Very helpful video, thanks. for those in metric countries, the Owner's manual says 2.6 litres without filter replacement, 2.8 Litres with filter replacement, 3.2 litres for a completely dry engine. Oil chosen depends on the temperature range where you will be using it. 20w50 is good for 5-50 degrees C. 10W40 will do -10 to 45 degrees C. Since the engine oil also lube's the clutch, do not use oils with a diesel spec of "CD" or labelled "Energy Conserving II"

Let me start by saying... I'm a drummer. Yes, I know. But your video was spot on. I did buy the tools, and did not use synthetic oil. But, for me it was smooth sailing. I have a 2000 650 with only 7000 miles on it. I bought it used with 5000 miles in 2003. So I obviously do not ride much. I even put my own tires on it this week with another video on yt. You saved me some money. And my bride who I call, yes dear, is very happy. Shine on...

Thanks for the video...I've changed the oil in my VStar 650 once and wanted a refresher before I do it again. Figured I would comment because you mentioned synthetic and a Jetta. We have the 650, Synthetic and Jetta in common. My Jetta is an 06 with the 2.5 liter engine. Nothing but synthetic since it was brand new, and with 190,000 miles on it, it still runs like a DREAM. Excellent highway car.

i totally agree. my bike calls for 2.96 quarts which is 94.7 ounces, since there is 96 ounces to 3 quarts the difference is 1.3 ounces, even less for you. there is no way that could be harmful especially considering the residual oil left over in the containers. love the foil idea, i suggest placing it there before running the engine, i burnt myself, haha.

I have a couple of mods on my bike that made the oil change a little more difficult than the one in the video. First, I have the J-slam which lowers the bike about 4" at the rear fender. Because of this, I couldn't get leverage to remove the drain plug or get my pan (which is like the one in the video) under the bike. I had to lift the rear a bit with a jack to get under there.

It says next to the glass it takes 2600cm3 witch is the same as 2600 ml and each quart has 946 ml in it so The best thing to do is pour the first 2 quarts in witch equals 1,892 ml so you just need 708 ml out of the last one and if you look at the side of the oil bottle there is a line that reads 700 ml so what I did was pour out some of the oil in to an open bottle of oil till it was at the 700 line

You should remind everyone to drain the oil with the engine hot but to let it get STONE COLD before changing the oil filter. If you don't, you risk stripping the female threads when you remove the stainless steel bolts from the aluminum housing. That's what happened to me when I followed the video exactly.

Wasn't bad on my Vstar650. They have to get a short 17, or have a lift, or they can lay the bike down on a set of tires in order to break the plug loose. Someone torqued mine tight so I had a fun time getting it loose.

those bolts too hold the cover on are just thumb tight right? i warpped one cap and have another now, but it is used. I have never had this much trouble out of a bike before. I never tightened any tighter than i do on any of the other bikes i have had, but anyways it would squeeze a drop out if i ride it a long ways.

How did you get the bike up on the lift with the carpet cover? I need to change the oil in mine, but I don't have a lift, will I need one? Also I would like to ask do I really need to take it to a dealer for the valve clearance checks? This will be the 600 mile oil change, and the dealerships want an arm and a leg to change the oil.and adjust for clearances. This is a very informational video, Thanks Ride Safe

The oil level should be half way up the glass when the bike is level it's about 2 3/4 quarts for the 650 with a filter change. As for the wet clutch, the engine oil and transmission oil are the same, you change the oil you are changing both. Don't use standard motor oil it will ruin your clutch, you should only use oil made for bikes.

Sorry, Meant to say " you can never over-change your oil. 3,000 miles is the key. In my opinion extended oil drain intervals are for ideal conditions for an engine. No one drives in ideal conditions. I hate sludge buildup in any engine. Changing oil my way will keep your engine protected and clean inside.

@imeqsmd righty tighty lefty loosy Refers to threads on a screw, nut, bolt, etc. To tighten, you turn to the right (clockwise). To loosen, you turn toward the left (counter clockwise). A few exceptions exist, notably old propane cylinders and some pipe fittings.
