Yamaha Waverunner winterizing / spark plugs change 1.8 L HO/SVHO GP1800R

I'm new to PWCs but a mechanic by trade, thanks for teaching me how to take care of my new VX HO. My only suggestion would to be careful about cranking a high compression engine with liquid (fogging oil) on top of the piston. Might be safer to spray the oil in the plug hole while you're cranking the engine. You could also spray past the throttle body (spark plugs removed) and do all 4 cylinders at once. Good luck sir!

Yes with excessive fogging oil, the risk of hydro locking the engine and bending rods is a risk. (45 year mechanic here). It doesn’t appear he had any issues cranking or starting though. When I fog my machines, I disconnect the coil overs and injector connections, spray the oil in and crank the engine a bunch of times with plugs out. In the spring (before starting) I check the top of pistons for condensation and any excess fogging oil. And moisture left behind in the water box over the winter will condense on top of pistons and spark plugs on whatever cylinder had exhaust valves open when stored.

EXCELLENT video - Thanks for sharing and explaining the procedure to prepare and winterize a Yamaha Waverunner! I have watched several, and this by far is the BEST - Very thorough and informative!! I am looking to purchase a pair of 2020 Yamaha FX Cruiser HO machines and what the dealers charge to service them is extremely expensive. Following your instructions and direction, I feel quite comfortable doing it myself. I just have to figure out your antifreeze configuration and container!

Nicely done. I like to add Stabil to all of my gas jugs as soon as I fill them. Then I know that everything from lawnmowers to waverunners are set.

Check your valve arrangement… When you shut off the freshwater, the valve was downstream of the coolant as well… You shut off all flow to the engine

Can I use traditional car antifreeze? Also, you did not fog the Intake. Does the intake not need to be fogged? THE PWC will be in a heated garaj for winter ....Thanks

The fuel stabilizer should be the first step in the video so it runs through the injectors

Gravity, but for best results use an utility pump in a bucket of antifreeze.

Just with gravity very little will come out to the side, for that I use a bucket with antifreeze and a submersible utility pump, that way it will come out everywhere.

Thank you for the video, I have a question. Next season when you take out the ski, do you need to do anything after spraying the fogging oil in the cylinders? You don't have to do anything , just start it up and it will smoke for couple seconds and done. All fogging oil will burn out and good to go.

2021 HO models. shouldn't there be anti-freeze coming out the port on the side of the ski? to ensure that the entire cooling system has been winterized?

With this method there is but not much, if you want to see more coming out you can use a 5 gal bucket and use an utility pump submersed to pump the antifreeze vs gravity .

It’s a 200 hour or 24 month whatever comes first.

There is no need to torque them usually is 1/3-1/2 turn from finger tight but if u want to torque them manual says 18.4 ft-lbs.

After running 3 gallons of antifreeze through the Waverunner my engine overheating alarm warning came on. I could see the fluid coming out the back. Have you seen this? Thanks

Was your antifreeze tank elevated ? U need a bit of pressure to send it tru the engine or else it will come out the back only. You have to see the antifreeze coming out the side outlet of the ski. If it doesn't work for you then try using a 5 gallon bucket filled with antifreeze and use a submersible pump to pump it into the engine.

I have 2 yamahas, a 2017 VXHO and a 2021 SVHO. For the VXHO this method worked fine. However when I tried it with the 2021 SVHO, the engine overheated. The water part was fine, but when I switched to the antifreeze the flow of the antifreeze was very slow and there was just a small stream of antifreeze coming out of the exhaust. I checked the hoses and the coolant tub and the flow was fine there. So I'm not sure what happened. Does the SVHO need a higher coolant flow rate than the VXHO?

For the 2021 use a small utility pump that has a garden hose connection in a 5 gal bucket of antifreeze. That will do it.

That was the first service on the watercraft, I do mine every 50 hours or every year. Check owners manual for service intervals.

you can hold the stop and start button at the same time and that will crank it and not start it, if memory serves me correctly

my VX HO shuts off after 15 seconds of the engine running...is that normal? It does it while hooked up to water and not hooked up. It's only got 62 hours in the motor.

Why not just buy a wetsuit and ride all year long? I've surfed around icebergs before so can't see why I wouldn't ride my ski with a good wetsuit

If you ride all year you wouldn’t need fuel stabilizer or to tend your battery, but do you risk water freezing in the ski over night? I think if you live somewhere it freezes over night you would still need to either blow out the water or run antifreeze. Or is just hitting the throttle out of the water for a few seconds clear enough?
