Great job breaking it down to the basics. I was surprised the timing was still off even though you had set it statically.

Thanks so much for your video, I have a TX 750 and I'd say the dwell setting are the same as the XS 650 , great video.

Thanks you - was very helpful to my son and I as we try to get his 1978 XS 650 tuned in - has been back firing, and he about broke his ankle yesterday while attempting a kick start

Thanks for this. Great info. One suggestion. Even though your advance is OK, it would have been nice to see how you adjust it in any case......!
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut Жыл бұрын
Great suggestion! So I will explain. First, I want to make sure the advance is working properly when the engine is running. Full advance at 3000-3500 rpm. If the advance timing mark didn't line at full advance, at around 3500 RPM, I would adjust the back timing plate until it did, and this is why I would make this trade off. If the F timing mark is off a little bit at idle, the engine will be fine, but if the full advance mark is off, I will ether not make full power if it is retarded or risk preignition if it is overly advanced, and the we start melting pistons under heavy loads at higher rpms. We don't want to go there. You can make adjustments to to the advance unit, but you better really know what your doing. I think Yamaha have it figured out pretty well. I would stick with the stock set up If you want your engine to last.

Hello there is have a 79 xs650, it runs fine during idle but dies when any fuel is given at all. I cleaned carbs and still the same thing. any ideas?
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 7 жыл бұрын
Make sure your timing is set correctly. You have to determine if you are starving for fuel or flooding. Remove air filters, especially if you have pods on them. See if the sides move. First with your finger, then when is running. If not fix it. Carb bowl gaskets need to be in good shape or replace them. float level is also important. If you didn't clean all the little holes and jets in the bowl you'll need to do that. Check for air leaks also. Hope that helps .

HEllo, how is it I can get the right one to set properly( right at timing mark) but the left one is wayyyyyy off and I cant adjust it, can the dwell be off that much?
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut Жыл бұрын
If the dwell is way off you will either get a very weak spark or the coil will over heat depending on which way it is off. Things to check. Either the points are worn out or bent at the contact. Or the backing plate is loose in the pocket of the engine and when you adjust the timing of the engine it changes the dwell setting on both points and you chase your ass trying to set them properly.

Why do you set the meter to 4cyl ?...
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 6 жыл бұрын
Because it's the lowest setting on the dwell meter. The factory dwell spec for the points is 90 degrees divided by 4 is 22.5 degrees.
@danimal_drum

@@Amotorcyclenut just so I'm understanding correctly. IF you have a dwell meter that had a 2 cylinder setting. You would set the points at 45 degrees?
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 5 жыл бұрын
True if the engine has two sets of points.. If you get confused for some reason. set the points with the dwell meter and double check the gap with a feeler gauge. should be .012-.016". The purpose of the dwell meter is to get both sets of points to have the same dwell angle so that the cylinders fire the same. You might have to adjust the dwell angle slightly on both sets of points to get it to fire at the correct place with the timing plate that the points are mounted to depending on the condition of your points.

what if the right side is not firing at all but the left is
@Amotorcyclenut
@Amotorcyclenut 6 жыл бұрын
Then you need to see if that side has power making it to the points. Then check the spark plug, spark plug cap, coil, all the connectors to that side, points and static timing. If its an ignition problem you'll find it. If it's not it might be an air/ fuel or lack of compression problem.
