Hi! I just wanted to say thanks for posting such in depth videos on the Vstar. I put my 650 classic in the shop a few months ago for repairs on the carburetor, and already I’m having issues again with it. So I decided to troubleshoot it myself instead of taking it back to the shop and spend another thousand dollars for them not to fix it. I got it off the bike and disassembled both carburetors and they were pretty clean, so I don’t think that was the issue. But I did notice as I was taking them off the bike that the wire attached to one of the solenoids had a break in it. Sure enough, as I was disassembling them it broke completely. I started looking online for a replacement and really did not want to spend several hundred dollars for that one piece. Your tip about digging out the rubber, soldering the wire and then using epoxy on it may have saved me some cash. I appreciate that. I will try this tip and see if I can get the bike running smooth again. I liked the videos and I am a new subscriber to your channel. Keep the great content coming.

@@retrotechandelectronics turns out the "new" battery they installed was the problem, not the carbs. I purchased another one off Amazon (after the one from Advance Auto was too big to fit) and she started right up. I just need to do a bit of fine-tuning the throttle and should be good to go. I will be keeping the battery with me on a battery tender during winter months, and starting/riding the bike at least monthly during that time. I have also since purchased a 650 maintenance manual from Amazon. Thanks again for the great content!

@@nataliesmith6114 Remember to drain the bowls on the 650 when you put it up, there are screws on the bottom of the carb with easy access for this. otherwise the small jets will clog over the winter

My wife bought me a '09 650 Classic that had sat for 5 years in a garage. Ethanol Gas rot was all through the carbs. Once I got up the nerve to try it, your video walked me through the entire process from start to finish. Thank you. I do need to believe, I need to replace those carb bracket screws if I never end up in there again. Thanks again!

Excellent work shipmate. I was very hesitant to tackle this for a 'job'. I hadn't rebuilt a carb in many moons. The spring you highlighted as installed incorrectly was mangled on my customer bike. A trip to ACE, new spring, good as new. Also, I was very cautious, but still managed to launch the choke spring about 20 feet across my garage. Turn off the lights, and grab a flashlight to 'sweep' the floor with light and voila! I found it. Just wanted to say thanks for your most excellent tutorial.

Thank you JC excellent video and your instructions best I have seen. I am a bike mechanic from 1965 and now I am 73 but have not kept up with all the new tech they have put into bikes now . I was looking to buy one from a neighbor but it needs this work done, rich A/F ratio in the rear cylinder. I know how a CV carb works but these new systems are way more complex that in my old 1968 Honda CB 450. Liked and commented and subscribed . Be well.

Spent a very long time rebuilding my carb on a used bike that I purchased. The seller lied and had several missing internal carb pieces. I finally tracked them all down and installed one by one using your videos. Thank you so much for these, they have been phenomenal. I do have one issue that I still cannot figure out that I wanted to ask about (happy to electronically pay you for the consult). At 9:35 on your video you test the two black plastic pieces that are connected to the adjustable needle. When you push them back they spring RIGHT back into place. Mine do the opposite, as soon as you push them in, they just get stuck there. You can manually pull on the needle and they'll come back out. Everything is clean and the adjustable needle is properly assembled on both. However both stick like this. What do you think is the culprit. Could it be the diaphram springs themselves have just weakened over time and need to be replaced? Please help, like I said, I'd be happy to pay for your advice.

When i removed the air box it seemed as if it was just sitting on top. When i reinstalled it was 🤬 to get to mate with the carb. I had to loosen the manifold, mate the air box and carb, sandwich it down then snug up the manifold. This took me several hours and was the most frustrating part of reinstalling the carb. At one point i was using a good amount of force to shove the carb over (a crowbar would have helped but seemed excessive at the time) and trying to jam the air box boots on the carb.

As many of the others have stated, your videos are fantastic. I bought a 2004 650 v-Star classic that was converted into a bobber. I got it just before the pandemic started have been riding that thing just about every day since. I recently noticed that the, "air hose" as you called it, hose that connects the two carbs and then runs down between the cylinders and connects to a pipe that is open, is spitting out gas, especially when the bike is in idle. I have to feather the throttle at red lights to keep it from dying sometimes. Can you tell me exactly what in the cat hair this "air hose" is supposed to do and why is it spitting out gas? With the help of your videos I did take the tank off and the air box and did a visual inspection to see exactly where the gas was coming from was able to narrowing it down to coming out the end of this hose.

I was afraid you were going to say that, I don't think it has been that long since the guy before me had done "some" work on the carbs, he gave me a package of bits and pieces that was left over from when he had done some work on the carbs. However, from watching your videos I believe I will get a couple of kits and do some work on them myself. Thank you so much for the advice.

@@retrotechandelectronics As I mentioned, this seems to only happen when in idle, when the bike is reved up and moving I can't see or smell the gas like i can at a stop sign or red light. Will it hurt the bike to ride it like this until a rebuild kit come in?

Great video- seriously so helpful! Any recommendations for cleaning the exterior of my carbs? They're absolutely filthy from the previous owner. The bottom of the air box was also covered with grime. Do you think it is from a possible leak from the intake boots?

I have replaced my intake boots. The top airbox reinstall was a nightmare. After numerous hours of fighting, I got it on. Once the bike was back together it barely runs. It will run (poorly)on choke and dies once the choke is turned off.
@retrotechandelectronics4 жыл бұрын
It should not have been....The top air box should seat right on, you have other issues..... and one of them is an air leak causing a lean condition.
@bobconner42774 жыл бұрын
@@retrotechandelectronics I found out the carb popped out of both boots. The reason I had so much trouble because I bought the intake boots from Amazon and the angle of the boots were incorrect and due to that I had so much trouble connection the airbox to the carb.I put my old ones back on until I get the OEM ones. Serves me right for trying to save money and by cheap junk. Thanks for your videos as they helped me immensely in this process.
