Andrew. Have you been able to replicate the feel of Yamaha pianos with tone control and equalizer on other similar speakers, or there is some secret sauce in the Yamaha speakers?

At $8,000 per pair for the Yamaha NS-2000A, I think there is too much competition at lower prices (KEF R11 Meta mentioned in the review are about $6,500 per pair). MartinLogan Motion XT F100 are only $4,500 per pair. I don't think many people would be buying $8,000 Yamaha speakers to play low volume background music, so the fact that they excel at that is not much of a factor for most people.

I would most definitely put high on my list how good any speaker system is at low level listening!! Regardless of price!! Many audiophiles speak of this aspect when discussing a speakers strengths and weaknesses. And for that kind of money they better be good at any level!!
@Mark-rw3kw
@Mark-rw3kw 9 ай бұрын
@@Csnumber1 I will accept that low level listening is important to you and some others, but honestly I have never heard that on any audiophile forum, unless one is trying to use the speaker for normal TV viewing or watching movies. In those cases, one is best advised to use a center channel speaker that makes voices easier to hear distinctly. That's why home theater systems typically have a center speaker.

Good morning to everyone tuning in! Hope y’all are having an awesome Sunday! I do like the look of this speaker, but if it came in gloss white…. 🤤home run. I didn’t know you played piano professionally for that long. Thats awesome! My dream is to have a big enough house where I can have a grand Steinway piano. Classic, gloss black. Ugh, what a dream! That’s a great review guys and absolutely love the conversation! Especially the one about differences in how certain speakers handle certain songs as well. Lovely video! Have fun everyone today! 🎉

Total aside, a few years back I had the opportunity to play a custom, matte midnight blue Steinway in a controlled environment and OMG. It was one of the great musical experiences of my entire life. I wanted that piano SO BAD. It cost upwards of $500K but if I were RIIIICH it would be 100% worth it! As for the speakers, yes, different finishes would be nice! I would love a matte color line myself (I think I'm over gloss colors in general). Hope your weekend is going well!

Great review. Kristi's comments on sounding like being in a room with live instruments interests me and is what I'd like to have. I bought the Polk R700 and Cinema 50 from your recommendationband they are good. But when I next upgrade, what would you recommend for realistic sound? Years ago I had the British, Mordant Short's because they came closest to live performance sound at a modest budget (I was familiar with Jazz and classical concerts). Perhaps you could comment or even post a video discussing best speakers for realism vs detailed, vs etc.

Nice review! I love Yamaha, and I thought your breakdown of the character of the speakers vs the measurements was really good. I think there’s a level of artistry that designers can give speakers that veer away from neutral… and if it sounds good then 👍. It makes speakers fun rather than an analytical race to all sounds exactly the same. Also, I love the way these look

Ultimately, it gives better perspective when shopping for audio equipment. New equipments become used equipments. Ten years ago I may not be able to afford a B&W but now I could. I will tuck this review into my memory when a nice used Yamaha comes to market. Thanks for a wonderful review and a clear sense where this product sits among its competitors.

O think that you were brutally honest with the 805s, describing the compromises of any unbalanced loudspeaker (which it is, by any account). 😉 any loudspeaker that is outstanding with some recordings but barely tolerable with other recordings demand the listener to play what they like, and not what the listener/customer likes. That’s not an acceptable compromise to me at those price points (although B&W is not alone in that trend). Regarding the Yamahas, and coming as someone who actually owns Yamaha musical instruments for around 4 decades, it would be almost impossible to convince myself into buying a pair, unless it really, really impressed me on several demos. Let me be clear that there’s a lot of bias on my side while saying it, but as great as Yamaha is at making pianos, drums, synths, bass guitars and other instruments, I never felt that loudspeaker design was ever one of their stronger points (the same way that most of their instruments are not recorded with Yamaha microphones. They had a foot in some studios with the NS-10s, but not because it was a great sounding studio monitor. Quite the opposite, they were so far from neutral that many said “if a mix sound good on these, it will sound good anywhere” - not a huge complement by any stretch of imagination. 😀 I’m sure many will disagree with me (and others agree) on that perception of Yamaha as a “high end” loudspeaker manufacturer (and this one isn’t that cheap). The way it looks doesn’t feel particularly attractive to me, which certainly isn’t the case with many other loudspeakers at that price range. On another note, I would be concerned about its resale value over time, since upgrading (or changing) gear is not that uncommon with people that put a lot of money on this hobby. Yes, the classic totl 3 way Yamahas and the NS-10s had a resurgence and become an icon for some people, so the prices went (and are) really high. But they both became an icon (like the JBL L100 did), and some visual cues are certainly part of the reason, while these look very similar to what many brands are making for quite a long time. B&W was masterful at understanding it, and I feel that KEF has been following their own path on creating slim loudspeakers with their UniQ design (I will leave the Focal Utopia and Wilson audio on another level, but they also did it in their market segment). There’s always some fans of the brand which will buy the whole system from Yamaha, including the speakers. But I don’t believe that they’ll be able to upset any of the loudspeaker manufacturers who are actually selling more units at these price points. Just by taking a look at their motorcycle business, they were always competing with the other Japanese manufacturers, but when you have someone who wants to buy something like an BMW or Ducati, and has the means to do it, selling any Yamaha is almost impossible - no matter how good Yamaha is at making motorcycles and engines. 😉 I guess these loudspeakers would need to be really special on how they sound to compensate for all they are lacking on several fronts, brand awareness (as a higher end loudspeaker manufacturer) included. While it makes all sense for the marketing people to use the musical instruments card, anyone who’s been awake on any of these decades will know that an instrument is very different from a microphone used to capture its sound, and that loudspeakers are precisely on the other end of the microphone (their job is the exact opposite). Instruments create their own sound, while loudspeakers usually try to translate electrical signals into sound, without adding too much of their own as possible (within several constrains). This is only my humble opinion, of course. 😉

Hmm. A more direct comparison with the D4 would be the Yamaha NS-3000. That said, I'm liking the new speakers from Yamaha. I think the 3000 and 5000 are not easily acceptable by mainstream, but the 2000As, 800As and 600As are something that's quintessentially yamaha, but more mainstream and versatile, I feel. And they look fantastic too.

I have not heard this model of speaker but certainly would trust Andrews experience on it if I were in the market for a pair. What I WILL say is based on some experience with this brand. In the early 90's I did a short stint selling Hi-Fi gear at a small chain shop in the northeast. Many of the NSA series speakers at every price point were pleasant sounding and bargain priced when compared to other competing brands. As for their electronics, their amplifiers (to include integrated or receiver) were the ONLY brand I knew of that incorporated protection circuitry that would simply shut down the amplifier if speaker terminals were short-circuited. Musical detail ALWAYS went to to toe with any manufacturer of same or higher price. (up to 20% more) Knowing this, when shopping for a flute for my sweetheart at Christmas, Yamaha was an easy choice. Lastly, in addition to Hi-Fi, I'm passionate about motorsports: dirt-biking snowmobiling etc. I own and have repaired/restored several of these bulletproof, fine performing machines. The secret to me is that Yamaha are "MASTERS of MATERIALS", be it wood or metals. I tell my friends and other enthusiasts often, " if Yamaha made dental floss, I'd buy it!"

Years ago, Yamaha, and I mean like 20 years at least, introduced the NS-777, and NS-555 towers. No high end Audio store carried them, but they were available at Best Buy. The 777’s footprint was just too large for my space so I opted for the little brothers…the 555’s at an astonishing $399.00 for the pair!! Housed in a real wood cabinet, with a Black Lacquer laminate, to this day, are some of the finest sounding speakers I’ve ever owned. They are still available believe it or not, but the price for one is what I paid for the pair, as are the 777’s, at less than 900.00 bucks for the pair. Yeah, nine hundred bucks. Now, as you’ve heard me mention before, I own the now out of print original KLH Kendalls, which dig a bit deeper, are more sensitive and the midrange is more true to life than those 555’s. I heard the Yamaha NS2000a’ at a retailer who owned a pair and brought them in to compare. “Lifelike” is the first impression I had. Unlike the Focals….all of them, their high end response wasn’t as “piercing”, yet lending an edge to finger swipes on conga drums, and snares and guitar plucks that, when eyes closed(something I do whenever I audition any gear), was as close to lifelike as those big Lascalas or maybe a bit better. Of course the scaling wasn’t as impactful. Now, I mention my Kendall’s, because at under $1500, new, they are my reference against any other speakers I listen to. There really isn’t anything the don’t do well, as Jay Lee said in his comprehensive review. Fantastic when listening at low levels, very deep bass reaching below 30hz, and a midrange that is as sweet as a new born babies breath and a soundstage that’s huge, all in as small a footprint as full range tower could be….it’s a shame you never got the chance to hear them. And they make many loudspeaker systems really have to step up to warrant the, most often times, wide divide in price. I will always ask…but do they sound 5, 6, 7, 10 thousand bucks better…and 90% of the time the answer is no…and often it’s not even close to warranting the difference in cost. Do most “Look” more impressive, prettier…you bet they do, but I like the unassuming looks in speakers like the Kendall and the NS2000a. The both are more focused on the musical presentation than the statement made by an esoteric housing. Why Yamaha loudspeakers, especially their higher end offerings have gone under the wire is beyond me. Because from what I heard, the NS2000a’s unique sound signature makes them worth the price bump. One of the very few I’d pay the asking price for, when a pair of $1499.00 loudspeakers, that in my opinion were far over manufactured for far too little money, can….or could be had for so little. What I love about my Kendall’s is they are so neutral and well balanced. These surprisingly surpass the Kendall’s in every way except Bass extension. But the Bass presented by the NS2’s is so lovely and like the Kendall’s, extremely well controlled. The Klipsch Lascala, are ones that the asking price is well warranted and are unlike anything else in their “oh my god I’m here at the concert” presentation! In my olde age, my ears are still as good as they ever were, my eyes not so much. So I’m very critical…..if your asking big money (at least to me), you better bring something special to the table…or you’re just another pretty “box”. The Yamaha NS2000a are not just another pretty box. They deliver and keep on delivering. Worth the asking price… in spades!!! Great review. I’d try capturing your talking head segments in 2k, you might be surprised!! Great review “Robinson’s”!!!

The Yamaha method works well for closely mic'ed recordings that need more ambiance added by the speaker. Some recordings have the mic's further back and the ambiance of the room included in the recording. So that it makes it somewhat difficult to say that any one speaker is best for all recordings.

This is clearly the new flagship floor stander inheriting that from the NS-F901. How does this compare with the NSF901 and the NS5000? On paper, this is similar to the 901's but admittedly 3kg heavier and a larger cabinet. Good review. For this speaker, the NS5000 or the F901's, being large speakers capable of +100W RMS, what minimum room size is recommended.

Awesome review! Id love see a video on an ideal listening room. If you were building a house for example, how you set up your ideal listening room?
@Mark-rw3kw
@Mark-rw3kw 9 ай бұрын
Maybe not with those chairs right in front of the speakers, as shown in the video. As far as acoustical treatments, it depend a lot on your flooring (wood, tile, carpet), furniture (sofas, area rugs, etc), windows (exposed glass, curtains, etc). Be prepared to add acoustical treatments in cases where you need to compensate for too many hard surfaces. If building a house from scratch, check out acoustical sheetrock and other treatments available from a number of suppliers, and consider using two sheets of drywall (especially for a home theater that has powerful subwoofers). If you walk into an empty home from the same builder (or even a model home), and start talking, do you hear an echo? If so, you need to tell you builder that you don't want that, especially in your listening room. If you have the money, there are often local home theater installation experts in most cities who can help you with this, but you can also do the research yourself.

Thanks! Another great review Andrew and Kristi. First I want to thank you for being the first reviewers to turn me onto the Q-Acoustic Concept 50's. After your review and many others I decided to invest in a pair and remain very happy with their detailed yet non-fatiguing nature. I'm also reassured knowing you still currently keep a pair in your collection. I'm curious if you've ever been approached to review any Rosso Fiorentino speakers? I've seen them on a few of the other KZbin channels and a couple reviews in print. The one that catches my eye is the Elba 2 floor standers at $7K. From the reviews I've seen these seem to be in the QA vein of detailed yet non-fatiguing but potentially a step up in performance and featuring fine Italian craftsmanship. These may be too limited distribution wise in North America to appeal to you review wise since they only appear to have a single distributor out of TX (Audio Thesis) although apparently in Europe they are far more widely known. Also wanted to say your livestream this past Thursday had a lot of great in-depth discussion. Very insightful. Hoping Andrew can make that Wilson SabrinaX review he hinted at on Thursday become a reality. That speaker has always been a contender for my dream system. Keep up the good stuff!

So happy to hear you're enjoying your 50s! RE: Florentino speakers - No RE: Wilson - First, thanks for tuning into the LIVE. As much as I'd love to have them in-house, based on past exchanges, I'm not sure that'll happen. Some companies don't see value in reaching our audience (i.e., the audience is "not their market"), or they just don't want to be reviewed unless they know it's going to be all positive and/or have input on the review itself. Thank you for supporting the channel!

@@KristiWright I truly believe it's more the latter. With currently 346K subscribers you have far more exposure than the circulation of Stereophile and Absolute Sound combined. Even if only 1% of your subscribers could afford a Wilson speaker, that's still 3.5K potential customers.

That treble spike looks just like my Celestion Ditton 551 measures, complete with a slow crawl dip in the upper midrange leading up to it. That makes me crazy curious about these. Awesome review as always. I would like for both you and Kristi to review the Nakamichi Dragon(11.6.4). I was thinking of upgrading to a Klipsch system with an AVR, but I have seen some reviews that say that this new Nakamichi Dragon is the closest you can get to sounding like speakers with an AV receivers on a soundbar system. Thanks for all your awesome reviews Andrew.
@bearclaw5115
@bearclaw5115 9 ай бұрын
The dragon is awesome but it's still a soundbar system and will never be as good as having actual surround speakers (full system). So you have to decide what form factor you want. But for the same money a full system will beat it hands down.
@FelipePerez-ro4zg
@FelipePerez-ro4zg 9 ай бұрын
Yes, I know that tower speakers with center channel, rear surrounds with AV receiver will beat it hands down. But i also think if you purchase a good receiver with say some Klipsch Tower Speakert, Klipsch Subs and Klipsch surrounds with Dolby Atmos up firing speakers you will probably end up spending more money and will also take up more space. I’ve heard some people say that the Nakamichi Dragon is getting pretty close to that theatrical surround sound. I wanted Andrew and Kristi to review them and see what there opinions are regarding this Nakamichi Dragon. But thank you for your input, I appreciate all opinions and comments. 👍

Having made a couple speakers kits, the design the Yamaha cabinet is wise one. Putting the rounded edges where they are, if you are veneering a cabinet, you can simply make two big U shaped pieces instead of six different sides and having to deal with those pesky corners. Nice aesthetic. I first spotted it on Acoustic Energy speakers and copied it on my CSS Audio speakers.
