Another great video - and I have to say that Yambits has saved the day with my bike restorations a number of times. Those open ended caged needle bearings are generic and you can find the numbers stamped right on them - $60 from Yamaha, $20 from Yambits and $6 from a bearing supply house. The better quality bearings cases usually have a rubber wiper around the circumference of the bearing face to help keep the grease in and the dirt out, otherwise a seal is usually used. Thanks for taking the extra time and showing the "tricks of the trade" with those alternative bearing press methods. I hope people out there watching realize just how valuable this video is. Great work Del & Penny!

Thank you so much for your kind words of support... that is the aim, to try and spread a little insight, to help people keep their bikes on the road! Very often, the kind of neglect that's lead to these bearings being as bad as they are is from a lack of knowledge and confidence in doing this relatively simple job!
@KensWorldRestorations4 ай бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 So true. It's sad to know that the cost of labour is killing bikes that are 10-20 years old. With so much depreciation, sometimes people will consider scrapping a perfectly good bike when the cost to repair starts exceeding about 1/2 the price of the bike. You're doing such a great service to the community of helping people realize that you don't need a mound of special tools to do basic work.
@kamsmag4 ай бұрын
Fun fact, I pressed those bearings with my fingers. As long as everything is clean and greased they can be pressed with very little force. That surprised me. Obviously not the case with all bearings. Thanks for the video. If you were to let a garage do this job on your bike it would not only cost a lot, bike off the road likely for a few days and I doubt they would give everything a nice clean before the reassembly. Precisely why I do these things myself. Cleaning stuff often takes more time than the job itself.

Sure thing mate, if you're paying someone by the hour I guess you wouldn't want them charging you for cleaning, so I suppose it's understandable!

Enjoyed this video Del,thanks for great advice and the way you do stuff encourages others to have a go,I did similar job long time ago on a gpz 750 and I fitted a grease nipple to the swing arm while I was at it(seemed a good idea at the time but maybe I got a bit carried away🙄)it's still sat in the garage as an unfinished project but this reminded me of it and inspires me to get the spanners out again,keep up the good work 👍🏻

Cheers mate, I hear that often, people adding grease fittings to them, but in reality how often are you gonna get under there and pump it with more grease... and also, as the ends of the swing arm have sealed rubber caps, there's nowhere for any old grease to go, so it's not strictly necessary... Shame about the project, should get stuck in to it mate, am sure you'd enjoy it!

Hi Delboy, great video. Is there any particular reason why those bearings were that bad ? I have never seen anything that bad. Is there alot of miles on the bike ? Or is just neglect ? Well either way it's taken care of now. Best regards to you and your wife. Frank from Florida
@Moonfleet414 ай бұрын
Hi Frank, obviously it's purely speculation, but from experience I'd imagine as the rest of the bike isn't so bad, perhaps somebody used a pressure washer and washed the grease out of the bearing some time ago... leaving nature to do the rest... this is an area of the bike that's often gunky and oily, so sometimes even if people are over enthusiastic with the chain degreaser, it can wash the grease out of the left hand swing arm bearing... so one of those, or both, could be responsible as the rest of the bike is certainly in better condition!

Hi mate, regarding the adverts, nobody's ripping you off here because you aren't paying anything in tolerating them. You Tube is a commercial company, just like any TV station, and they need money to survive and profit to pay their shareholders... and they pay us, the Creators, a TINY fraction of that as a commission, so in tolerating those ads you're actually helping to support us to create the content you enjoy... but they simply offer a choice, if you don't want to tolerate the ads, that's fine, you have the option to pay a little subscription (of which they hand us a tiny fraction), and then you'll see no ads!... it's the way the world goes round brother! Making content is expensive, not just cameras and equipment, but for us, it's parts, materials and overheads as well and we do it all to help you guys save money and keep your bikes on the road... money you could potentially save up and buy your dream bike with and keep it on the road, just like your buddy did, God bless him........ we're so sorry to hear the tragic story of what happened to him, and our thoughts are with you and his family... it just goes to show how important it is to 'grasp the day' and live every moment because you never know when the 'big man' is gonna call you in... take care buddy, ride safe, and thank you for your support, D&Px
