Thank you, nice performance. Perhaps riding a V-twin might produce such an effect. And a Q - is there a certain sign or something, telling you that oil is OK for the bike - being a flat tappet v-twin. (and just watched your carb series - very good too, thank you).
@MidlandCruiser
@MidlandCruiser 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, I'm glad you like my videos. Big V-twins always need good oil which is changed regularly. There is always a big debate about oils between owners. What I do is get the right grade (20W if regularly above 4C) for the temperature I live in and use the bike in regularly, once I determine that I usually go fully synthetic. The brand doesn't really matter as long as it's for motorcycle and compatible with wet clutch (Jaso MA, MA2) the API rating as close as possible to Z in the alphabet means usually higher quality oil (API S-L, API-N etc. ) hope this helps.

Have you ever considered making a video on how to remove the XV1100 swing arm? I can see your bike is spotless but my swing arm has surface rust and needs painting. I’m nervous about what to look out for.
@MidlandCruiser
@MidlandCruiser 4 жыл бұрын
Funny you ask, because before I decided to make a youtube channel I had the swingarm out and sent it for powder coating 😁 unfortunately no video about it because I didn't even have a camera back then. It's not that hard really. Rear wheel out, then left side shock, then final drive ( it will slide out with the shaft), then right side shock, then both bearing pin(shaft/whatever it's called) then swingarm will come out. When you put it together, it matters which one is torqued down first, (can't remember) . Download a copy of the manual and you will be fine. 👍

@@MidlandCruiser Thanks a lot for the advice. I have the Haynes manual, but it's still daunting to the inexperienced, and it doesn't mention fluids. It may be a silly question, but are you in danger of losing oil from the drive shaft when this is taken off? and does anything have to be topped up again?
@MidlandCruiser
@MidlandCruiser 4 жыл бұрын
The only way to loose oil from it if you turn it upside-down, or the shaft seal at the end is leaking.. Otherwise just the undo the 4 bolt and pull it out, not a biggie. Hello. I used google translate so keep that in mind. To change oil in the rear suspension you need to send it to a suspension specialist who can strip, clean and refurbish them, that's not something you really can do home, because you'll need special tools and possibly presses to get it apart, look around in your area for suspension specialist...hope this helps

I'm going to switch from 10W40 conventional mineral oil to 20W50 synthetic oil because I'm finding it burns and turns dark very quickly with normal city driving
@MidlandCruiser
@MidlandCruiser 2 жыл бұрын
Modern synthetic oils are a lot more durable then old minerals so I'd say it's a good decision. In town riding on an air cooled bike puts a lot of pressure on the oil. I use this oil since I have the bike without any issues...please remember that the 10W - 20W relates to the ambient temperature to the place you use the bike in. Basically if it's hot always (California) then 20W, if it's cold like Alaska then 10W or even 5W but that could be too thin in the summer even there...hope this helps

Hey there! Great video, very informative and fun. When you used the torque wrench to tighten the oil filter cover bolts, what did you torque them down to exactly? I'm afraid of over tightening the bolts
@MidlandCruiser
@MidlandCruiser 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. Thank you. I torqued the cover bolts to 10Nm. Welcome to my channel 👍🔧
@radu2253
@radu2253 3 жыл бұрын
There's no reason to overtight the bolts because of the rubber seal located on the cover's inside, if you see any leaks just replace the worn rubber seal, or at least try to reseat it. Tip: in order to always avoid destroying the aluminium threads, just remember to loose the bolts a bit while the engine is cold, prior to begin heating the oil.

Hi buddy. I am new subscriber to your channel. Thank you very much for the information you shared. I am learning a lot from you. It makes me happy, too. I found this same engine and I'm thinking of buying it. But the engine has not been used for a year and a half. The engine is running, but it's got a lot of work to do. Would you recommend me to buy it? Between what years was the Yamaha virago xv 1100 produced? The seller told me the engine was 2002 model. Is this true? Was this engine produced until 2002? Thank you very much again. I'm following.
@MidlandCruiser
@MidlandCruiser 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you very much for your kind words...really appreciate it 👍 As for recommending to buy THAT bike I can't say, but to buy an 1100 virago I'd say definitely. If it's running than can't be too bad, but without looking and listening to it in real life it is hard to decide. Also depends on the price and budget for fixing up, if you add these two together you maybe find something better which needs a lot less work and money, not easy I know.. The XV1100 was produced between 1986 and 1999 so no there is no 2002 engine available, unless it was made in 1999 but was sold in 2002 as new from a dealer, which makes it a 2002 bike but production was stopped in 1999 regardless, hope it make sense..😉

It depends on the climate of where you live. If the ambient temperature is above 5C (fairly warm country) most of the time, then you'll need 20W-40 or 50 if you live in a cold place then 10W-40. @MidlandCruiser
@MidlandCruiser 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you. I choose 100% synthetic because they offer a lot better protection against wear, and it doesn't degrade as quickly as mineral oils just to name a few. Also because they use a high quality base oil so oil companies can tailor the properties of the oil with additives to a higher level then they can with minerals... These are just the basics, there is a lot more to it though.. Also I have had no problems in the last 2000miles...hope this helps.

I use this oil since I have the bike so I can't really compare it to anything else. It is the recommended grade by Yamaha if the ambient temperature is mostly above 5C in your Country. The oil itslef is top stuff (hence it's price😁) had no clutch slip or starting problems even after sitting for months... Hope this helps

@@MidlandCruiser I wish I could get 20/50 here in Thailand. But the Castrol 20/40 does the job as well.

@@sisaketmike yeah you really need 20-50 in that climate, but like you said, the 40 will do, go on country roads not in the city😉

@@MidlandCruiser It's not good for the city. But i haven't yet found 20/50, nobody else seems to use such oil. I prefer to change it more often but riding in a big city with 20/40 in Thailand is not a good idea. The engine will get too hot and parts might say goodbye.

@Michael Mersi Maybe you could consider fitting an oil cooler on it...Steve Hiles in the Nation group sell oil filter caps with outlets on it then any general radiator which is the right size will do..connected with hydraulic hoses and you're done👍

Hello. Thank you for your comment. I had to use google translate as I don't speak Russian. I think you are saying that 3 liters of oil is not enough. If you watched the whole video then you see I say that I filled it up roughly 3 liters then start the engine to prime the filter, then I check the level 10 min later after it settled down, then I say top it up. Roughly ended up around 3.2 liters. Hope this clears up any doubt

Is it right before I start driving to leave the motorcycle for 5-10 minutes at the central stand and check the oil level.? or should I have warmed up the engine first?

20w-50 is better for air cooled vtwins. the full synthetic version will help the oil from breaking down in hot city traffic when the engine has nothing to cool it down. if you notice the clutch slipping, switch to semi-synthetic or even better, mineral oil.
