Putting the carbs back together today. Step-by-step from the bare carb bodies to piecing the bank back together. All parts have been ultrasonically cleaned, new gaskets and float seats but the rest of the brass is usable. Problems with stuck air mixture screws and broken float post sorted (post with w replacement carb body!). Next step...bench sync.

Great video everything is very well explained! After a severe leak of gasoline I had to replace the black fuel t piece with a bronze aftermarket with two o rings on each side. Unfortunately the rubber part of the black fuel t piece is shrinking after so many years and the only way to fix it is to replace it.

Thanks for the tip. I’m anticipating mine will need replacing too. The rubber is not so flexible any more!

I have similar carburetors and bike with settings; pilot screw open 3 turns, needle clips at 4.5th position, and no rubber tube on the air intake box. I had to install the clip for 4.5th because there was power missing and bad responce at 2000 - 2500rpm while clips were at 3th and pilots open 2,5. I also tested clips at 2nd at up, but it was explicid. The horse almost choked so, clips at 1st is defenetly not the right for me. I have not tested clips to lowest, but I can say it's ALOT more power at 2000 - 2500rpm now. Nice video! Thanks!

@@ratmotors903 Hey there! I just did something at my place. I exchanged stock 107,5 jets with 117,5 jets. I would say now it's as it is suppose to. I had to install bigger since my XJ600N had 105 as stock and I tried 110 for it and it was good with those. At that point it was weird to think XJ900F stock jets as best possible for it, so I installed 117,5 in to it and it's great! Not sure about the power though. Speqs says 98hp, but with those jets I would hope 101hp atleast. As edit. I have now tested these 117,5 jets and I would suggest these as the best I know so far. Works better at slow ride, acceleration and hard going. My result is that 117,5 is every way better than orginal 107,5. Top speed will be more than 220km/h. Even fuel consumption is just fine with 117,5. Did you try it allready? What adjustments and sizes of jets and so on?

An interesting video but, having spent many hours rebuilding carbs over many decades, the last two sets being an XJ600 and an XJ900, I always smear a film of silicon grease on all O-rings and gaskets. This helps to stop them drying out and keeps them flexible otherwise you risk fuel leaks developing over time. The grease on the pilot fuel screw O-ring, which went AWOL but I see you added later, eases setting and adjustment of the mixture. How did you repair the broken float pillar? I always use a small socket on the pillar to act as a counterweight when I'm tapping out the pin but, if one did ever break, your experience in repairing it would be helpful. Richard

Hi Richard, thanks for taking the time to comment! This was my first go at the xj900. I’ve a set of XS1100 carbs on the bench which are very similar. Thanks for the tip, silicone grease makes a lot of sense, I’ll certainly be using that! For this broken pillar I fixed it with a new one I’m afraid! After a quick eBay search there was a carb body for sale which I swapped out. I had some marine weld ready which I was going to try. There was enough meat to get good adhesion but i was nervous about trusting it! Rough plan was to use the float pin to hold the broken pillar in position while the marine weld set, and then smoothing off with the dremmel afterwards.

@@ratmotors903 Many thanks for coming back to me. The replacement carb body does sound like the best solution in the long run.

Hi Mike, yes I did them as per the spec in Haynes 22.3mm give or take 0.5mm. I go through it all in a later video when I bench sync the set. Thanks for watching!
