WOW Espen KX88, something like that does make a lot of sense when having a permanent setup and a lot of midi gear like racks, amazing that Yamaha got it so right so early

Tbh I can achieve such sound on a 300$ Yamaha V50.... totally underrated synth/workstation you should totally cover in your video some day. Basically a double TX81Z module plus inbuilt Yamaha RX11 and a sequencer.

The V50 was my first synth in 1989 (?). The reverb and drums were awful, but the FM part was a beast!

By the way... the *Yamaha KX88* is a monster of a master keyboard! The only downside I can think of is: its maximum velocity was throttled to 110 instead of 127, for whatever reason. But the keybed is definitely one of the best I've ever had under my fingers.

Gorgeous sound quality.

Is this the keyboard version of the TX81z?
@EspenKraft10 күн бұрын
No, the keyboard has no sounds inside it at all. You're hearing what you see in the video title, the Yamaha TX816 which is 8 independent DX7 synths stacked together in a rack.

The keyboard version of a TX81Z is the DX11.

Or just use one Oberheim or a Prophet. I got to admit it sounds great.

Espen…would you consider this a vst in a box?

All modules of the past are in effect hardware "plugins". They were meant to be. Many looked at them as some judge plugins now, not the same sound, not inspiring, not real etc.

JX-8p sounds more convincing for such brasses ... imho ... but thanks for the demo, sometimes it’s useful to compare to understand the character of the device

So do you have to program every module individually? Is every module a polysynth module? How does the voice selection work? Can you do unison voicing with it? It sounds quite massive by the way. I will look into my TX802 again, as it basically a 8-part multitimbral DX7 mk II instrument, so in a way quite similar to your TX816.
@EspenKraft9 күн бұрын
Yes, the difference is that each TF-1 card inside the 816 is a DX7 with 16 voices. You program each TF-1 individually. You don't have to use all the 8 modules if you don't want to. It was made for the QX1 sequencer and to be played from the KX88 master keyboard where you have easy access to the modules. With these 3 units you have unlimited DX7 power with a total of 128 voices.
