The howling you hear, that goes away when you slow down is likely the turbo. The 80's were the best days of my life.

That sound might be the speedometer cable needing lube...

You know, that yellow paint is sorta growing on me. Some of the vintage yamaha "Kenny Roberts" race stripes would make it pop. Sounds like it has a higher rpm misfire under acceleration, but nice job on getting to this point. 👍

Great video. That is a fast bike. I agree and think it is ready to sell. That could make someone a great mid level bike.

I think I'd keep it as is and just ride it. It's too nice to sell and the value you'd get from riding it is more than if you sold it. Add it to the collection. It's unique.

Sounded like it was still breaking down a bit on thise 0-60 runs. Maybe changing out all the plugs will help with that. In any case, i dont think youve gotten the best out of the old girl yet. Loving this series, great to see these old bikes brought back to life.

My brother-in-law had one but the bike was destroyed when he got blown off the road in a really strong sidewind gust. Bits of the bike were still in the farmers paddock a year of so later. He got a bit banged up, but he healed. The turbo boost was like getting a kick in the backside, and so much fun to ride. You just have to keep the maintenance up on them especially looking after the turbo. The wastegate was problematic and would result in overboosting at low RPM. It would open and stay stuck open, or open way too early. Using good quality oil and keeping to the maintenance schedule will go a long way to many miles of bloody fun riding without problems.

I had a brand new one back in 1983 and Yamaha made a free boost kit for it, the kit gave it more boost that it would bury the boost needle.

Many Years ago I bought a Yellow Fairing in US. Now as I see this the first Time I suspected it is my Fairing. May be this Paint was made on other Turbos, too. Meanwhile mine is Silver as Original. And I love mine the same as You do. It is serious fast ... Good Luck with it!

The whining could also be either the tacho or speedo.

I’ve heard that sound before and it’s either a spirometer cable, or the speedometer itself. If it has a speedometer cable disconnect it and see if the sound goes away.

I don't think you should do a full resto: that bike's all ready to be someone's new ripper! What I would do is give it a full service: fully service the brakes, fully service the charging system, fully service the carbs/airbox, and make sure everything is squared away and reliable. Then (after you make a motovlog on it please) you sell it to someone who wants to ride the wheels off it. Do what you enjoy doing most of all! That's the content we like to see

My 1985 Kawasaki GPz550 has a sensor just like your Yamaha, for the battery. Your Yamaha and my GPz550 were built and sold with the old-fashioned lead acid batteries that have those little removable caps. Your supposed to remove one of those caps and install the sensor in its place. I no longer use the old-fashioned lead acid batteries in my GPz550. I use a sealed battery. I disconnected and removed the sensor from the bike and connected a +12V lead to the wire that was for the sensor. This eliminated the nuisance LOW BATTERY ELECTROLITE LEVEL alarm. This remedy should work on your Yamaha.
