My first bike after 30 years away from riding is a 2017 XSR 900. For the first few months I rode it on full traction control in rain mode. It's now in standard mode, but still full traction, and yet it has still popped several mini wheelies. I have to say, hand on heart, I think this bike has saved my arse on several occasions. I treat this bike with the respect it deserves. I look after it, and it looks after me. Absolutely love it. My only gripe: the fuel tank styling and fuel capacity. Love the lines of the XSR 700 tank, not so the 900. Fuel capacity could be several litres more. And if you're wondering, I turn 56 this coming April.

One thing to add, is that the exhaust majorly impacts how you experience the bike. Give the 700 a proper full exhaust like the 900 had, and it will also roar through the rev range like a classic muscle car ripping down the interstate. That's one of the main reasons I find the 700 so appealing, sure it's not a complete hooligan bike, but it still maintains that thunder in its soul once you open it up and let it sing a bit without restrictions
@Real_MisterSir4 жыл бұрын
@tom tom You can literally see the full Akra exhaust on it (6:52 example). The reason yours might sound more violent is likely because you removed the baffle, which isn't the case with this one. Still, the full exhaust with baffle still highly alters the sound compared to the stock system.. Besides, you can alter a lot of how a bike behaves depending on how your tune is set up. Can't compare modded to modded like they're the same. Besides, Yammie doesn't like wheelies, you will never see him pull one even when there is plenty of potential for it. So don't expect him to pull one. And obviously a parallel twin will never sound like a triple. It s a different engine with its own character. Why would anyone expect a twin to sound like a triple?..

@markpeter1074 жыл бұрын
@@genericallyaccepted, most definitely comfortable enough for a daily commute. i think you will get about 140-150 miles to the tank... a bit less if you are aggressive of course. 10 miles on the freeway would be no issue. I have the clear OEM windscreen. It isn't very large but does deflect enough wind to make speeds over 70 manageable. the riding position is very comfortable (not hard on the wrists at all) but the seat isn't the most comfortable IF you were going to be riding for more than 2-3 hours at a time. without the windscreen, the wind was hitting me straight on. with the screen, it might hit the upper shoulders. So again, you could certainly do a longer road trip but you need to be a bit of a warrior. hope this helps!

Got MT 09 as second bike (after 3500 miles on a Honda Rebel 500). I’ve lost 4k$ on this exchange, don’t want to change in 2 years. I got the bike, hit the road in STD mode and TCS 1 progressively. Saw the throttle was « responsive ». Got few hits, after 500 miles I can hit pothole and the bike stay under control. I also start to lean more and give throttle at end of corners. 60 to 80 off and on ramp will give you a smile. It depends on your maturity, if you like to go full throttle all the time then, or cant resist to hit max speed on all bike you touch, MT are just not for you, or any bike with agressive throttle responses. Even the 07 can pop the wheel if you hit hard. If you’re smart and want to get home safe it’s a good bike. Slipper clutch is awesome and cruising on highway is night and day.

Nice to hear more about the XSR! I'm a relatively new rider and the 900 was my first bike about 2 months ago. I ride almost every day in pretty heavy traffic and I've never felt like the bike was too much. People keep saying it's not a beginner bike, but I don't know what that means. Is it just too twitchy a throttle? Not about to contradict any experts, I just think as long as you're careful AF, taken some courses, and have some other riding under your belt (used to ride dirt bikes as a kid) you're fine. The 900 makes 30% more torque off idle(!) than a 600 AND a 1000 super sport where the 1000 matches torque at like 8k rpm..it is a nutty bike that will put someone on their ass with the quickness. I rode both back to back last summer. The XSR 700, though perhaps the most capable bike at its price point, felt like a soulless appliance to me. In contrast, the XSR 900 has bags of character, owed just about entirely to its engine. Of course, even if the dollar difference isn't so great as to put a lot of distance between these bikes, the power delivery is. That said, I recoil a bit when I hear people assert, "Beginners beware!" These bikes are not literal demons. It has a throttle. It's able to go slow and fast. If you're a nervous beginner or a reckless daredevil or not terribly well coordinated physically, yes, I'd steer clear. But if you've got a good head on your shoulders and are quite capable of staying in control physically, I wouldn't fear more powerful machines like the XSR900. Just respect it.

This is my first bike, the XSR900. I love the bike and after 34 days I am still enjoying riding. I have to admit that whatever I thought about bikes being fast has completely changed... It is fast but nothing like what I thought it would be. Traction Control may make new riders feel a lot more comfortable than they should, but I’m not blown away. Get the 900.

Ha, same! I got mine a few months ago. I'm in my late 30s and not a dumbass though, so I've been very careful with it and haven't done anything foolish. It requires a steady and careful throttle hand, but if you're mature and treat it with respect, you'll be fine.

I just want to point out that you sold me on these after contemplating getting one for awhile. I've had one for 3 months now and it's an absolute ripper. The torque is amazing. I can bang 1st, 2nd and then 3rd all in one wheelie without even touching the clutch. Hands down the funnest bike I've ever owned in my life. I destroy 600's and can even manage to hang with liter bikes up until about 120 before they dust me.

Hey Yam! I’m looking at a second bike for next season and considering the XSR 900 and Triumph Street Triple of comprable years and mileages. What do you feel are the differences in terms of ride quality and feel? I ride a Ninja 300 and love to shred the twisties but also commute to work. I like a more aggressive riding position but not supersport ergonomics. What are your thoughts on the two bikes?
@frankbaumann83924 жыл бұрын
The Triumph has the sportier riding position. On the XSR you sit more on the bike with quite a lot of leg room. The top end power band on the Street Triple, especially the RS, is also more pronounced than on the Yamaha which is very linear in power delivery. The R and RS versions of the Street Triple come with better quality suspension. The XSR is sporty and doing fine on good roads, but doesn't cope that well when riding hard on bad roads. I chose the XSR because of the more comfortable riding position and torquier engine, but you might enjoy the Street Triple more because of its sportier ergonomics.

From most other people I've spoken to the 900 is only a beast if u lack throttle control. Yammie seems to share the same opinion as Cycleworld. That the 900 is way too powerful for it's own good. Think that's why Yamaha decided to put 3 different riding modes on the bike, which a few reviewers seem to overlook. Dont have one yet but seriously leaning towards the 900 over the 700 and Ducati Scrambler & Monster.
@zeejunkie874 жыл бұрын
I don't think 650's or 700's are "beginner bikes" as Yammie tends to say a lot. A true beginner IMO would be a 300cc and lower bikes. Just saying

You can really tell the difference. The 900 was just asking for more, begging in fact. But the 700 was sort of relaxing, going along with no purring of a CP3. The 900 would definitely be for riders intermediate to top-level intermediate. I’m gonna pull the trigger on either the XSR900 or the FZ900 😈

Can you elaborate, Manic, pointy, rowdy, and crazy are not good descriptions for someone who hasn’t ridden the bike. What makes it manic? What makes it pointy? Could you do a split screen comparison - have the bikes in the same gear going the same speed and then accelerate so we can see the difference? Would that show what makes the 900 Manic? You were riding around 30 mph in the video and didn’t mention anything negative vs when you were riding the 700 and said the bike didn’t care to be going in the 20s.

Who is the XSR900 for? Folks who like to ride but don't like being in a sport bike position all day, who want something that's not anemic, and who own more than black leather vests with club patches on it. It's effectively the old UJM with modern technology, comfortable riding position, and loads of fun.
