Hi Andy. Loved this series so far. Most of this episode too. I just get to wondering with a couple of your sketchbook scenes - the practical scenes were great on the whole BTW. I just don't think you were confidant about what you were saying. The things you are describing won't work with anyone who doesn't know his electrics anyway. There was confusion between current and power on one occasion. Automotive electrics can be confusing even to non-automotive electrical "workers" (including myself) due to the mix of some parts being switched to positive while other being switched to negative etc. This is done I believe, to remove as many components as possible for reliability and cost reasons. On this point, most people don't understand the reason relays are used. At the end of the day, these are used to control large current using a small current circuit, so you don't end up with your whole bike being wired (& hence covered) in 10mm sq cable. Maybe an explanation of this would have been useful. I really enjoyed your explanation of transistor controlled ignition by the way. Very well explained, and I learned something along the way, it all meant sense (to me anyway). Your Mikuni carbs video is honestly the best explanation I've ever seen of how a carb works, (I still don't totally get it "cos I am a bit fick", but I do have a much better idea now). Electrics are there for functionality only and they obey their own rules so there is never any subjectivity in it. Have you ever seen a custom bike channel pimping their electrics? Please don't take this as a criticism of you or your channel. I just feel that sometimes we can get into a situation where we feel we need to explain something that we don't have a TOTALLY full grasp of i.e. I know how something works but I'm not confident enough to mentor someone on that subject, due to not being able to describe something in the way that an expert could pick holes in your terminology. This is where Delboy goes wrong. He takes on subject that are way over his head. He probably does this because he doesn't have the balls to say no to his subscribers due to him having a weak personality. He doesn't like any type of criticism (even constructive). Keep it up, I haven't been able to stop watching this all day. You are a natural, my blood pressure drops when I'm listening to you (most of the time lol). I wish I could have contacted you directly. Robots N That thanks for taking the time to give such great feedback. I do often get my wucking mords fuddled and use incorrect terminology, and I usually don’t pick up on it. I feel that your comments are accurate in so far as to say that I understand enough to be able to fuddle through resolving electrical issues but don’t have the depth of knowledge to confidentiality explain it beyond basic levels to anyone. he never claims to be a master electrician and that his videos and methods are be-all-end-all, so i’m really not sure what you’re getting at. anyone would be a fool if they thought they had it mastered after watching one youtube video on any topic. as i work through my own bike i watch his videos several times as well as go through mountains of reading elsewhere on the internet. one need not go to school or earn a degree to master something like this

Hiya Andy mate, I'm ressurecting an old one here.. I just came across this video this evening as I'm hoping to start on a bare bones rewire of my '85 Xv750 over the next few days. Thankfully I've a spare loom that's not been hacked, spliced or butchered. So taking things slowly with this and your other videos, I hope I'll get there. Trying to find the bloody time now between here and Christmas to do more work will be a challenge due to my wife's popularity and our subsequent social calendar :)

I know you did this build quite some time ago what gauge aluminum did you use for the battery tray sheet tray etc. without using heat it seems you were able to bend it without breaking it I am so interested in this even though it was done so long ago I believe I have the means to follow in your footsteps technology has changed in the last five years I’m hoping to bring something to the table hopefully as unique

I've had a bit more of a think about this one. If ever I was going to trip up it was going to be on the electrical system. I didn't need that diode. It really is only needed if I was to run a clutch or side stand switch to stop the neutral light coming on every time you pull the clutch lever in. Oh well...it was still a good exercise.

hey i have the 79 xs1100 and i sometimes i get spark or nothing at all the bike is a basket case. i put new coil packs in it and it start up but only on starting fluid and the next day i had no spark. i remove the harness to clean all connections. i did fine one that was melted it went to the key switch. just asking you have any ideas what it could be? and my light don't work.

@AndyMotorcycleObsession I have a 1980 XS1100 and having some issues. Lights and gauges turned on the night before and seemed to be fine. Next morning no power at all. Tried two different batteries with zero luck. Checked all connections and everything seems connected well. Fuses as well look fine other than that the main fuse inside the metal is straight not curved like the others. What could this be?

Changed the handlebar to a painted one from the chrome stock one, and front lights(headlight, turning signals). Right now the electric start button won't work. I have a 79 and I've read that it grounds through the handlebar same as the horn but my horn is working fine. Battery and fuses were fine. Not sure where to go from there

Yes it does earth through the bars. Unplug the connector to the RH handlebar switch that sits under the tank. Inspect the connections and make sure that the pins are making good contact, you may need to spread them slightly with a very small screwdriver or something similar, check ALL connections. If you have a multi-meter set it to continuity and put one lead on the starter wire at the plug, from memory it's blue with a white trace, and the other lead to the frame or battery earth. It should "beep" when you press the start button. If not it could be the button itself and may just need a good clean of the contacts.

Hey Andy what did you do with those other wires up to the ignition switch?

Which wires specifically mate? On my bike there is one 30 amp fused red wire between the battery and the ignition switch and then a brown wire back out of the switch to the fusebox. There are two blue wires for the lights and I tied the park light wire to the park function and all the others to ignition on. I have since replaced the switch with a Motogadget M-Lock kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6KUd2mchryGmrs Thanks for tuning in, Andy
