Let's face it, doing an oil and filter change on most motorcycles is a relatively easy job & more often then not most mechanics, if they are been honest, won't even bother checking torque settings when doing these daily tasks....
But, when it's your own bike if you are like me, you're a little more inclined to try do the best job you can & have piece of mind that you won't strip a thread by over tightening a bolt or maybe fit the oil filter the wrong way around which could prevent oil flowing around the engine causing some pretty serious damage and big repair bills...
This may be why my 'oil & filter' change videos seem to be so popular, I include everything you need to know, with the info sourced from the Manufacturer's own workshop manual, including all relevant torque settings, quantities and as many of the part numbers I have to hand too, including the best type of oil to use for that bike...
If you have any questions then just add them to the comments section &n I'll get back to you just as soon as I can.

Although ive done loads of oil changes ,but new bike ( to me) i always look for any peculiarities of the respective bike. Good tip on the bolt on the oil filter housing. Ben ,would find ,that top maintenance works out much cheaper in the long run .

I'm watching this video in 2020, but I wonder, is it possible for you to give inch pounds etc. when you give specific torque values,..as I for one, have a torque wrench which ( unfortunately for me ) is only in pounds inch ! I too, am always 'preaching' the importance of using correct and proper torque values when working on things like this. Good video,.most helpful, thank you Andy.

What does it mean to have metal in the filter?
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
+Ascenso da Câmara It's an indication that there are components in the engine that have worn excessively or failed, usually bearings. Cheers Andy

Andy Mechanic what is the solution for that? Is it expensive?
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
+Ascenso da Câmara It's an engine rebuild so yes can be quite expensive unfortunately. A small amount of metal is acceptable

Hi Andy, I have been enjoying all your videos, you mention in this video that on this particular bike if after a cylinder hone, you would use mineral oil initially, my question is a separate issue, but i have just re honed the bores on my 1.4 2008 vauxhall corsa, what oil would you recommend initially starting the car up with? Thanks Jonathan
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Dean yes, definatly a mineral based oil after any engine machining to allow the new components to bed in. Then, after say 500 miles do another oil change to semi synthetic. Hope this helps :-)

Hi Andy, is the sealant around the O-rings is a necessary thing to do? I'm about to do my first oil change on the same model, but I don't have any sealant. Manual does not state that any sealant is required. Cheers
@AndyMechanic
@AndyMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, the o-ring should be replaced each time - Yamaha often advise this in their Service Manual. I added the sealant because I did not replace the o-ring only because I did not have one in stock at the time I made the video (from memory). I many people do not replace the o-ring nor use sealant - that is their decision but make sure you DO NOT over torque the bolts - 10 Nm from memory & check for leaks with engine running. Hope this helps Cheers Andy

Hi I think I added way more than 1.1L of engine oil and I could see there's an unusual amount of light blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. What do you think should I do? Replace the oil once again and add the exact amount?

Just drain it out & put the right amount in

Hi Andy. Yet again I come back to your video to find useful info. My TTR's Raid bottom Oil Filter Cover bolt is either snapped inside or thread is gone and it's leaking oil. I can't do it myself due to not having a garage, my local mechanic asked me £160 (290 Au dollars) for the job. 3 hours of labor and parts. Is this reasonable? I hope you don't mind me asking for an advice, don't know who else to ask. Thank you

Hi, Thanks :-) there are a couple of ways of fixing this issue. A helicoil isn't the best given its a high use Bolt - removed often. I'd suggest having a timecert fitted if there is sufficient material to allow. Unfortunately to do the job correctly the clutch cover should be removed. It's an easy task & one that you could probably do just fine. If you can then you could take the cover to an engineering company to have the timecert fitted - they will likely do a much better job & it won't be that expensive. You'll need a new clutch cover gasket too. The cover bolts are all 10 Nm Cheers Andy

@@AndyMechanic Hi Andy, I am writing on the comment made by Pijus Kr because I am facing the same issue. However, I want to clarify something. Am I right to assume that the sole function of the bottom hole in the oil filter space is there to just drain the oil down to the crankcase when one unscrews the bottom bolt? I believe the bottom bolt serves both to keep the cover in place and also to close the mentioned hole, keeping the oil in the oil filter space from going downwards into the engine (from the hole). If the bolt is not closing this hole as it should, the oil pump may also lose its pressure too, since oil would be passing downwards. Hence, if my assumption is correct, one may simply go for a different strategy, by blocking this hole in the bottom part of the oil filter space (since its purpose is to drain the oil when unscrewing the bolt to open the cover, to not spill the oil on the floor). Then just increase/lengthen the internal 6mm thread inside the engine (there is ample space for further thread) and install a longer 6mm bolt. This action’s only effect, if I am right, would be that a small amount of oil would fall out when opening the cover to check and clean the oil filter. As stated, this would only work if I may be correct on the sole purpose of such hole (which basically can be blocked). What is your opinion on this? Thank you and keep it up. 😊

does your advice about fully synthetic oil apply to the 2018 r3 as well?
@AndyMechanic

Yes, it will be just fine on Yamalube semisynthetic oil
@Fee.1
@Fee.1 3 жыл бұрын
Andy Mechanic thank you but just to clarify you had said explicitly not to use full synthetic in T250 because it’s an old motor etc. and I’m curious if that’s the same for the r3, I get that it will be fine with semi synthetic just curious if I should actively avoid it for that motor as well, appreciate your feedback and sorry for the poorly worded question initially
