P80 was superior to the GHS action. Not sure if there have been changes through the years to make an upgrade worthwhile.
@ThePianoforever

Honestly, the action of the P80 was very good. I gave mine to a friend but maybe I'll find another one and do a comparison video, it might be interesting. Regarding the action, mine was very, VERY loud and clunky sounding, but otherwise worked perfectly. It had some pretty good sounds on it and was very well built and reliable. The new GHS action is considerably quieter than the old GH was (at least mine), and the P125/121 is much lighter than the P80 which may be important to some. Also they have built in speakers.

About Beethoven's music: I'm not sure ALL Beethoven would be playable on this piano. For example his 31th sonata's 3rd movement goes lower and needs these extra keys (at the end of the first "Fuga"). I think and I'm pretty sure there was something from his earlier or middle period as well, but I'm not entirely sure. I have a digital piano with 76 keys, I love classical music, especially Beethoven and, well, saving money for a decent 88-key digital piano. Same problem with Chopin, of course (e.g. his Nocturne Op 48 no 1). I'm reading Beethoven's biography at the moment and I'm actually really curious when and how did he use lower notes and perhaps - I remember from somewhere - even used notes that the pianos at his time didn't have. Interesting:) But, yes, if one's not into classical music then 76 keys should be enough, indeed.

I was wondering if the size of P121’s keys is the same as the other standard pianos’? If I don’t play classical, but am only interested in animation songs, pop and the phantom of the opera (one of my favourite) would this piano have enough keys? Thanks very much!

The size of the P121's keys are the same as a standard piano. It's likely it would have enough keys for the type of music you want to play.

Is the sound I am hearing here coming through the actual keyboard speakers? I need a good sound as the gigs I go too normally don't have amplifiers/exteral speakers

There's definitely a market for smaller keyboards, the p45 just doesn't fit in my car; but for domestic use I would definitely consider the p125 over the p121
