Dipped in and out of your videos on this. Used to Despatch 3/4 XJ650s many years ago, wonderful bike, lovely sound, reliable, great engine. I'm not a big fan of customising great designs, but must say your videos are really good and the amount of work you have put in is incredible, huge respect for your ability and the style of this one, brilliant job pal!

The fabrication and paint is brilliant, so often custom bikes look cobbled together... particularly with the eBay accessories (and seats) that never seem to fit properly. Your work is seamless, great work mate!!

I've had a xj650 for the past 3 years that ive been slowly learning to fix, when I bought it I was told it just needed a new battery, gas and tabs and itd be good as new. Unfortunately I found that the carbs were completely plugged with old gas and that the entire wiring harness was shit. I used your vids as help and I'm about to throw the carbs in and hope it fires over. Fingers crossed!

Hi, I've been following this rebuild and I'm very impressed with the detail you provide. I'm currently re building a 1980 XJ650 Seca here in Geelong, Vic. Where can I obtain a set of 1st oversize pistons and rings in Oz? Infact, gaskets too if possible. Prefer to shop on home soil. Thanks for any info :)
@Mezzmoengineering2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, I found my gasket set on ebay. There's not much here in Auz so most likely will be overseas. Not sure where to find oversize pistons, you could try your local Yamaha dealer or Ebay is also a could source for parts

what are the side covers off of?? did you get rid of the popping below 4k, have you had any trouble with slide flutter between 3.5 and 4K? it's taken me almost a year to figure why these bikes have those problems, unlike other CV carbs hitachi's don't have any compensators like accelerator pumps and other operating diaphragms, yamaha designed these bike to use the intake restriction from the airbox and back pressure from the exhaust restriction to control the low end mixture, opening up the exhaust and intake plays havoc on mixture control especially between 3.5 and 4k rpm's which is the transition point between the pilot and main jets circuits...

Hi Mate, still haven't gone on a first ride. Carby tuning still needs to be sorted. I plan to start this soon, Looks like it might be a bit of trial and error. I'm certainly not happy with it yet and its a bit tricky given all the mods I've done...
@totallmayhem74234 жыл бұрын
looks good, but the stock headlight looks horrible on it. I restored one myself but I modified the bracket to lower and tuck in better. made a huge difference. I think yourse would look better with a smaller, more modern headlight with leds though.
@Mezzmoengineering4 жыл бұрын
At this stage I don't mind the headlight as is. Still need to tune and get it running properly. Will no doubt make improvements over time. Am going to put some tank emblems on soon, just need to find some new ones.
@Baldybrew4 жыл бұрын
I see even with the bike fully custom and gone through, it still struggles with that 2nd gear. I talked to an old Yammie guy who told me that 2nd on these bikes is just so damn fickle. My XJ650 Maxim does the same thing. You basically have to quick shift or do a hybrid of a standard shift from 1st or you will hit neutral every time. Really struggled with that while learning on this bike.
@Mezzmoengineering4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, its funny that was the first time I missed 2nd. It does feel different to the bike I've been riding but I think its just a matter of getting used to pushing a bit harder into 2nd, Only time it happened was on video, LOL

So im looking at buying a 1983 yamaha xj650 is there any thing i should look for or ask about it?
@Mezzmoengineering3 жыл бұрын
They are pretty solid bikes. Just look at general condition etc. Run the engine and listen for a rattle. The biggest problem with these is stretched primary chains. When they wear you will hear a rattle at idle.

@@Mezzmoengineering thanks man it's OK I can go +1 over i won't be as happy. I have read about a yoshimura stage 5 cam for the 820 kit, don't know the lobe specs but the xj700 non x cams are around a mil bigger on exhaust and intake,I am hoping to have some success, haven't heard of anyone succeeding or failing with these. How did you learn how to do this stuff?
@Mezzmoengineering4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, well I started my career as a Fitter and Turner. Then for a long time after studying I've been a mechanical engineer. I have always pushed the boundaries and tried things. Some things like Spray painting, body work etc I've learnt myself and engineering things my job have given me lots of knowledge. My advice is to just try things, a few mistakes and you learn a lot...KZbin is your friend when trying to learn these days too
